nuvi 2699LMTHD Discussion

I'm upgrading from a 750 and have questions about some of the changes and differences.

I expected to have spoken street names but apparently that has been replaced with "Real Directions". I'm not buying Garmins explanation - what am I missing?

I haven't found the ability to create, edit and save routes like the 750 ie Route x with waypoints a, b, c. Did Garmin drop this capability?

What are the alternatives to downloading the 5GB map update? Without T1 type capability that is huge and not something I would want to do with cell service.

Basecamp says I have the wrong maps for trip planner. What's necessary to get trip planner to work?

Thanks

I'll tackle a couple of items

1.) I expect that with Real Directions, you have the newest TTS3 voices. See:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42708

Note that the unit's TTS voices do give spoken street names (in addition to Turn Right at the Stoplight or Turn Left at the Stop Sign) as long as you choose a TTS voice, one that's listed as "Speaks Street Names." If you use myGarmin or Garmin Express to add extra English language voices, you should have seven English language voices that speak street names:

Large file size, higher-quality TTS3
Serena, 2.10, 9/29/14
Samantha, 2.10, 9/29/14
Daniel, 2.10, 9/29/14
Jack, 2.10, 9/29/14
Lee, 2.10, 9/29/14
Karen,2.10, 9/29/14
Sangeeta, 2.10, 9/29/14

and four voices that do NOT speak street names:

The devices that use TTS3 voices also offer the non-text-to-speech voices Michelle, Matilda, James and Kate.

What voice are you using now that doesn't offer street names? Along the lines of the answer #2, below, note that adding all the extra English language voices will take some download time. I think my 3597's extra voices totaled about 900MB. I don't remember for sure but the device may have come from the factory with only 1-2 English language voices that speak street names.

2) Map downloading: I agree that using a cell's data plan is not ideal by a long shot, but saying a T1 line is the only alternative is something none of likely use. I'm assuming you don't have a DSL or cable internet access at home. If your computer has wifi, how about downloading the map at a library, Starbucks, McDonald's or some such place? A map update may just require a 30-minute download with a good connection although you may want to budget a longer time to be safe. The junction view and some other files that come with new maps will make the download MB and minutes somewhat larger than is the case with your old 750, but not by that much assuming you update the 750 with all of North America.

3) Tell us a little more about the problem with BaseCamp and your current map. What is your current map on the 2699; i.e., what's checked on your nuvi's myMaps page? Something is odd here as this hasn't been discussed by others. If you started a map update and interrupted it, there is the chance that you've lost City Navigator and only have the device's Basemap. In this case, you may see your problem along with being unable to use the nuvi's Search, WhereTo or Routing functions.

If you just received the 2699, I expect there is quite a difference compared to an ancient 750, so go one step at a time to avoid being overwhelmed. Keep posting to this thread and you may find the answers faster than by going solo.

Have you downloaded the Owners Manual yet?

Currently the unit is set to Michelle and Samantha is also available so I’ll try it for the street names.

Apparently my DSL/811g is slower than you’re suggesting. I’ll do some testing and investigation on the speeds. Are the basic North American updates usually in the 5GB range?

The installed maps on the 2699 are 2015.30 Foursquare and 2015.30 ALL, both checked and should have been installed (I thought) to both BaseCamp and the 2699. But apparently I only have the global maps on BaseCamp. Will I have to download the maps again for BaseCamp?

Lots of improvements in the 2699 vs the 750 and I have the Owners Manual.

Thanks

Yes, Samantha should guide you with street names right now. Michelle won't.

The City Navigator map file alone is over 2GB, so with revised JVs, etc., etc., the actual download will be larger. Not having a 2014 model, I don't know the size of the FourSquare map. My 30-minute download estimate was based upon an internet service of 20MB since so many cable providers offer at least that speed. You'd need to do a speed test of your DSL but it can be slower. Also, if lots of folks are downloading from Garmin's servers simultaneously, Garmin may slow the download you see. Although my recent updates (download through installation) have taken less than an hour, I do budget for a longer update process to be safe.

Regarding BaseCamp, it should see your 2699's City Navigator map when the nuvi is connected to the computer. For City Navigator to be seen and used by Basecamp without a nuvi attached, you need to go to the Install Options of Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater and specifically tell the installer to install the map update to the GPS and computer. The default update is to install to the GPS only. If your 750 has lifetime updates and you plan to update it as well, you could install the map to the computer for use with Basecamp during the 750 update. In any event, installing a map update to a GPS and computer does increase the size of the download compared to the default GPS-only update and lengthens the download time. If you've updated your 750's maps with all of North America with recent map updates, how long did its download take?

on a laptop?

If you have a laptop (or one available) try going to a site with free wireless access. Try the local library, Starbucks or McDonalds. I would suggest McDonalds any time other than lunch but outlets can be difficult to find in some stores.

Making Progress

Street names are now working with new voices. Is there a way to eliminate all the unwanted voices to save space or just leave it alone?

Downloaded City Navigator so routing is working. Is there a way to get the total trip mileage other than adding up the segments? I really don't want the routing to choose the stopping points, just give me the total mileage and segment mileage when I add stopping points.

I've noticed that the recalculation is rather slow on the 2699 as compared to the 750 which I didn't expect. It also has a very slight pause with some names using Karen...

I downloaded a POI file and

I downloaded a POI file and was hopefull I'd see the locations on the map but they weren't there. Is there some configuration to make that happen?

They are available in the Custom POIs.

To get icons for a POI file, you need to select an appropriate Icon (.bmp file) and download it. Then follow the instructions in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4359

Note that Icons show up only when you are zoomed into 300 feet or less.

I've got the Icons - Thanks
