Backing up New Nuvi

Ok I backed up the files on my Nuvi 52 to my Win 7 laptop. Now what? I mean if I need to reinstall the files back to the Nuvi how do I go about it?
Please be sure to form your answers into a step by step for this Nuvi newbe.

How ...

... did you back it up? Helps us understand what you've done and how you reinstall the files.

If you used Express that only backs up your favourites. Anyway, once we know all can be explained smile

He is asking how to reinstall the files, that he backed up. He's telling you he doesn't know how to. Your asking him to tell you how he is going to reinstall the files. Thats what i'm reading?

Did you do a complete backup? See. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0w8lNNHYg .Once your unit is in mass storage mode and hidden files are showing. It is just a matter of connecting device to computer. Going to Garmin drive and replace bad or missing file with your backup files if something has gone bad.

Maybe I wasn't clear but he's answered it anyway and charlesd45 has given him the answer he needs. He said he'd backed up his files and I was simply asking how? There are numerous ways to do that and how you then reinstall them depends on what and how you've backed them up. I just didn't want to go down one avenue when he was down another one smile

Let me clear up what I’ve

Let me clear up what I’ve done, how and why. I followed the process set forth on the tutorials. While the files were copying I thought “what do I do if I need to replace files on the unit with the backup?” That is where my question comes.

The beauty of having backups is that you have a chance to easily fix a problem caused by an accidentally deleted set of files or a corrupt file. The solution is to copy the backed up file back to the nuvi.

Since there are times you may not know which file(s) is/are the problem, the easiest thing to do is to start a new thread here with your problem identified while saying that you have a backup, then let the folks here offer advice.

You have defintely done the right thing by backing up the unit. A practice you should continue after any map update. Also just in case the computer fails. It is a good idea to keep a copy on a USB stick or something else outside the computer.

Hopefully all your map and software updates will go well and the backups will collect dust.If something does happen you will be ready.

I backup using Garmin

I backup using Garmin Express --- at least I does that well...

Backup Garmin Express

This is what Garmin shows Garmin Express does as far as a backup. https://goo.gl/coMdAa

Basics

The Express back up isn't a proper back up. As already posted you really need to back up all your files on your nuvis internal memory, and in due course the SD card if one is needed in your nuvi.

I just asked a question in another post about whether or not it's important to back up a brand new GPS with no personalized data on it.

I think you just answered it...

I just bought a used Nuvi 2597LMT and I was just curious about why I should even bother backing it up when I haven't really done anything with it yet besides updating it..

The maps are huge now compared to the old Nuvi 255 maps and I would rather not fill up my already half full hard drive unless I need to.

Should I copy everything on it or can I back up certain files only and leave the map in order to conserve space?

EDIT: I also just now noticed that Garmin Express has created a folder named C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map with over 7 GB of map updates in it.

Can I move that and use that as my map backup or should I just copy and paste every thing on the GPS instead?

Is it safe to delete that 7GB's if I create my own backup myself?

You may want to review this http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45882

I also have the Nuvi 2597 and my latest backup shows as 5.25 GB.

Backup FIRST and OFTEN

Whenever I get a new unit for some family member (myself - I am sticking with my trusty 765T with Lifetime Maps bought at discount), the first think I do is make a backup. Of course, these newer units I have to change from MTP to MS mode.

As Chief10Beers said above, I also recommend that you get a USB external drive with at least 2 TB so that you can also backup your computer - I recommend the free version of Macrium Reflect.

There are just too many things that can happen to electronic devices - operator error being the most prevalent but includes disk failure, power surges, etc.

You can start backups and then go do something else. SO, the time it takes can be limited to starting the backup and then testing at the end to ensure that the "properties" of the device and the backup match.
