Alternative mount idea

Greetings Garmin folks. I wanted to share what I believe to be a successful alternative to suction cup mounts. I have a cd slot mount that I have been able to install vertically in the center dash console using the gap between the console side and the face of the console. I actually used in the CD slot of my GTI but when I leased a new one, they no longer have the CD slot in the console. On a whim I tried it in the gap on the side and it works great. It doesn't block any of the console functions and is easy to install/remove if you need to swap it to a rental or other car. It has never come out over bumpy roads, etc. It leaves no permanent marks or does any damage to the console. As long as you can find a gap approximately the length of a CD, you can probably make it work somewhere. The one I have is a Mountek ngroove. Hope this is useful info for some of you.

I love the Mountek

I've been using one in my car for a number of years. In my case I've inserted into the CD slot. These work great. Super pleased with it.

What is this thing

Never heard of a CD slot mount. Can you provide a link, so I can see what it's like.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that doesn't know what it is.

Pics?

I am always looking to refine my cell phone and GPS mounting ideas. Any pictures to give me a better idea of how it looks?

Would

Would have been a good option in my 2016 Chevy Equinox except GM, in their wisdom, no longer offer a CD player in the Nox. sad

I searched for Mountek ngroove on Amazon. It looks like a good idea. Thanks.

Brumpyb Are you using this

Brumpyb

Are you using this on a new Golf/GTI, or something else. I am not seeing in my MkVII Golf a gap where I could insert this, and not a spot that won't be in the way.

I have a 2015 Passat and it has bluetooth. I would assume the Golf 7 would have bluetooth? I have my phone connected to the car and then stick it in the center console for long drives or in the cup holder for short trips. And YES I also have a CD slot, but why would I buy something like that when it's not necessary?

Multidisk player?

Does it work for cars that have a player where the same slot is used to load multiple disks>

Questions on CD Mount

I had never heard of this mount and I am very interested in possibly using this in my Freightliner Sport Chassis, looking for a stable mount that would be easily seen from both seats. Does anyone have any experience using this with a large unit like the RV760? Wondering how stable it would be.

Those who have used this: There is no ill effects to the CD player??

Will need to do some further research on this product.... May be just the thing I have been looking for!

It blocks the CD slot

It blocks the CD slot. I never used Mine as I played music from the SD card slot or via a USB connection. If a CD was already inserted, It may still play it but I never tried.

Use in a 2016 GTI

Oldboy, There is a gap between the faceplate and the side of the center console vertical area where the radio, AC controls, etc. are located. I mounted mine vertically in this gap and it does not obstruct the use of any of the center console devices. You can mount this anywhere there is a gap in the interior trim where it will fit.

The gap is narrow and the Mountek blades just fit in the gap. You only need to turn the tension screw a little to make it secure. I find this to be much more secure than when it was in the CD slot of my 2006 GTI. It never came out, but it would "bounce" a little in the CD slot. There is not wobbling or Bounce when mounted vertically in the gap between the trim.

I hope this helps.

My experience

Silver Rhinio,

I am not aware of any damage to the CD player. The Mountek ngroove has 2 plastic blades that get inserted into the slot. There is a thumb screw that separates the blades once they are in the slot and it provides pressure against the walls of the CD slot. I suppose if you really crank the screw and extert a lot of pressure, you could damage/bend/break the slot. The only negative I experienced when it was in the CD slot was that there was a slight bounce of the unit due to the weight and the leverage of it sticking out. It never fell out of the slot and never did any damage. The wobble was slight, but was there. I now mount it vertically (because there is no CD slot in my current vehicle) in a gap in the interior trim and it works much better.

Yes, very interesting idea.

Yes, very interesting idea.

When it says in the description...

"Please note that Garmin clips and female 17mm device brackets are not included with this product."

That means it just comes with the ball attached to the device that sits inside the CD slot. Nothing else, right? (I like to be clear about things)

Never mind, found the Amazon link and video.

This is a great idea as my cd player is right in front center. Thanks!

I was asking about your setup

I have seen these before but I was interested in how you mounted it since you did not use the CD slot. Thanks.

Alternative Mount Idea

I am considering a mount that uses the CD slot. Is the Mountek one of the better ones or are there others that I should consider, too?

In my mind no better CD mount

I've had my Mountek since they first came out and it has worked flawlessly. In addition, I recently bought a Mountek to hold my nuvi 2598. I now have options for either cell phone or nuvi. Couldn't be happier.

Interesting

I really like our bean bag, but will have to think about this.

Also never use the CD player.

I like this mount

i use my CD slot for CDs bu if I could find another groove in My Acura TLX, I would get it. I use the bean bag mount now and love it but it limits my view of the back up camera.

alternatives

Proclip is the best

I had it in my van for about 10 years now. A solid holder and can be use for other mount.

Other choices

I bought an item similar to these, they all work great.

You can play an already inserted CD but you must remove this device to change CDs, then remount.

Nothing good I suspect but on the other hand I would think if your using the CD slot mount for your GPS or phone your not using the CD player for much, if your using it at all. It would be a major PITA to have to disconnect the mount every time you wanted to insert or eject a CD.

Large Garmin?

Has anyone used this (with NO ISSUES) with a Garmin 6" or 7" GPS?

I'm worried about bounce/wobble that ultimately would crack the plastic around the CD slot.

Vent Mount

The Garmin vent mount is my mount of choice. It has proven to be very useful. Neither vehicle plays CDs.

Could Happen

There aren't many negative Amazon reviews on the product:

https://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Mount-Garmin-StreetPi...

However a few complaints were made about damage using the universal version of this mount:

https://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Universal-Phones-Devi...

The CD slot mechanism appears to be the same for both versions.

Read the reviews and answered questions for the products. Perhaps that will help answer your question.

Mounting

You can mount this in any slot that is the same length as a CD is wide. Most cars have gaps between the interior trim panels that will allow you to insert the blades of this mount. I mounted mine vertically in the center dash area.

power cord interference?

Does the power cord interfere in any way? How is that being installed?

Power cord like any other mount

Makinja wrote:

Makinja, The cd mount has a ball end that accepts any garmin cradle or clip. There is no difference in how that works. The cord hangs down like any other mount. It is far enough away from where the mount blades go in that there is no interference. Hope this helps.

Different Mounts

Saw this from iTech for several different mounts.
