I used Garmin Express to update my own and my wife's 3790. Updating mine was without incident that I noticed, and download time from Garmin was faster than ever, probably enabled by a Comcast download speed upgrade since my last update.

New to me was that after Garmin Express was finished updating the 3790, it offered to "download" the map to my computer. I accepted, though I was a bit taken aback at the package deal--getting the maps meant getting MapInstall and BaseCamp also. Happily it did not in fact do a new download, but instead used files it had stashed on the PC. I recalled that with Map Updater you had to spot an option button _before_ the device map install to get the map installed to your PC, and had not previously noticed an offer in Garmin Express...
The sole flaw I've seen this time was one I've seen once before. My wife's vehicle is a nice Space Shuttle image, and it was no longer on display, being replaced by a generic auto...

Wow, that's interesting news on the computer update offer. I wonder if others have seen it. I always pre-check the "device and computer" so I haven't seen this offer.

Regarding the corrupt vehicle, I've also experienced the loss of a custom vehicle (grey Subaru Forester) after an update and had to reinstall it. It is interesting that in our cases, it's been a custom vehicle loss rather than Garmin-supplied vehicle.

[Edit] And this post created page 3!

Map Options

Usually when I update maps, I also select Map Options. You can change maps, reinstall maps, and install map to computer.

That is frustrating Narvick, but I must say I am not surprised. Several years ago I read in the GPS forums (don't remember which one) that Garmin updates were 3 to 6 months behind Navteq. With the recent situation (Garmin announcing 3 instead of 4 updates per year, Navteq (Here Maps) being sold to a different company, and Garmin's contract with Navteq expiring this year with no confirmation AFAIK that a new agreement with the new company has been locked in) it is in some ways surprising that we even got a map update. This is just my opinion/suspicion that all might not be well between Garmin and the map maker. If someone knows otherwise it would be nice to hear about it.

So something interesting happened...HERE's mobile app was updated and now reflects map data that *does* include my user edits but it is the early ones only (the "first round" so to speak). This falls into your theory of 3-6 months behind. So this means there are at least 4 different versions of HERE map data:
1) The Map Creator data. This is the most recent, but has not been approved as of yet.For the record, anyone can view the data even if they are not registered by going to mapcreator.here.com
2) HERE.com's map data. This is the latest "published" (approved) data available, but includes data yet to be reviewed. (currently includes user made data)
3) HERE's mobile app. This is a few months behind, but still has more recent data than. (currently includes user made data)
4) Map data supplied to vendors like Garmin and Bing. This map data is what we use on our GPSr but it is the least current. (currently does *not* have user made data).

So with this in mind, it isn't unreasonable to think that HERE's mobile app data may be a preview of the next data sent to Garmin. But who knows?

No problemo.....

Anybody had problems with updating through MapUpdater? GE doesn't work well with my 770 and I'd like to know if MapUpdater is still working with new maps.

No problems at all on my 1490T & 2599LMT....installation was trouble free and relatively fast on both.

No problems updating my 1390T and 2495T. Took about an hour each.

This can't be right...

Is this really the actual genuine North America Map Update usually so highly anticipated? I'm really confused because there isn't 15 pages of "Is it here yet?" entries... and there's only this one thread about it. wink

Obi Wan, you don't need to say "This is not the map you're looking for" because this is the map you're looking for! shock

LoL

williston, I thought exactly the same thing!

But I tried it, the update went fast and looks great.

Sigh...

Can't believe I forgot to do this again this weekend. Getting old...

Garmin C drive Bloat

Gotta love/hate Garmin. I had the same C: drive "bloat" situation as Canuk had but with a twist.

Using GE to install the new map to my 765T, 295, and Basecamp. I have a ASUS T100 laptop/tablet running Win 10 and it has a fixed internal storage card plus a removable SD card. Once you're out of C: space on a tablet, you're in program/data sacrifice mode.

Updating the 765T and Basecamp, took an hour or so but then failed without an explanation. Tried just the 765 again but failed with no explanation. Then tried the 765 with a new 4gb card, failed. Tried the 765 with a 8gb card, failed. Looked at the PC and had 2gb of space left (had 8gb before I started the update/download).

Started to compress my C: drive to gain more space .. then went poking around to see where I could also delete files when I noticed ...

On download/install, GE puts the install files in a normally hidden folder C:ProgramData/Garmin/CoreService/Downloads/Map. In that folder I had two folders that were 6.5gb EACH. One was the 2016.2 update but the other was for my last install of 2015.4, which I had installed to my removable D: SDcard for use with BaseCamp. So I immediately moved the entire 2015.4 folder to my SDcard and gained an extra 6.5 gb on my C: drive.

The install went flawlessly on my 765, 295, and (almost, see below) BaseCamp. So, an install needs disk space for the final installed map size PLUS about 7gb for storing the 'raw' build files .. AND the raw files DO NOT get deleted !!

For some reason (BC update?) GE would not let me install 2016 to my D drive like last time, only to C:/ProgramData/Garmin/Maps. So I let it install there. However, I had a shortcut to the 2015 map folder on my previous map install in my C:/ProgramData/Garmin/Maps folder so after I let GE install the 2016 map there I moved it to my D drive and created a shortcut to it in C:/ProgramData/Garmin/Maps. Works flawlessly.

Hope all of this explains some install issues and/or otherwise helps someone out. I had more than a few unkind words for Garmin last night.

And Oh Yeah, the 765T map installed without need for it's extra SD card. #!@%!!

This 2016.20 map is the one that was made available in mid-October of this year, and is not the newer one due maybe in a month or so. If you updated a GPS map on or after October 14, you already have the latest City Navigator North America map offered at the current time and need to wait until the "2016.30 is out" thread starts before planning to update your device.

Thanks CraigW

I was wondering why Garmin

I was wondering why Garmin doesn't offer daily updates like Tom-Tom does? I had an older TomTom model and I used to update it weekly, but I didn't see much of a difference on the quality of the maps. Most of the POI's weren't fixed and I don't live in a major city to begin with.

Got the latest map

Finally updated the Nuvi 50.

There were 3 or 4 older versions I had available but just clicked on 2016.20 map.

Looked like there as another map version under the 2016.20, but I didn't scrutinize what it was. There seemed to be no numbers in the name.

Had to reload Garmin Express and then took about an hour and a half or so.

I hope Garmin fix some POIs.

Thread names

I'm beginning to think that the announcement for a map update should include the date in the new thread's Subject; e.g.:

City Navigator 2016.20 Came Out November 14, 2015

That may lessen the folks thinking a new map is out two and a half months later. confused

And how was that wrong? I can understand why it might not have been what you would have preferred, but was there not a gas station there?

Excellent idea CraigW!

Wow - Out Of Loop

I cannot believe I missed this. I just upgraded to NA 2016.20 last night. I have been so busy with work and have been sick over the holidays that I never bothered to check for an update. At 2.32GB, that is image file is one hefty map update for my 765T. Probably nothing new in my area as things have been rather quiet construction wise. There are some speed limits that need adjustment but that is about it.

Firmware Update

One odd thing I also noticed was my GTM-20 received a GCD updated to version 4.50 when I ran Garmin Updater after updating the map. Not sure what is up with that. I have always updated the firmware and when I saw the update, I noted it was about three years old. I think something went awry at Garmin, the Garmin Updater software got confused and pushed the update again to me. I have assumed the 765T is long out of support for updates. Still works fine though there is the occasional crash and reboot. Nothing I have not experienced with my other Garmin devices.
