POI Loader - Newly loaded files "Greyed Out" (MAC)

I have a Garmin Nuvi 3590 and in the past, from this site, have downloaded and installed custom POIs. Yesterday I downloaded more custom POI to my Macbook desktop. I used the most recent version of POI Loader, 2.3.0, that I can find. All my Custom POI info is in a folder on the desktop. Rather than reload/write over exisitng files I tried to select from the Custom folder only the new files....they are all greyed out. The custom files from before are not greyed out. A little reading here and there online told me that these greyed out files are normal and to just go ahead and load the entire file of new and old. Soooo, I backed up and went with that. Once done, I disconnected from my Macbook, plugged into a charger and the Nuvi booted up. I went into my Custom POIs and found only the old ones, now on the nUvi twice BUT none of the greyed out files are there. I even went back to POI Factory, downloaded one file again and it's still greyed out. What am I missing here? Thanks!

Jim

>> newly loaded files

I have had best results making certain any old POI files are deleted from the Nuvi, then emptying the trash before installing new POI files to the Nuvi. Hope that helps.

There should be...

a screen a couple of drop-downs in on POI loader, that asks if you want to overwrite or delete the files that are currently on the device. Click that you want to delete the POI's on the device and continue. This should take care of your problem.

How Many?

@TRADEWINDS How many POI files are we talking about here? It's possible you have hit the limit on the number of POI files.

Also, if a POI file already exists then POI Loader will automatically ask to overwrite. That is, if the files have the exact same name. One letter off, and the loader knows no difference.

I have seen the prompt

I have seen the prompt asking if I want to overwrite. I tried that and it still puts the originals back on but all the new greyed out POIs continue to NOT load. I guess I am a little hesitant to delete all the old ones for fear I'll then have nothing custom. A side note.......during the early process I noted some .csv and some .gpx files. Everytime I tried to open the .gpx files on my Mac I was told I had to go to App Store and get a program from there. Strange because one of my old custom POI files on the gps is a Trader Joes .gpx.

Okay, I've deleted all

Okay, I've deleted all Custom POI from my Garmin, turned it off and rebooted....they're all gone. Plugged back into Macbook, opened Loader. All the old files are still there and selectable. The newer ones downloaded from this site yesterday are all greyed out. I have a 10GB SD card in the device...I believe between the Garmin and the SD card I have a total of 7GB available capacity. I had 17 POI folders loaded and want to add 13 more. WHY does this have to be so complicated? The thought of trying to get/work with Garmin support on the phone is very depressing! In the end I guess I'll hope that I can reload the old customs but I'll also hope that someone "out there" can figure out my problem. Thanks again!

Empty the trash!!!!

While I don't have a Mac, this seems to be a fairly common issue caused by not emptying the trash in the Mac.

Connect GPS back to Mac. Using Poiloader select delete all pois. Now before you disconnect the GPS delete items in the trash bin . Now disconnect GPS and reboot. Now reinstall the Pois.

Still nothing helps. I've

Still nothing helps. I've done all the eleting customs, trash deletion, rebooting and reinstalling. Still only the original customs....not greyed out.....are installed. The customs downloaded from POI Factory a couple of days ago are still greyed out in POI Loader. I cannot select them individually like I can the ones that are not greyed out. When I select my Custom POI folder in which they all reside, POI loader only installs the one NOT greyed out. What now?

May file extension

Could you list the file names greyed out from Poi Factory? What extensios are showing on the Poi Factory files after you download them to the Mac computer? Csv,Gpx or something else? Do remember some past history about having to change the extensions after files had been downloaded to the Mac. For some reason the extension did not match what it was before being downloaded.

You may want to look over this post http://www.poi-factory.com/node/14782 and review how you are downloading the files to your Mac http://www.poi-factory.com/learn/garmin and http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

Yes, I;ll list the files

Yes, I;ll list the files below....here's what I just did....downloaded CASINOS_USA, 3 pages. Plugged GPS into Mac, started POI LOader, selected my POI NEW folder on desktop where I had save CASINOS, that new file was greyed out in LOADER but I went with that folder anyway....LOADER immediately said "no valid data found in application file......".

Here area few more of the greyed out files:

Diners, drive-ins and dives
Grand Teton
WIFI Lite US & Canada
VA Hospitals

I'm having trouble with the term "greyed out" as it relates to POI Loader. When I run POI Loader, I am asked to "Please select the folder where the data files can be found". When I press "Browse", I am presented with a "Browse for Folder" dialog which show me only FOLDERS.

Is this the case with the Mac version? If so, then where are you looking at a list of FILES - some of which are "greyed out"? In the Windows version, if I select Manual (rather than Express) Mode, POI Loader will - one by one - present the FILES in the FOLDER to me to decide whether to Ignore the file or determine what kind of Alert I want.

Not having a Mac, I need a better understanding of what is happening?

extensions

When you look at the files in your folder on the computer what extensions do they show? Anything other then csv or gpx?

May be a good idea to lay out the exact process by steps on how you doing the process.

I see that all the files are

I see that all the files are opened on my computer in NUMBERS, the Mac equivalent of Excel.

When I go to Loader and select my Custom folder, there is a BROWSE button to the right. When I select BROWSE, that CUstom folder opens and shows all the individual files. The greyed out files have no extension such as .csv. All the other files which are not greyed out have a combo of .csv and .gpx extensions. I don;t recall when I first downloaded the custom POI info from POI Factory but I also don't recall any conversion to get them into .csv. It appears that now I must do something other than just download and put into a desktop folder. Any of you Mac people that can advise?

Again, the process.....download Custom pois from Factory, put them into desktop Custom POI folder, plug in the gps, open Loader, "add new custom poi" , select my Custom folder , complete the process.

bmp as well

You should also see .bmp files with the same names as the .csv files.

In my folder everything that

In my folder everything that loaded successfully on my gps is .csv or .gpx. No .bmp, no .gpi, nothing else. The greyed out files all show .numbers

.

I am not a Mac person, but I suspect instead of doing a pure download, you opened the files with the default application for .CSV files and then saved them as the default file type for spreadheets. Try downloading the files from POI Factory again (just download, don't open), then rerun POI Loader.

I know nothing about Macs, but I did a search for "Mac .number files" and got a lot of hits:

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&e...

http://www.benchmarkemail.com/help-FAQ/answer/how-do-i-conve...

My guess is that instead of just downloading The Factory's csv and gpx files, they're being opened and saved resulting in a .number format which POI Loader can't handle. It seems to me that this issue is not a POI Loader problem but rather a Mac OS, default settings or Mac browser issue.

Maybe the above links will help the OP and other Mac users come up with a solution. Good luck.

[Edit] Looks like alandb beat me to the punch here laugh out loud

No icons?

If you don't have .bmp files with the same name as the .csv file, you miss the opportunity to have a relevant icon for your POIs.

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the input...really appreciate it! I figured it out. Downloading and moving the POI files to desktop didn't work. I finally deleted everything from the GPS. Created a new POI desktop folder and and moved all CSV and GPX files which had been on the GPS to that folder. I downloaded all the POI files from this site which had been greyed out. Then I went to my DOWNLOAD file and moved all the newly downloaded files into the desktop folder. At that point I had every Custom POI I could possibly need...

Nice going
