Success!

Thanks again, Strephon, for taking care of those of us who can benefit from going from a small, single window JCV to a much expanded one.

It has really improved my "Windmill" excursions to the big city of Denver!

I used Zipeg on my old iMac to automatically decompress and reassemble the two parts.

@ PaulieUrethane

Welcome to the site.

We usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Note that the Learn Button will give you access to two valuable reference pages -
the "Index" to all of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Glossary of Terms and Links.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

Thanks kind sir.

I've been a lurker for quite some time. I think close to 3.5 years, well ever since I bought my nuvi. Only recently joined. Dad always said 'keep your mouth shut if you've got nothing to say'.

Most problems and questions I've had with my 3590LMT, others here have already solved or resolved them for me. I've just got to find all of them... Even found a link here a few years back (I think) pointing out how to modify the Dashboard, which I've already done, cool!

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their posts and 'how toos'.

2017.10 Map Update & Large JCV file

I own a Nuvi 1490LMT into which I have installed a large micro SD card to handle map updates.

It's been a while since I last updated...2014 to be exact.

Can anyone of you tech savy guys provide me with a step by step procedure to update mapset to 2017.10, including large JCV file(s) ?

I've done updates in the past but it's been so long since I last accomplished that I'm more than a bit rusty on proper procedure...I don't want to screw things up by charging ahead going from past memory of what I did.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Map and large JCV install on 1490

The easiest way to install a map to your SD card on a 14xx device is to use Garmin Express. Have your 8 GB or larger SD card formatted as FAT 32 and ready to go, but don't put it in the nuvi just yet. Start Garmin Express, select your device, and you should be prompted to start the map update. Express will say you have insufficient storage for the full map, and give you some options. Select the option to install to SD, and follow the instructions from there.

As far as downloading and installing the large JCV file, take a look at the bottom segment of CraigW's FAQ here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45292

rame1012 wrote:

It's in .system/jcv (that's DOT system/JCV)

Two things

1. .system is by default a hidden folder in Windows. See FAQs for procedures for making changes to the Windows View Options in order to see the .system folder.

2. Your 3490 supports "split screen" junction views and therefore has the full Junction View file already installed. Replacing the installed file with the Large Full Screen file being discussed here will provide you with no more "views" than you already have. Also note that the split screen views on your device allow you to see the "view" and the road map at one time while the full screen "views" take up the whole screen so you lose the map screen while the "view" is being displayed. Also the split screen view will stay on the screen until the maneuver being displayed has been completed, while the full screen view appears for a few seconds and then disappears before you actually make the maneuver being displayed.

JVs

I agree that I wouldn't replace the default 3490 JCV file with the large JCV file.

But a small test I've done has shown that JVs displayed with the various JCV files are not always what we'd expect. If the 3590 shows JVs like my 2460 being used in Arizona, then it's possible that the large JCV file could offer more JVs. No definitive answer can be offered without further tests by someone with a 3590 who's willing to try both JCV files and run some tests.

The FAQ:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45291

I'd love to get data from others who find odd differences in displayed JVs.

All in all, as long as one saves the original JCV file provided with map updates, there's no harm in downloading and substituting the large JCV file. If undesirable (as experienced by most folks with split-screen display devices), just go back to the Garmin-provided file.

File Extraction

I extracted 1st file as you suggested..how do I know if uncompressed file contains data from both files. What I'm curious about is how extracting 1st file automatically extracts the 2nd file as well.

You use 7-zip, WinRAR, WinZip etc to split the original file into 2 files (or more). The program knows that the original file was split and patches it back into one. The extracted file size will be 846,348KB or 866,660,352 bytes.

Honestly

plunder wrote:

Honestly I don't think IE will be a problem. It seems Ginpi had some issue but since that's pretty well the only report of download issues, I suspect that it maybe an issue with his setup and not IE11. In any event if you use IE and do run into issues all that has happened is that you didn't get the file you wanted. No changes were made to your Nuvi.

If IE doesn't work for you I'd suggest you download Chrome or Firefox, install either, download the files you need using the alternative browser and then delete Chrome or Firefox if you don't want to keep it on your PC.

By the way, Edge is a new browser that comes with Windows 10. It's like a cut down, fast version of IE.

@Ginpi, I can understand your reaction, but I do not think the various posters were going back within the post and reviewing all that had been written.

Your first post was #2 in the thread and you said

Ginpi wrote:

The download went well. Since the file is big do not use IE11, use Edge or another browser.

I myself did not fully understand what you meant by this post - there simply was not enough information.

Then, jjen seemed to have the same problem and said in post #4

jjen wrote:

...

I still did not know the details of the problem. But in post #6 you replied:

Ginpi wrote:

Once again, I did not have an understanding as to what was going on, other than IE11 seemed to be involved.

