Using 7-Zip to download the large .jcv file

Not to belabor a point, but has anyone here used 7-Zip to download the large JCV file? I'm still struggling to download it and saw reference that I can use 7z to do it. (I'm on IE11 so I can't use the browser method.)

First of all, can I, if fact, use 7-Zip to download RAR1 and 2 then use WinRAR to put the two pieces together?

Second of all, the download included three applications, 7z, 7zFM, and 7zG. Is 7z the program to kick off the desired download?

JCV

7-Zip is NOT a download program. All it is used for is to extract compressed files back to it's original state.

If IE 11 will not let you download the file, then I suggest you install another browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera. They have no download restrictions.

As far as I know 7-zip is an extraction/compression software. It's like winzip but it's open source and free.

Consider using Firefox or Chrome browsers to download. Use 7-zip to extract, not to download.

Use Firefox or Chrome to download the files. If there are multiple RAR files, get all of them. When you have all the RAR files, launch 7-zip and open one of those files. You'll be able to extract it after opening.

Neither. Use a browser to download what you need. Then use 7-zip to open the downloaded archive.

My misunderstanding

It looks like unless I use something other than IE11 I'm out of luck. Maybe I can find someone that uses some other browser and download the jcv file to a thumb drive. Thanks for all the responses.

@phil

Please go here and download the English version of Firefox

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/local...

Download to a folder of your choice. I would suggest
C:\PortableApps\Firefox

One downloaded, navigate to the C:\PortableApps\Firefox folder

Run the file FirefoxPortable_46.0.1_English.paf.exe, select English as the language and put the output back in the same directory.

Now run FirefoxPortable as a browser. Get to poi-factory.com and find this thread

Okay, I'll try it

jgermann, I'm going to take your advice and install Firefox, but I have three questions.
1. Your last sentence implies that there would be a link following it. Should there be?
2. If I install Firefox and things go south, is it easily ininstallable?
3. If I use Firefox on my side, would my wife still have IE on her side?

@phil

Keep in mind that you are not "installing" Firefox. What you will create by executing FirefoxPortable_46.0.1_English.paf.exe will be a number of new files - one of which will be the executable Firefoxportable.exe.

Since this folder contains a "portable"version of Firefox, it will not conflict with any other browsers on your machine and does not do anything to the "registry". If you want to get rid of it, just delete the folder and it is gone.

I run an installed version of Google Chrome as my primary browser (and only use IE when I need to check out a problem someone on the "factory" is having with it).

HOWEVER, I have several "portable" browsers - Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey and Chromium. Each of these browsers will come up with a set of tabs that make sense to me. For example, the Chromium browser has tabs for various banks that I need to access. Seamonkey has a set of startup tabs that include
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4357
and
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5337
so that I can periodically check to see if there have been any updates to my several GPS units.

As I have said in the past, I love portable, freeware apps, because they often do things that you can not find any commercial software that will work. I guess in a normal day I am running several dozen that help me be more productive.

Okay, Firefox started but...

jgermann, I downloaded and started Firefox, but when I try to go to poi-factory Firefox won't let me. It gives the message

"Your connection is not secure.
The owner of www.google.com has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.

This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate."

Any advice?

Never mind

Never mind. I shut down Firefox and restarted it, and the Factory came up nicely.

Victory!

Holy crap! I successfully downloaded the D3060210A.jcv file using Firefox and WinRAR. All I gotta do now is update my trusty old Nuvi 1450. Thanks to anyone to taught me anything.

jgermann, you're the first one to cogently explain what Firefox is. Thanks for your help.
