Security changes are important!

If you're queasy about new software, you might wait a few days for others to experience the bleeding edge...

BUT--

if you have an Apple device that can update to IOS 8, you should strongly consider upgrading (again, after a few days -- let others live on the bleeding edge) for the security changes alone. Yes, it may be slower on the 4S, but the security changes are important!

Oh, and change from a 4-digit passcode to something longer? even 6 digits is far better.

SmartLink OK with iOS 8

I use Garmin SmartLink with my 3597. iOS and SmartLink works fine on my iPhone 5. I have a few other apps that call up Internet info have issues of running but not displaying info. Updates are are coming out throughout the day. I have had 50 updates in just the last few days. So far I am pleased and have no system-wide crashes or issues.

Tomorrow I get the 6. I intend to use the thumbprint sensor to bypass the passcode.

New iCloud Drive causing problems

Many items from varied sources on the web today advising folks NOT to enable the new iCloud Drive feature during the installation process of iOS 8. It is not compatible (yet) with other Apple devices (Mac is mentioned) that aren't also running iOS 8. Causing lots of issues. Advice is to hold off for now. Google for details and news videos explaining what's going on.

Updated

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 with no problems. Don't use iCloud, so nothing to report there either way.

Needs Yosemite

iCloud Drive in iOS 8 needs Yosemite, and is not compatible with Mavericks. Yosemite is due out this Fall. Use regular iCloud until then.

IOS 8

With my 5s I've learned to be very cautious of jumping on the newest upgrades. Certainly with this one I wouldn't even consider it it for at least a month.

Apple gets the bugs out by letting the users be the guinea pigs and tell them what the problems are.

Then they get around to fixing them one by one

Even Itunes I won't upgrade for a few months.

But that's just me

4S

My wife has the 4S and has been complaining about the sluggishness of it and that is with a full install of iOS 8. I have 7.1.2 on a flash drive ready to install if the sluggishness continues to bother.
I have the 5 and it seems to do good although sometimes its a bit hesitant on some things but a reboot solves that.

I wouldn't upgrade anything older than the 5S (or 5) to iOS 8. Similarly, I wouldn't upgrade iPad 3 or older to iOS 8 either. Performance hit is guaranteed.

I don't even want to upgrade my Ipad Air iOS 7.1.2 to 8. I put a restriction on my router to prevent my iPad from auto downloading iOS 8 when charging and connected to the internet.

4s and ios 8--

As I mentioned earlier, the security enhancements/fixes in os8 are worth it to me to update my 4s. Yes, it's slower on some things. But those fixes are worth it to me.

And while I've been running the Yosemite beta, I'm not running it on my main/production system!

I'm running iOS 8 on my 4S and iPad 2, just fine.

The ability to make calls on the iPad is very cool. No need to keep the iPhone nearby anymore, any device will work.

Can't wait for Yosemite... I get the advisory that iCloud Drive is not compatible with Mavericks, and can't synch documents between iOS and Mac OS anymore. I should have waited and stuck with regular iCloud. There appears to be some very nice integration between iOS and Mac OS, looking forward to it.

Yosemite should be out by the first of November, most likely. You can still use iCloud to synch, just don't enable iCloud drive on your IOS device. iCloud Drive is not the same as iCloud.

No worries. Just go to Settings>ICloud>ICloud Drive and select OFF.

You can turn it back on when everything goes live.

just a heads up, IOS 8 makes some unwanted changes automatically. For instance you have to get into the keyboard setting to DISABLE intuitive typing!!!!!!

I like Predictive Typing

I think they turn on those features so users will see they have been added. I have found it to really help speed up typing on the phone.

To control the keyboard settings to Settings>General>Keyboard. There you can control auto capitalization, auto correction, spell check, caps lock, and the predictive features. You can also control double-tapping the space bar to type a period.

Selective Memory

A recent article on CNN claimed that Apple was no longer "innovative" and had become too much of a "follower" since Steve Jobs passed away. But I think that all of this simply reflects many people's selective memories and the fact that Apple has become a victim of it's own success.

Apple still makes a great product, but as farrissr said, there are too many other products that work as good. I am not sure about the "and in most cases better" part but now users have multiple alternatives and may be less accepting of glitches.

Remember the Blackberry!