Now bear in mind that several people were successfully downloading the files. This might lead other posters to believe that any problems were specific to individual's computer. However, we should have picked up some information from this post

Phil

OK - there seems to be confusion as to exactly what is happening when a problem occurs. Maybe I can shed some light on things.

First, let me say that I typically use Google Chrome (installed) with four extra "portable" browsers Opera, Sea Monkey, Firefox, and Chromium (all of which have specific "start-up" pages so I can check various things every day without having to type some 17 URLs in). I have not used IE for years.

But, I fired up IE11; opened poi-factory and logged in; went to this thread and clicked on the "Part 1" link in Strephon's original post and was taken to mega.nx; I clicked on the Download thru Browser choice and - after saying the download was over 60% complete - got this message - from MEGA, I think

Quote:

IE 11 is not fully compatible with MEGA.
To download files larger than 1GB, please install MEGAsync, Google Chrome or Opera

and a dialog box which said

Quote:

Write Error:
To download files larger than 1GB, please install MEGAsync, Google Chrome or Opera

"Error: Out of Memory"

So, Ginpi, you should not have been doubted - I agree. However, it is best, whenever you can take the time, to give as many details as possible and to what you experiences so that others can better understand your problem and avoid it.

It certainly appears that MEGA knows that it is, at least sometimes, incompatible with IE11. Still, an interesting aspect is that the Part 1 file was only 500 MB.

Faststone Capture

There were times in the past when I would run into a problem and wished that I had the ability to capture my computer screen in order to be able to tell others exactly what an error message said. Well I solved that issue by finding a portable, freeware package called "Faststone Capture". Now, whenever something happens such that I want to record what is on my computer screen, I press the "Print Screen" key to invoke "Faststone Capture" and save a jpeg file of the screen into a folder that I named "MyPrtScrns".

I have sub-divided "MyPrtScrns" into other folders which I use to record, say, confirmation screens from Amazon, banking sites where I just made a transfer from one account to another, the picture of an item I just bought on Ebay (this helps when you are sent something different from the seller's picture), and, of course, error messages.

I have "Faststone Capture" start up at boot time so it is always available to me.

If something like this interests you, you can find it at

Snipping Tool

jgermann wrote:

I use snipping tool. It comes free with most Windows. I have it on the task bar so when I want to copy a photo or capture the computer screen I just click the icon on the task bar. Click new and drag the box to what I want to copy. You have the options to save it as .png, .gif, .mht, .jpg.
I only use .jpg. It is easy and you don't have to copy your entire screen if you don't need it, just the error message.

Can the large JCV file be put somewhere else?

Since I (and others) can't load the large .JCV from the Mega site, is it possible that someone here at the Factory can load it to the site where it has been for the last couple of years? I never had a problem until this version.

...

I started with snipping tool and did the same thing you do - that is, pin it to the task bar. Maybe I never learned to use it correctly, but I got tired of the extra stokes it made me take. If all I wanted was the full screen, I had to click to open the tool, then click on New, then click Full Screen. Then, I had to click File > Save As (or click the "Disk" Icon) and it would be wanting me to put the .jpg in C:\Libraries\Pictures folder (with the option to create lower level folders)

Now, with Faststone, I hit the PrtSc key and am immediately in my C:\MyPrtScrs folder where I choose the lower level folder I want to use (and in this case it would be C:\MyPrtScrs\poi-factory folder).

If I only want the active window, I use Alt-PrtSc.

If I want a rectangle from the screen, I use Ctrl-PrtSc, click on the upper right corner of the area I want and click on the lower left corner.

The feature I like the most is this next one. If I want all of a Web Page that requires "scrolling" to see all of the contents, I use Ctrl-Alt-PrtSc and click in the top of the page's scroll bar and the entire page - which could be several total pages - is captured.

As I indicated above, in the options for Faststone Capture, I can tell the program the default folder I want to use.

Other options are freehand annotations before saving the PrtSc.

The program from the link I gave above is free. It does not require an install as it is run from the folder into which it was downloaded. It gives you the option (but does not require it) to put this program into your StartUp folder.

Once I started using it, I just loved it. Quick and easy.

What site is that? Mega is the only location I offer links through. Unless you want them hosted on Mediafire, which has lately become more and more popup infested.

The solution here is simple: don't use Internet Explorer. It hasn't aged well, and I suspect its HTML5 support is the root cause of the error.

I agree, the Mega site is incredibly fast and as long as you don't use IE there are no issues. Some of the previously used sites took hours and only allowed you to download one part a day. Several of the previous sites also had tons of popups, which my anti-virus complained to contain "malicious" content. I was really pleased when you started uploading to Mega. I wouldn't disagree, Mark, if I could download it. But I can't. I wonder what has changed between the last version and this version of the JCV file. The only reason I haven't gone to the newest version of the map is because I don't want to lose the large JCV.
Is there any other way I can download the large JCV?
