Replacement for Nuvi 3790T? Does Garmin have any new flagship products coming.

My faithful Nuvi 3790T finally but the dust after 5 trouble-free years (touchscreen went belly-up).

I'm looking to replace it but I'm not liking the 2015 models they have so far. I don't like the cheap plastic construction and the non-powered mounts. I think the 3790 spoiled me.

Noticed the closest thing seems to be the 3597LMTHD. Their site lists this as a 2013 model, but it's under the 2014 models too, so who knows? Amazon says it's discontinued. But best buy has them in stock locally for $329.

I really like the looks of this model, but would hate to purchase something that is 2 year old tech, possibly being discontinued, especially if they have some new stuff in the works.

Thoughts? I need a replacement by May at the latest. I want to stick with Garmin but I'm not afraid to spend $300-$400. Don't want anything bigger than a 5 inch display. Thanks!

Welcome to The Factory

Check through the Garmin forum and you will find many who feel the 3597LMTHD is the best nuvi model Garmin ever made. I am one of them and would buy one over a newer "Advanced" model for many reasons.

If you do intend to consider the 3597, buy soon unless you're willing to shop eBay in the used market.

Thank you for this great

that I agree with CraigW 100%. And I am also a 3597 owner. If I had to replace my 3597 I wouldn't even consider one of the newer "advanced" models. IMO, go for the 3597 ... you can thank us later. smile

Consider A Refurbished

Welcome to the site.

As many have stated the 3597LMT is an outstanding unit.
I wouldn't be concerned if it's discontinued, in time they all will be. Newer is not always better.

You may want to consider buying a Garmin Factory Refurbished unit at a huge savings over Best Buy (329.00) new price. These "GARMIN FACTORY REFURBISHED" units come with the same 1 year warranty and look no different than a brand new one. The only difference being is they come in a plain white box.
I would not hesitate to buy one if I were you.

You can get a Factory Refurbished one with free shipping for 229.95 at the GPS Store at the link below.
GPS Store is an authorized Garmin Dealer.

Great insight!

Thank you everyone for your great insight and taking the time to write it. Sounds like this is the unit for me. That's some good info on the refurbs too - definitely something to consider.

Glad I found this site - I'll let you know what I end up doing!

You will not be disappointed with a refurb unit, personally whenever a model is available in Refurb, I would buy it for the cost savings over a new one. Who cares what the color of the box is as long as it's contents is the same as a new one at considerable savings.
Many members on this site have bought refurbs and are very happy with their purchase.

You just must make sure the ad states it's Garmin Factory Refurbished and comes with the 1 year warranty.

Best Nuvi 3597?

Another 3597 very satisfied user! Both my wife and I liked paper maps, you could see what was around you as you drove mile after mile down the interstates. With a "cheap" GPS you just got a road from point A to B. At first sight I did not like the 3D view on the 3597, what the hell is that blue line? but on our first trip to the mountains we were very impressed with the view of the road winding it's way up and around the gaps in the hills. I had to do some shopping in Best Buy and took the time to look at the latest units. I could not find one that had the DEM file installed! Have Garmin dropped this feature?

And no tax!

Just occurred to me that if I order from thegpsstore that will also save me another $30 in sales tax....that option is looking more appealing all the time! Thanks guys/gals!

In the meantime you should download the manual for it familiarize yourself with the Nuvi. No longer does Garmin include manuals with their products. The manuals don't include a lot of information and can be answered on sites such as this.

3597LMTHD

I have two 255WT that function flawlessly and very content with the features & reliability they offer me. With all this talk / praise / hype about the 3597LMTHD in this thread and others, I'm seriously considering in buying one now grin

I certainly don't need a third GPS but listening to all of you and knowing that they'll soon be discontinued for good is something to think about.

I'll be in Florida next month and will decide then but seeing other members here that have 5 + units, I'm starting to say to myself that three isn't that bad after all mrgreen

My "active" units are a 255WT, 885T and a 3597. There is no comparison between the functionality of the 3597 and the 255. It sits in a case, updated with the current release of maps and waits for one of the others to die so it can become the backup unit.

The features available with the 3597 and Smartphone link will have you wondering why you delayed so long. My advice is get the 3597 now and use it for your trip to Florida. You'll probably leave the 255 in a rest area someplace thinking someone may find it of use - or try to sell it on flea-bay.

Just one more point ... The magnetic mount for the 3597 makes it trivial to remove it if you leave your car in an "unsafe" place. Yes, get some case to carry it around it and beware of the magnet, it destroys hotel key cards! (and other magnetic strips)

Don't say that to loud as many states EXPECT you to pay sales tax on purchases you make online.