Plans

Steve Jobs died in October, 2011, just 3 years ago. Products being announced and released now were planned back well before Steve jobs passed away. It takes years for products like these to be brought from ideas to the market, several years. Just the development of the custom tooling would take a couple years to develop and qualify. I'm thinking that what Steve Jobs had a direct hand in what has been released since his death, and perhaps for another two years or so. It takes years... and pilot manufacturing and product evaluation can take almost a year.

It is astonishing to think that people think that these things happen at a whim. To produce these kinds of products on this scale, it take massive planning and infrastructure, which takes time.

And only people involved in this type of product development can understand this.

What are you doing wrong?

iOS8.0.2 is doing just fine on my 4S and iPad2.

I will say that the first time some apps are opened with the new OS, it may take a second or two more to open the app, but after that, it's fine.

Using the iPad2 as a phone now is pretty convenient, I like that a lot.

Phone Call's

You can now make phone calls on your iPad2 - that is a very cool feature

Phone Calls on a WiFi iPad2

Go into contacts, select a phone number, tap it, and the call is made. My WiFi iPad2 uses my iPhone 4S to make the calls. I can make and receive calls on the iPad2 now via the 4S. Never have to handle the 4S.

It is very nice.

Well, the cell carrier would charge extra for a hotspot capability. This is now free, part of the iOS, and will also allow phone calls from a Mac running the next OS. No hotspot required, no additional hotspot charges.

downloaded 8 on my ipad mini 2 and wifi would freeze sometmes. 8.0.2 seem to fix that problem

I so much wanted to update

I so much wanted to update on the first day of release, but decided to wait until the dust settles. Now that 8.0.2 is here, I may wait for one more update. Now I need to decide which should I update - my iPhone 5 or iPad Mini Retina first? Looking forward to the new features.

The changes are very subtle. Should definitely go through a summary to find out what they are, or you could miss them.

8.0.2

Frankly I am appalled at the lack of quality in iOS 8. Unlike Android that has to run on a huge number of platforms, iOS only runs on Apple hardware and the total number of different devices capable of running it is not that huge. You would think with the billions of dollars they earn every month they would spend a bit more on QC and testing. I have a nagging feeling that iOS 8 will not start to improve until around version 8.1, whenever that comes out.

Personally I think Apple is going to have to revamp its release strategy. iOS has become extremely complicated and once a year major upgrades are going to become ever more disruptive. I shudder at the thought of what iOS 9 might be like. It may make sense for Apple to move to quarterly updates where a small group of features are added/changed and there is time to vet them out before yet another group of changes comes along. It is either that or we will get to the point that iOS updates are so disruptive that people will start shunning them.

I don't think any of the processes that Apple goes through are as well thought out as when Steve Jobs was alive. I am a die hard Apple lover and the updates that used to come were well thought out and did not have near the issues as they do now. It seems Apple now has as many updates as Windows does.

Apps aren't apple's fault

The apps not working on iOS 8 aren't really Apple's fault. That's the app vendor who doesn't invest enough in R&D to develop cutting edge technology quickly and efficiently. Compared with a PC, one could not expect all of their prior applications on an older computer to run great on Windows 8.1.

True to a Point

ptownoddy wrote:

That is true to a point but credit does have to go to Microsoft for maintaining backward compatibility for applications all these years. Yes device drivers tend to break from major release to major release but I can still run some old Windows 95 apps on Windows 8.1 without problems. They do not have all the latest and greatest features but due to support of older API's they still run.

Apple has a habit of actually changing a specific API's behavior such that an app will break if it is run under the new operating system. Rather than saying you can keep using SomeFunction() but new apps should use SomeFunction2(), they change the behavior of SomeFunction() so it breaks everything currently using it. I just ran into this situation developing some Windows code. I had to work on an old module that calls the TCP/IP function gethostent(). That is a deprecated function BUT it still works as it always has. I replaced it with getaddrinfo() which newer programs should use as a replacement. Microsoft didn't go and break gethostent() such that everything had to be rewritten.

Still, perhaps as I stated above it is time for Apple to go to quarterly updates like Garmin does for its maps. In three months, 8.1 comes out. Six months 8.2 comes out, nine months 8.3 comes out and then 9.0.
