Insufficient space to update map on 2597LMT Garmin

I just receive a Garmin 2597LMT from GPSCity. When I run Garmin Express, I get a message that there is a upadate but there is not enough space to load it (at least 6 gb needed).
I have install a 8 gb card, but do not see a option to load the map to the external card...since the system file is 5+ gb, how can I update this device

Nuvi...or computer?

Does your error message refer to space needed in the nuvi or does it refer to computer space needed?

The 2597 is a 8GB nuvi and will have sufficient space for many future map updates. No nuvi will ever have 6GB of free space so I think the message you have refers to your computer.

A possible Garmin FAQ that may help:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

How much free space does your computer have? How much free space does your new nuvi have? If you go to your nuvi's myMaps page, what maps are currently shown in the device?

Computer requirements for a City Navigator North America map update:

Windows®
Windows Vista or newer
1 GB RAM
At least 1024 x 768 display
13 GB free disk space
USB port
USB data cable
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (included)
High speed Internet access

Mac®
Intel-based Mac running OS 10.7 or higher running in 64-bit
1 GB RAM
1024 x 768 display
13 GB free disk space
USB port
USB data cable
High speed Internet access

If you continue to get the error with Garmin Express and feel the message is incorrect, you could try using GarminMapUpdater instead:

What version of Garmin Express are you using?

Space issue

Assuming you mean a map update, there may be another problem since the unit supposedly has 8gig of memory, enough for all updates. Suggest call/return unit to,GPS city. Personally, I never update maps,
PReferring to buy a new unit.

delete stuff

I go into every new unit and delete all the useless voices and text for all the other languages that I will never use for starters they take up a lot of room on the unit.

the message was that it

the message was that it needed at least 6 gb to install, since the system file was 5 bg there was less than 3 left...I tried mapinstaller and it said that it was up to date (2015 ver10) is on the machine... I unstall GE and used ccleaner to clear the registar, then reinstalled GE (ver4.1.5)...seem to be building the map now...will keep you updated.

update completed ok...I now

update completed ok...I now have 2015 ver 20 loaded...thanks for all help offed.

Delete file

For few latest updates I get message about lack of space for my Nuvi 770. I'm updating with Map Updater, and every time it says, there is not enough space for update.

Solution that works is simple: first I'm deleting map file from Nuvi and then run update. Worked every time. If you are worrying about update, before deleting map file, you can copy it to computer first. If update fails you can always copy it back.

Problems can arise from way that needed space is computed. If you have less than say 500GB, updater may have not enough space for temporary files or something like that.

The latest map version is

The latest map version is actually, City Navigator North America NT 2016.20.

Overwrites onld maps?

Doesn't the new maps overwrite the old maps when GE does the updates?

Yes.

Yes.

yes

They do. But from my observation it seems, that Map Updater doesn't count space occupied by old map as free. Or it may need some minimum free space before it starts update. If you delete map from device before update it will proceed without problems with free space.

I never did successful update with GE so I can't comment on it.

@grzesja

My experience is the opposite of yours. I believe both Garmin Map Updater and Garmin Express account for the space gained by deleting the old map files when they determine if there is sufficient space for a map update.

Incidentally, the full map update including all the support files like JCV, voice recognition, traffic trends, terrain map, etc. for CN NA 2016.20 is just under 6 GB for a 3597LMTHD. I actually added them all up for a thread that was discussed over on the gpspassion forum:

Deleting Voices and Text

This stuff takes up so little space (file size is relatively small) that it doesn't really provide much benefit to delete it unless one is on the very edge of free space, in which case you would be fighting a losing battle.

SD Card

What is the preferred SD card for a NUVI40?

Card ...

There isn't really one, Garmin advise no greater than 32Gb as the card needs to be formatted FAT32, but unless you plan to add additional maps over and above the original one installed then 8Gb is ample.

The maps get bigger and bigger

I had the same problem. The map and accompanying stuff went over the memory on unit. Added 8 GB SD card and had no problem loading.

Type

Excuse the ignorance, but would it be labeled as a 'Micro' card?

Make sure you delete any

Yes - I have a micro SD in my 2595 for POI and audio books. SDHC cards up to Class 10. The recommended maximum is an 8GB card.

Make sure you delete any languages too you may not need. Although it is fun to change the language on my wife's GPS.

32Gb

As per my link, the recommended maximum is 32Gb, but 8Gb should be ample.

No issues getting GE to load maps

I have a Micro SD in my 2595, have deleted all the extra languages and voices I will never use and have had no problems with map updates loading. On my Nuvi 55 I have not had the need to add a memory card yet and no problems loading the updates.

Had an insufficient space

Had an insufficient space error on NUVI 2597LMT when using Garmin Express to update the maps (2017.10). I manually deleted the gmapprom.img file from .system directory and that allowed the update to proceed normally.
