Garmin Express tells me that a Map Update is available for my 3597, CN 2016.20!!!
Doug
Just did the update....
on two units. The first unit (2455LMT) took 40 minutes from start to finish. The second unit (2555LMT) only took 25 minutes since the major download was already done.
Updates done using GE version 4.1.8.0 on an older laptop running an Intel B960 2.2 GHz processor with 4 GB of system memory.
No chance to test much after updates but no problems noted so far. Both units also took all of our POI updates right after the map updates with no issues.
Ready for our next trip!
Have a safe trip
On our way to Arizona for the winter this weekend. Great timing Garmin.

Update Problem and Resolution
Used Garmin Express to update maps on GPS and computer.
Problem: after an hour it showed "Step 2 - Updating maps - 54 minutes to go".
It then sat there locked up for over 3 hours.
I then reluctantly closed Garmin Express (without disconnecting the GPS) and restarted Garmin Express.
Then went throught the list of update prompts and it continued.
About an hour later, everything finished. Maps installed with no further error.

Interesting discovery with Garmin Express & downloaded files
I downloaded 2016.20 on both my 255WT with Garmin Map Updater and then used Garmin Express the following day to update my 3597LMTHD.
I noticed that my C drive increased by at least 5 gigs following my three updates. I first thought it was Microsoft which had downloaded Windows 10 in the background but after searching through my computer I saw that wasn't it.
I went to look at all my programs on the computer and didn't see anything new. I used CCleaner to delete history, cookies, cache etc but still had the 5gigs + on my drive and couldn't figure out where it came from.
I then clicked on my computer, clicked on the search box, size and finally gigantic. I then saw that all the files of the map update that Garmin Express had downloaded for my 3597 were still on my C drive. Why exactly I have no idea as I never downloaded the 2016.20 on my computer nor did I check mark the box to keep the files on the computer for another GPS update.
Not sure if this has happened to others but it's the first time I've encountered the above & needless to say I deleted all the files and immediately regained my 5 + gigs

Same happened to me, mentioned it on page one. Did the same. Left the GPS attached, killed the GE program then restarted GE and ran through the update again. It completed in 10 or 15 minutes. Was installing the map updates to both a Nuvi and to the PC.

MapUpdater
Anybody had problems with updating through MapUpdater? GE doesn't work well with my 770 and I'd like to know if MapUpdater is still working with new maps.
No Problems With MapUpdater

I'm not a fan of Garmin Express and still use MapUpdater.

MapUpdater worked perfectly with 2016.20
Anybody had problems with updating through MapUpdater? GE doesn't work well with my 770 and I'd like to know if MapUpdater is still working with new maps.
I do not use Garmin Express because of all the problems/issues it has had since it was created. I use MapUpdater, and it worked perfectly with 2016.20.

Thanks for the info. I don't use Garmin Express and no problem updating.
What's the problem with garmin express?
I see that some people continue to use MapUpdater instead of Express. I've never had any problems using Express, maybe because I have a Mac.
Worked Great
Updated 4 GPS yesterday without a hitch
..
Going to update now Thanks'!
Cannot unlock maps
Updated to 2016.20 on my 2699LTYHD. Looks okay, but I am getting a "Cannot unlock maps" message. ??

@oldpal
The problem with Garmin Express is that it's always running in the background, which is why I refuse to use it. The bigger problem is that it's a buggy piece of software that has caused damage to devices in the past, where Mapupdater "just works".
Naturally, this is on Windows. Mac may be different.

Express "just works" for me as well
Garmin Express for Mac has the option to either always run in the background or not. I only run Express when I choose to run it.

