Nuvi 660/Map update

I have two Nuvi 660's. When attempting to update the FIRST 660 from CN North America NT 2015.30 to CN North America NT 2015.40 I got a message that there was not enough room on the Nuvi for the update.

I then tried the update on the SECOND 660. Bingo….. 2.5 hours done, not problem.

Now here's the twist. I know for a fact that the FIRST 660 (the one that would not accept the map update) I tried to update has LESS data on it then the SECOND 660, the one that took the update without a hitch.

The SECOND 660 has extras such as traffic, Safety Camera and a POI data base for vertical clearance. This unit also has some music files.

I even did a little housecleaning on the FIRST Nuvi, trashing the MINIMUMl amount of unnecessary data that I could find.

The FIRST Nuvi is about 6 months older than the second. Any chance the later (SECOND) Nuvi was made with more storage space than the than the FIRST?

I tried the update via Garmin Express and Garmin Web Updater. I also tried rebooting my Mac and the Nuvi. (desperation smile) I made multiple attempts at making the update. No Luck.

I am "at sea" on this one.

What say you?

BTW: I know these 660's are dated, however I am very happy with them. I am prepared to live with the outdated map for now is necessary.

Thanks,

My 660 has been only able to

My 660 has been only able to do USA proper (Instead of NA) for about 2 or even more years now. And only via an external SD card. I have long since run out of memory/space on main drive to do even USA proper, even with help and extra voices & vehicles removed. I believe there is a file size limit (due to addressing) of 2Gb.

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Same here

Only lower 48 will fit. Been that way for quite awhile now. Will have to try cloning, but it's only a back-up unit now and I'm not going to need the extra maps.

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

split maps

Easiest way to work with it will be load what will fit on GPS (as metricman said it should hold lower 48 states) and load rest on SD card. To do so you have to install maps on computer and than use Mapinstall to load maps. 48 states should be possible to load directly from Express into Nuvi, but 660 doesn't support auto splitting into SD card, if I remember correctly. So some manual input will be needed.

680

My 680, similar to the 660, doesn't like to update via GE. MapUpdater works much better. Down to the Lower 48 only, without the SD card.

Workaround

Read the following thread concerning splitting the maps onto the units internal memory & an SD card as a solution.

nuvi 660 map update issues.

The link to the thread given by canuk is a good reference for the cause and solution to this problem. To summarize, there are two issues with the old 6xx series nuvi's ... 1) It is a 2 GB unit so there is insufficient space in internal storage to hold the map. 2) The 6xx nuvi cannot handle a file that is greater than 2 GB in size, even if you have a large SD card. The current NA map is greater than 2 GB.

The solution is to install the full map to your computer using either Garmin Express or Map Updater. Then use MapInstall to install a reduced map region to internal storage and the remaining regions to SD card, making sure each file is < 2 GB.

And make sure the map on the 660 is named gmapprom.img.
The remainder of the map going on SD card must be named gmapsupp.img and placed in a created folder named Garmin.
