Anyone

Anyone wanting to keep an older version of Garmin Express may have a problem with this update. 2018.30 update REQUIRES you install GE version 5.7.1.0 before the download will begin. There seems to be some critical change in this latest version OF GE that the map update requires.

Can't even install the latest version of GE. evil
Map update won't work either.

Need To Update to 5.7.1.0

I had V 5.7.0.0 on my laptop and a message appeared I have to upgrade to 5.7.1.0, I was unable to clear the message.
I then tried to upgrade using Mapupdater and only showed my 2018.20 map was available, no 2018.30 was available yet.
Perhaps those using MapUpdater will need to wait until it's loaded on their server.

Time showing on my download as 1hr 18min to GPS only at my 100MB connection speed after upgrading to 5.7.1.0 in Garmin Express.

I think I found a workaround. I am downloading now on my Vista laptop using 5.5.0.0. This is the last version that will run on Vista. I will wait until the update completes to make sure my workaround is viable, then will post how I was able to avoid the Express update.

Thanks for the info.

I will admit that since my nuvi 855 is a backup to a backup GPS, I've stopped manually replacing the tiny JCV file with the Large one. In fact, this map update only offered my 855 the Lower 49 states.

If the 855 was my primary go-to GPS, I'd be using the clone technique and a SD card to get all of North America and would also add the Large JCV file (when available).

Success!

I think I found a workaround. I am downloading now on my Vista laptop using 5.5.0.0. This is the last version that will run on Vista. I will wait until the update completes to make sure my workaround is viable, then will post how I was able to avoid the Express update.

My workaround for using an old version of Garmin Express was successful. It was based on my hunch that the Express software update check is the first thing done when Garmin Express launches.

So here is what I did:

1) Disconnect your Internet connection (ethernet cable, WiFi or both)
2) Launch the old version of Express. You will get a red error message banner saying that you have no Internet connection. Close this error banner.
3) Wait a couple of minutes to give Express time to try and fail to find a software update.
4) Reconnect your Internet connection, plug in your device. You should now get the map update notification for your device. Proceed with and complete the map update as normal.

I tested this on Windows Vista with Garmin Express 5.5.0.0. It would be interesting to see if it would work on Windows XP with the last working version of Express for that OS (which I think was Express v 3.2.29.0). These old versions of Garmin Express can be found on the Perry archive site. To install the older version, download the installer from the Perry archive, uninstall any existing version of Express. Then disconnect your internet and run the installer for the version you want. When the old version of Express launches, you will get the error message saying you have no internet connection. Close this error and wait a couple of minutes. Go into the settings panel and turn off all the automatic update and update schedule options. Now reconnect your Internet. It will now let you add your devices and (hopefully) update maps.

I'm asking this question because the solution seems possible. Is it possible that someone, e.g. alandb, had both the large JCV file and an FTP program on his laptop and someone else, e.g. me, had an FTP program on his laptop, that the large JCV file could be FTP'd from the former laptop to the latter laptop?

It does make you wonder ...

If the old Garmin MapUpdater can still successfully install a map update, why is an update to Garmin Express "critical" to installing the map update? Obviously it isn't.

It also makes you wonder why Garmin doesn't check the OS version when updating GE. I understand not supporting the old OS's, but why force update Express to a version that won't run? Just leave the old version in place on these old Windows machines and let the users take their chances with the unsupported version.

Oh well, now that I have a workaround, I guess my best hope is that the Garmin tech's don't read about my solution and "fix" it! confused rolleyes
