I've moved the map, JCV and SID files to my 8gb SD card.
Question: Is GE smart enough to update these files the next time a new map comes out?

I don't think so. If you want those files to be installed on the SD card you may want to consider using alandb's excellent "cloning method" as described and discussed in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34914 .
This procedure will place the map files, JCV and SID files on the SD card so you don't need to move them off of the Nuvi every time there is a map update.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.
