Nuvi 750 Touch Screen

After the last map update (and possibly system update) a few months ago my Nuvi fails to respond to the touch screen. Needless to say, that makes it useless. Has anyone had this problem and found a cure? Is there a way to re-load the system files?

Some background: When I went to retrieve the unit from my vehicle to update it, it was hanging from the cord as the suction cup had turned loose from the windshield. I don't know if it was working at this point but it was earlier in the day. I took the unit apart and made sure all of the ribbon cables and other connections were good. It will turn on and seems to read the gps signal ok but of course I cannot operate it.

Any help will be appreciated.

touch Screen

I just had my 660 touchscreen replaced by Sharcnet who is a member of this group.

Calibration?

Could it be a bad screen calibration? It'd be a quick, if unlikely test to see if this would recover your device:

If that fails, try a hard reset. What have you got to lose?

If a hardware failure, I'd go for a new device rather than look into a repair unless you really want to keep a 750, for the mp3 ability or some such thing.

I'm Not Optimistic

Hopefully CraigW's suggestions could work for you but I'm not optimistic it would solve your issue. Perhaps when the Nuvi fell it damaged the touch screen. There are two screens on the unit, the touch screen and the LCD screen. Since you already checked the ribbon cables. it appears the LCD screen is functioning properly.

I agree with CraigW, the 750 is not worth repairing since it only has 2gb memory. If you check Ebay for a reasonable working 765 that has 4gb memory if you still like the 7XX series.

CraigW: If the touchscreen

CraigW: If the touchscreen is unresponsive, how can the OP do a screen calibration or a hard reset?

I ask because I have an older unit that has a touchscreen problem also and at this point I'm just saving it for parts.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Cross your fingers

I did say that I thought this unlikely. But...if the screen calibration is way off, it may not know it's being touched.

My hope is that the calibration procedure picks up before the old calibration is enabled; i.e., that the Step 2 "anywhere" may still work. If so, I sorta think the Step 4 "Press Dot" may be near the center of the screen and may be working. I know, there's a lot of wishing and guessing, but if it were my 750, I'd give it the 1-2 minute test and see what happens:

nuvi 700 and 705 series:

1. Start with the device powered OFF and unplugged from power supply.
2. Press and hold your finger anywhere on the touch screen.
3. Next, slide the power switch to the ON position and then immediately slide it into the Lock position. (There is no need to wait for the screen to flash on or show the Garmin logo before moving the switch into the Lock position.)
4. Release the touchscreen when the "Press Dot" appears
5. Accurately touch the dots as they appear
The dots will change location
A stylus or pencil eraser may be used to accurately touch the dots
6. Touch OK when "Calibration Complete" appears
The touchscreen is now calibrated. Repeat the above steps as needed.

I also give it a very small chance that the hard reset "hold the bottom right corner" may be before the old (and maybe way off) screen calibration data is enabled and could possibly revert the 750 to its factory fresh settings.

But for an honest most likely guess, I suspect a hardware issue not obvious to the eyeball in which case I'd call it a lost cause.

I'm Confused?

What confuses me is the OP stated he is able to receive the satellite signal if the touch screen doesn't work, You need to press and hold down the touch screen to view the satellite signal.
Maybe that is the only thing functioning on the touch screen.

could be

The OP could be looking at the bars on the top of the screen when it fires up instead of seeing which satellites are in view.

Good Point

Perhaps that is what he seeing and he didn't check by pressing the actual view what it is locked in on. I suspect that what is happening and the touch screen is not functioning. Only way to verify that if Bayou Talker confirms this is the case.

I also had my touchscreen replaced by them. Very happy with the services they provided.
