An interesting test offer

Hmm, we've known for a while that Garmin map update policy states that a device not updated for more than 24 month will lose the ability to update maps.

I don't know that we've ever heard of someone experiencing this.

Here's a way to test it if anyone wants to buy a used 3597 with 2015 maps:

Indeed!

It will also be interesting to see what it sells for. It appears to be in reasonably good shape and comes with a Garmin GTM 60 cable and bean bag mount. I have it on my watch list.

Ditto

Ditto, me too. But watching and bidding aren't the same thing. wink Even at $50, it's too rich an experiment for me to buy.

I hope some newbie doesn't buy it expecting to be able to update the map.

Old GPS

I purchased a used 3597 off eBay about a year ago (for backup $150}. It had 2013 CN maps installed but no DEM or 3D buildings files. It registered just fine so I did an update to a 2017 and all files were loaded and I can continue to update it.

If

it has not been registered I would think it would be good for the lifetime update. After you registered it.

I always check the sellers Ebay feedback to see if he has sold GPS units in the past, if they are a lot of them I stay away from that seller he may have bought elsewhere, and not the original owner.

I found this seller has sold a 3597 in the past year which makes me wonder.

Ah, could be. I wasn't sure if Day 0 starts with registration or with first satellite fix that moves some distance.

map update

My referb 3597 came with 2013 maps I had no trouble updating to latest maps and firmware. I did register it with Garmin first.

I wonder if you would have to reregister to update after XX months.

Outdated map updates.

I would be pretty confident that Garmin resets the history on factory refurbs. But relating to this used unit, if I needed another device (which I don't) and could get this for $75 or less, I would jump on it and take my chances. My bet is that you can update the map without an issue, and if there is an issue you can probably talk nice to Garmin support and get the map subscription reinstated. Worst case ... you have to buy a lifetime subscription, but like I said, if the price is right, I would gamble on it.

.

That unit looks pretty rough. I would think that I would want to try it out with a better looking unit from the start.

Was it previously stolen?

How would you know this unit was not previously stolen?. I reported one stolen from me and Garmin has told me all they do is block future updates.

Will Sell

I see the price is up to $56 with 3 bids as of 8AM on Monday. there are 8 other used units listed right now. One is at $70 with 5 bids. The going price for used 3597's with GTM60 cable on eBay now is around $125 although this fluctuates daily. I would be surprised if this one sells for much less. Were I in the market for another unit, I would be inclined to spend the extra $75 and get a Garmin refurb.

As any eBay'er knows, all the serious bidding happens in the last 60 seconds of the auction. We'll see what happens on Saturday.

well

Sombody put that statement there for a reason - likely the case... maybe a database management thing?

Garmin Drive Smart 61 NA LMT-S

Kinda makes one...

...wonder why they are selling it. I think they would keep it as a back-up even if they were getting a new unit. I still have an old 350 that I keep for work purposes. I don't really care if it gets a little banged up. But, I guess that's just me. With that being said; I would think that it would be able to be updated with the newest maps.

I think Garmin did that to keep control if needed

Kinda like Coupon's expiration dates, have available if needed

The unit sold for $147.50, a bit higher than recent averages. I suspect it was because of the included bean bag mount. I find it interesting that used 3597's are selling for only $50 or so less than (new) refurbs.

I doubt anyone here at the factory bought it at that price so the lifetime map update question still exists.
