According to Garmin I believe your 2797 has a powered mount.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/mounts/s...

Try putting the 2797 in the powered mount then connect the USB cable to the mount and then to your PC. Don't use a USB hub, use one wired directly to the motherboard. If it now charges you may be having problems with your USB port on the Nuvi.
By using this method you are bypassing that port.
Somestimes those ports develop loose soldered connections from the USB port to the main board.

yes that was one of the many ways i tried , with the mount. right now it seems to be charging from the garmins usb port ( not the mount) into my computer. the mount has mini port the gps has micro usb. tried both. like i say right now the micro is slow charging from computer...thanks

Sounds like the 3597 problem

Did you recently do a Firmware update?

Read the thread at:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/43416

My 3597 didn't show the same problem until well after the Firmware update.

Look in the "Change History" at the Garmin site for your version firmware.

"Improved detection of power sources that cannot charge the device properly." was listed for 4.50 for 3597, etc.

The charging problem is probably related to the cable you are using to the unit. The firmware change appears to be looking for a source that can provide at least one amp of current or the cable is such that it provides power only and not data connectivity. That's why, in my experience, some cables work where others don't.

The USB port on your computer puts out about 1/2 amp of current, and that may not be enough to both charge and operate the unit. Non-powered USB hubs divide the current from the computer among the devices connected which is why it is recommended you don't attempt to connect your unit through a hub. Personally I have a powered hub and I connect my units to an "always on" power port and have no problems but then my AC adapter powering the hub puts out 3.5 amps.

Skinny USB cables can be a problem as the size of the conductors inside the jacket limit the amount of current that flows. It is suggested you use a cable that is thicker as it would have larger conductors that can carry more current. For an idea of the size (thickness) of the cable, look at the one that came in the box with your unit.

You can buy little "wall wart" chargers for less than $10. These little cube shaped units usually put out about 1 amp and that meets the requirements of being able to both charge and operate the unit. I believe someone posted the typical unit is now in the 750 milliamp (3/4 amp) range when charging/operating.

Wall Charger

Since you are able to charge the unit using the PC to your micro USB port on the Nuvi indicates there is no problem with the USB connection on the Nuvi to the main board.

You said the firmware upgrade did not correct the problem so you can always try a hard reset to see if that helps. Don't forget to backup your favorites first and redo your settings tweaks once completed.
However, I don't think that will solve your charging issue.

I assume you're saying your charging issues stem from trying to charge using the power cradle connected to the PC. , yet it does charge using the Garmin cable that connects to the PC via the micro USB port on the Nuvi.

As Box Car indicated, it probably has to do with the USB cable itself being too thin to carry sufficient amperage. This would require you to use a mini USB connector to the cradle and a standard USB connector to your PC. If that cables too thin you won't get the proper voltage. Try using a better cable or get a wall charger as Box Car suggested.

I have a Garmin OEM wall charger that is 5 volts and 1 amp output, I've have never experienced any issues using it. You can find wall chargers on Ebay quite reasonable but not all of them work even though the seller says they will work on Nuvi's. Some of them put you in PC mode so they're useless when trying to use it in user mode. Make SURE whatever wall charger you buy has a minimum of 1 amp or greater and is 5 volts.
My 2460 like your 2795 also has a micro USB connector on the Nuvi, in order to use the OEM Garmin wall charger that has a mini USB connector I must attach it to the power cradle for it to charge.

Garmin 2797 LMT

Ok not using a usb hub at all. tried different cables even the one garmin supplied. using wall charger rated max 1000ma. also tried surge protector with usb charging using Belkin bsv801-06-wm 2.1A charging. The long cheap cables were working untill recently so i tried several. I have tried both ports on the garmin also tried the mount with a mini usb cable.Didn't seem to matter which port i used mini or micro.Later i will try several cables connecting to the computer and holler back...thanks folks

Ok it was the chargers i was trying to use not the cable. I was using a wall charger and tried a surge protector also. Neither worked even with garmin cable. Tried the usb charger i added to my truck awhile back and works with most any cable i used mini or micro usb. Thanks for all the tips that is why i love POI Factory