It seems like I just updated. The last update took forever to arrive and now this one seems to have gotten here pretty quickly.

thanks for the info on update, it took about 45 min to complete when it finished I turned it off and rebooted just to double check and all is good and I did it with GE so mabe they got GE right this time lol I guess even a monkey can get it right if he types enough letters to create a word !
...
Is there any indication why this update installs faster than most? More compression? Better data optimization? Less data?
1300 Update no problems
I updated my 1300 to the SD card using GE and had no problems.
Took about 40 miniutes to download. All went well.
Nuvi 1450 updated
Used MapUpdater on my Nuvi 1450 and all went well. MapUpdater automatically updated before starting. The only thing I haven't tried yet is to see how many JCV's have been eliminated.

Are you saying you have a new version of GarminMapUpdater? I just checked and for the PC, it's still v3.3.4, the same as it's been since December 2014. Or do you mean that GMU updated some file on your 1450 before updating the map? I see that there was a firmware update for your nuvi on July 29:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4551
Some roads now don't show on map.
Since the update and a couple of reinstalls plus a hard reset on an RV 760 some roads just don't appear on my map display. Have zoomed in and out and that does nothing to improve the situation. Any ideas?
TIA

I'm not sure why, but every time I kick off MapUpdater, it updates itself from v3.3.3 to v3.3.4.

GMU
I'm not sure why, but every time I kick off MapUpdater, it updates itself from v3.3.3 to v3.3.4.
I suggest you uninstall your current older version, then install the 3.3.4 from scratch:
PC:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe
Mac:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg
For what it's worth

You can disable the "run in background" in the options.

It sounds as if the unlock code hasn't installed / generated properly therefore you can either re-download the map or do the following:

Good luck & please let us know if if the above solved your problem

Okay, I did what you suggested

PC:

Mac:

I downloaded MapUpdater into its own folder. It downloaded with the name "GarminMapUpdater.exe", not ".dmg" like you said. When I run it, it doesn't come up clean, it extracts v3.3.4 and then runs. Does that sound correct?

Yes, that's how 3.3.4 (the PC ".exe" version) works for me as well. I'm guessing it runs on a PC without leaving files or registry changes and for sure, it doesn't install a program that I've been able to find or that can be uninstalled through Control Panel. Since I don't own a Mac, I've never tried the .dmg version.
I imagine it also runs faster for you now than by running 3.3.3 and having to download/install the newer version each time you run it.

Have to do this soon
I have a 255w without free updates, can someone tell me what this cloning issue is? I have 2 other units with LMT.
Thanks
good to know, it's that time again

I have a 255w without free updates, can someone tell me what this cloning issue is? I have 2 other units with LMT.
Obi Wan has spoken.
Cloning won't help your 255W. You do have two options for newer maps:
1) Buy a lifetime map update subscription from Garmin for the 255W, or
2) Find an Open Source map and install a map from one of several providers to the 255W.

lost/corrupted vehicle
I used Garmin Express to update my own and my wife's 3790. Updating mine was without incident that I noticed, and download time from Garmin was faster than ever, probably enabled by a Comcast download speed upgrade since my last update.
New to me was that after Garmin Express was finished updating the 3790, it offered to "download" the map to my computer. I accepted, though I was a bit taken aback at the package deal--getting the maps meant getting MapInstall and BaseCamp also. Happily it did not in fact do a new download, but instead used files it had stashed on the PC. I recalled that with Map Updater you had to spot an option button _before_ the device map install to get the map installed to your PC, and had not previously noticed an offer in Garmin Express.
The installation on my wife's 3790 the next day went well, with the step stated as "downloading" so short it obviously was using the stashed copy.
The sole flaw I've seen this time was one I've seen once before. My wife's vehicle is a nice Space Shuttle image, and it was no longer on display, being replaced by a generic auto. Checking the settings under vehicle selection showed the shuttle was not on offer. Reconnecting the unit to my PC, I observed that there was still a file called Shuttle.srf, but it was a couple of hundred kilobytes too small for the real thing. It was in fact bit-for-bit the same as the corrupted shuttle.srf file I saved from the last time this happened, during a map install in March 2015. Happily copying over my backup copy was enough to get it back on offer in vehicle selection, and selecting it brought it back to the navigation display.
