I have tried to set wich Garmin icons to bee displayed on the map on my Nuvi 2797th I do not want everyone when I approach a town. it pop up to many banks, petrol stations and other I do not want to see. How can I set this?

Välkommen to POI Factory kalleiviken

You must uncheck the setting for places along the road /
up ahead places.

You can read the following on how to access the map layers

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={69477cf0-cabc-11e0-cf56-000000000000}

and it's also mentioned in your owners manual on page 6 http://static.garmin.com/pumac/nuvi_27x7_OM_EN.pdf

Cheers smile

Hopefully

Hopefully unchecking the Map Layers works differently on the 2797 than it does on my 3597 because there is no "in-between" using this solution. If you have the "up ahead" layer on then you see all the built in POI icons, your Custom POI icons, etc. but if you turn the "up ahead" layer off you turn off the display of ALL of those icons. There is no way to set what you want or don't want to see.

At least on the 3597, it is all or nothing and I would not be surprised if other models work the same. I discovered this when I wanted to see the Custom POI icons that I had associated bmp files for on the map. Enabling them turned on everything and sometimes it becomes so distracting I can't spot the ones I want out of the multitude. Hopefully someone knows how to selectively disable some but not all of the icons and will share it here if it is even possible.

I have been informed that it is possible to make settings for displaying icons in BaseCamp and then transfer the settings to your device. Anyone who knows ???

Like you, my 3597 has a "all or nothing" option on the icons. I really wish there was a way to remove some of them.

.

As far as I know, the only nuvi models that allowed granularity as far as displaying POIs on the screen was the 8x0/8x5 series & possibly the nuvi 5000. The 8x5 was one of the best nuvi models available as far as user-configuration went.

Loved my 855 but got really tired of the spontaneous reboots.

Garmin POIs

Is it possible to kill some pf Garmins POI in the software? If it is possible, where can I find these POIs? I cant se them. Do I sound desperate?

On most nuvis, it's all or nothing. Favorites and map-embedded POIs exist on the same "layer" which you can only turn on or off. There is no granularity on most of the nuvi models except (as I've mentioned before) the nuvi 8x0/8x5 and possibly the nuvi 5000.

Yes - you do

You do sound desperate, so let me ask you why you are.

Exactly what are you wanting to do?

I am inferring that you want to see only certain Icons on the map display. If that is correct, then another question is, what action would you take if you did see only certain Icons.

I ask these questions to determine if using TourGuide would be an alternative. Consider this example: when my daughter - who has 5 year old twins - goes on vacation, I create several TourGuide POI files for her. One is of twenty-four hour pharmacies that are within, say, 10 mile of the location at which she will be spending the week. Another is for "Quick Care/Emergency" facilities.

When she is driving around during the week, she will get an audio message whenever she is within, say, 1 mile of such pharmacies/facilities. What happens is that she gets acquainted with where certain things are just in case she needs them.

Some of us use TourGuide to let us know when we are near a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Others use it for finding Starbucks.

@kalleiviken, it does not appear that what you currently want to do - and that is to selectively display certain POI Icons - is possible. BUT - perhaps there are other alternatives if we know in more detail what your are trying to accomplish.

By the way Welcome to poi-factory.

@kalleiviken

Welcome to the site.

We usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Note that the Learn Button will give you access to two valuable reference pages -
the "Index" to all of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Glossary of Terms and Links.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

What a shame. Does Garmin know about this glitch. Can they change it
when they upgrade the software.

Glitch?

Unfortunately, I suspect Garmin considers this a design feature and not a glitch. That said, you could send it to Garmin as an idea or requested feature. http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

Garmin icons shown on the map

Do you think that Garmin is being paid for these icon to show up by the manufacture. It is like a paid advertisement.

It could very well be, but I've never seen (or at least noticed) any definite consistencies in what POIs are actually being displayed on the screen...

That's exactly what I want to do. decide which icons appear on the map while I'm driving.
I am an experienced GPS users have had TomTom for 15 years.
To download the POI files are nothing new for me, I have now downloaded the following files for Sweden:
Speed cameras with voice warning, my voice was recorded and converted to .wav
Motorhome Overnight places with photos.
Service locations for motorhomes, toilet emptying, water filling.
wild camping
Bird protection areas
Low bridges with voice warning
campsites
petroleum stations of a particular brand
Weight control points for motorhomes

I get angry when it is not possible to turn off all resuranger, banks, all petrol stations, and so on. I'm used to from TomTom to choose which icons appear on the screen. What I want to see is the service places for camper, overnight places for campers, camping sites, vilcamping sites.
Sorry if my English is not good enough for you. If you dont understand what I'm looking for.

We understand what you are

We understand what you are looking for. Unfortunately, with the built in POIs in the mapping software on the Garmin, there is no option to turn some off. It's either all or none.
