Remove/delete Smartlink from a 2797

When I first got my 2797 somehow I thought that I needed Smartlink to use the Bluetooth on the GPS. At least that is the interpretation I got from the info the 2797 spewed forth.

Well I have an iPhone but strictly on a Pay-as-you-go plan, no data plan. Therefore I do not need Smartlink nor neither can I use it.

Any ideas how to remove it from my 2797?
Certain files to delete using Windows Explorer?

Suggestions please.

iPhone?

I'm not sure that anything needs to be deleted from the nuvi. What I imagine you need to do is uninstall the SmartPhone Link app from the iPhone.

I agree

I agree, Smartphone Link would need to be deleted from the phone. AFAIK Smartphone Link on the Nuvi is just an app and the programming for that app would be in the Nuvi's firmware. There would be nothing to delete from the Nuvi. If you didn't want to use Smartphone Link then you just wouldn't use it.

I think you may have got the roles reversed about Smartphone Link and Bluetooth. Smartphone Link needs Bluetooth on the Nuvi but Bluetooth doesn't need Smartphone Link to work on the device.

Smartphone Link

Never used it, but my understanding is that certain Garmin devices have the ability to connect via bluetooth with smartphones running the "Smartphone Link" app which

Quote:

It creates a seamless navigation experience between your compatible Garmin navigator and your smartphone, enabling them to communicate and share data via Bluetooth. Benefits of this application include:

Ability to sync up your favorite locations from your Garmin navigator to your phone
Ability to store your parking spot on your phone allowing you to walk from your vehicle's location to your destination and back again
Internet connection to Garmin Live Services using your existing mobile data plan

If you are not using this app, then I would delete the app from your iphone. I do not think there is anything that has been "added" to your device that can be deleted.

Pretty sure

Pretty sure the Nuvi asked me to install Smartlink when I tried to connect to it via Bluetooth to be able to use the Nuvi for handsfree..

There are a number of icons in the Nuvi pertaining to it and all require a smartphone connection.

I'll delete the app from the iPhone and see what happens.

Thx

There

There is absolutely no need to use Smartphone link on the Nuvi to use Bluetooth for handsfree calling, but I guess you've figured that out now.

In order to use the Nuvi's Smartphone Link app you would need to have your phone paired to the Nuvi via Bluetooth and you'd have to have the Smartphone Link app on your phone.

Therefore as I orginally said:

"I think you may have got the roles reversed about Smartphone Link and Bluetooth. Smartphone Link needs Bluetooth on the Nuvi but Bluetooth doesn't need Smartphone Link to work on the device."

smartlink 2798

I have a 2798LMT which is very similar and the app uses very little data. The files are small, so it's not like it will be a data hog. In any event, simply deleting it from your phone is all you need to do. You could remove the Bluetooth connection on the Nuvi if you like to prevent it from attempting to connect but that's not required.

I use the Nuvi with my iPhone and Smart Link and absolutely love it. I highly recommend it as it provides much greater coverage than an FM traffic receiver built into the cable. It also provides weather alerts and advisories - flooding, hail, ice, etc. It can also provide nearby parking with availability in the city. Very useful tool for travel but then again not everybody needs the bells and whistles.

I have a 2597

and can use the bluetooth with no issues and I don't have the Smart link app.

You don't need to remove anything from Nuvi. Just uninstall Smartlink app from your phone and then reboot your Nuvi. Then in Nuvi change the traffic provider info to auto, I think. It will pick up FM/HD signal in your area. Smartlink app is no good if you don't have data plan on your phone. Smartlink app uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energey) connection to transfer data from your cell phone to Nuvi e.g traffic, weather, gas prices etc. etc.
