Just remember that if you do NOT update within 2 years then your Lifetime updates are null and void.

what happened...

What happened to 10 pages? Now we cant even get past 3?

Are all updates cumulative?

Are all updates cumulative? I haven't updated mine in probably two years or so. Would that be a problem?

Yes, but

Yes, map updates will bring you to the latest map update and if there are other software updates, you'll get those too.

But the Garmin Terms state that a GPS not updated for two years will lose its ability to receive future updates. I haven't heard of anyone losing their updates by waiting more than two years but I strongly suggest you update to the current map now, even if the next map is is due to come out in a few weeks.

We'd like to know if you succeed. If you're beyond the 2-yr spacing, let us know for sure what happens.

True

I did see a post somewhere where someone wasn't able to update as they were past the 2 year point .... Can't remember where though and it was only the once.

I just updated a Nuvi 1300 for a friend. I know she's had it for way more than 2 years, and it took the update, no questions.

It's

It's not how long you've had the device, it's own long it's been since you last updated the maps. The Garmin Terms and Conditions for Lifetime Maps reads in part:

"A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more."

It'd be nice to see if Garmin has a grace period or if they'll strictly follow the 2-year rule. Let's hope the person's inability to update a nuvi was from one that had not been updated for 3-5 years or more.

Just contributing...

Maybe just maybe..................

Garmin is lenient for those that have owned their units with lifetime updates before this actual 24 month policy came in force.

Think about it, out of the millions of units sold over the years what's the percentage of GPS owners who are as well informed as us and actually know about this 24 month rule ?

It's true ignorance isn't an excuse but I'm confident if someone purchased nuMaps Lifetime 4 years ago as I did for my 255WT and you called customer support today for help in updating they would reactiviate it as a goodwill gesture.

As phranc has reported, perhaps the units that acquired their first satellite reception before this new policy are exempt. idea

I am not 100% sure, but I think the 2 year rule is not just for map updates. So if you do a software update, update a voice file or timezone update, I think it will credit your device as still being in a "useful life" status.

I agree. I meant the 2-yr rule to apply only to City Navigator map updates, not software or other updates.

It came out of the broom closet late last night for the first time.

It was so self conscious and shy it quickly scuried back into the broom closet and Now refused to come out.

I understand the fine folks at Garmin have been busy all day trying to coax it to come back out but so fan it's not taking the bait.

Maybe next year we'll see it again razz

Garmin Drive 61, nuvi 2597MT, too many really.

i wonder

I live in Washington where they have a machine to bore tunnels underground for traveling around Seattle they have to shut down some roads down while boring under them , I wonder how the new maps will handle one road on top of another ? on that thought we live in an earthquake zone so in their infinite wisdom they build an under ground road under an elevated highway I wouldn't let these guys design an outhouse and of course it came with cost overruns in the millions !

Check out Downtown Chicago, where W. Taylor crosses I-90.

BTW: If you are in a tunnel, there is no GPS signal. The unit will calculate your progress using the speed that it registered when you entered the tunnel.

Tunnels

Interestingly, this is another place where some of the smartphone navigation apps are superior to the standalone GPS devices. The app can use the A-gps feature (which uses cell signals to enhance the satellite positioning) in some tunnels to track your progress through the tunnel. Boyd, a member on the GPSReview forum recently reviewed the Garmin StreetPilot app for iPhone and commented on this

Boyd wrote:

Going through the Lincoln Tunnel, the car's position was correctly shown as I sped up and slowed down with traffic. The Nuvi shows your position in the tunnel, but that is just a gimmick since it cannot get a GPS fix. It just assumes that you will continue moving at the same speed you were going when entering the tunnel. The app was actually tracking me using cell signals (which are broadcast inside the tunnel).

Run Express in the background and not only will it tell you when a map update is due but it'll have downloaded the map in the background so you spend less time with your GPS connected.