Some states, if they catch you, first charge you for the original tax then assess a fine for not paying the tax on your own. I know of one state that can and under some conditions arrest you and charge you with a fellony!

Oh.. N' I have a 3597 also.. If you decide to change its wakeup phrase from hello Garmin ( as I found the door chime, the radio, the seat belt dinger and many other things activated it) I'm sure there are a multitude of folks here that can give good wakeup phrases.

Me, I use "Listen Carnak" if you don't know who Carnak is, Google it and watch one of the u-tube videos... Oh, n' my 3597 rarely wakes up unless I address it now!

Good luck finding a good wakeup phrase!

Mine

BarneyBadass wrote:

I use "Hey Karen" which probably IDs my chosen navigational voice. I do find that the radio occasionally says something that makes Karen think I want her attention. The oddest is the NOAA buzz that precedes a weather alert. I suppose I could add something to the wakeup but I like the simple two-word choice I have.

of course..

I was under the impression the model was discontinued, but that's strange, Amazon appears to be the only one stating the 3597LMTHD is "Discontinued By Manufacturer".

Looking at the Garmin site, it does not say discontinued and I see new ones are available for purchase at Best Buy, and the factoryoutlet store.com.
These vendors make no mention of being discontinued either.

Don't buy a Garmin neoprene

Don't buy a Garmin neoprene sleeve. I bought one with my 3597 and have regretted it forever. The 3597 is too thin and slick and will fall out of the sleeve sometimes. It has happened to me and I'm lucky I haven't broken it. I have been telling myself I should get a new case or take some thread to manually make the sleeve shorter so it is snug.

I am leaning to the 3597.

I am leaning to the 3597. One question I haveis, do gar mins have different chips that make one respond faster then another. The reason I ask is that I have a 2555 (I think). Bad memory. But it seems to tell me to exit when I am right on top of my exit or turn. It was like that before I had to put in a SD card. But now she is horable. I need a faster card. Also it has a 4 gig storage. What does the 3597 have ? Thanks

can be caused by many things. Clearing the trip log, cutting down on announcements (alerts) and other things that take processor cycles help. Also, making certain the unit has an unobstructed view also helps. If your unit is down low on a console or shielded by metal it may not receive position information without a lot of interference.

Try doing a master reset on the unit as this will also help clear a lot of "junk" the unit ma have been dealing with. Oh, you are certain you have the latest software updates installed aren't you?

It has a better closure, has a little thicker material than neoprene for better impact protection and it is still fairly slim for carrying. It has great reviews and the price is right, at just $11.39.

Can't wait for a real trip!

My refurb 3597 arrived a couple days ago. While normally my GPS lives in my center console around town, I've been using it everywhere I go just to try it out. WOW! Love this thing! And everything works SO much faster than my 3790, from booting, to recalculating, you name it. Voice command, awesome! It 'just works' (I never used it on the 3790 because it didn't work very well). The build quality/fit & finish is fantastic (I'm a sucker for build quality). Love the magnetic mount - and it's speaker is even better than the mount for the 3790 (which was quite good).

And to anyone on the new vs refurb fence. GO REFURB. These guys/gals here know what they are talking about. I am VERY picky and besides the white box this unit is indistinguishable from a new one. Not a scratch, still has the plastics you have to pull off everything, etc. 2015.10 maps were installed, so not that far behind on updates.

I ended up ordering this case as it most resembled the case I had for my 3790: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7DUAU4/ref=od_aui_detai...

I just needed something to keep the GPS from getting banged up in my center console. I'll report back on how it fits the 3597.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE. VERY SATISFIED.

Thanks For Informing

Ordered the refurbished 3597 from the gps store. Can't wait to get it in. Have the 2555 and it has raised my blood pressure every time I go to Dallas area. She seems to be 1 step behind on when to turn. Ready for a better gps. Hope it comes in before Saturday, wife is headed to Tulsa on her own and is not that good with directions

3597

You might like the "Real Directions" feature on the 3597 firedog37. This feature gives more explicit prompts like "turn right at the stoplight" or "turn left at the end of the street". In some locations it will even say something like "Turn right at McDonalds". Also, I have not noticed a lag on receiving navigation prompts like you have with your 2555.

I'm still happy with the 3490 'cause I do like to take it around (pocket size) in its leather case but I often wonder if I should change it over to a 3597. I don't really care about the larger screen or the animated exits but I do like the fact that things like Four Square can be used with iOS vs. Android only on my 3490. Just didn't feel the upgrade was worth it from the 3490 but still toying with the idea.
