Nuvi 660 and MapSource

I am just getting into my new Nuvi 660 and have some questions about integration with MapSource. I would like to map out a complete route in MapSource including multiple checkpoints and stop overs and transfer them to my 660. I will have to buy MapSource and don't know if it is worth the money, and which MapSource to to buy. Anyone have any experience with doing that. We do a lot of auto touring around the US and that would save a lot of time being able to put each day.

Can't do that

Hi smokey,
Unfortunately you can not use Mapsource to send routes over to the Nuvi 660. You can send over your waypoint list though.

Do a search on this site for "Mapsource". Many members have been able to obtain it from Garmin at no charge.
Also, although you can't transfer routes to your GPSr, you can save all of the waypoints. Then, when using your GPSr on the route, set it to go to your final destination. In between, you can set one stopover, so choose the nearest wapoint that you downloaded. Once you pass that, you can insert another stopover, until you get to your final destination.

Mapsource CD and Nuvi 660

You can call Garmin customer service and for a price of around 20 USD if you are registered owner of the Nuvi 660, they will send you the City Navigator DVD Disc. It is discussed extensively at the gpspassion.com site in the nuvi 660 owners thread.(Garmin formerly did it for free.)They will tell you it comes pre-installed in the unit, tell them you need to make waypoint files.)Install the disc and run the update section and then make your waypoints, it should recognize your nuvi 660 and you can upload waypoints you have made on your pc. This in no way updates your maps to the latest version (V9)which is being shipped with the newest units.

Remains to be seen when and for what price Garmin will update the maps in the unit if you have recently purchased the unit. Some are saying it will be 75.00. sometime in the next couple of months.

All mapping software will be out of date the day you buy it. The unit has not taken me to open space yet and I use it extensively. But if your a "I gotta have the latest greatest whatever sort of person, this will frustrate you and you'll pay whatever for the latest greatest upgrade.

Because of the ease of use, it is easy to program wherever you are going in a short time. With the poi's on this site, youll undoubtedly take a few sidetrips that you hadn't planned on your pc. The nuvi 660 will always quickly get you back to where yo are going.
