Garmin Viago App, lifetime maps and Traffic Live on Sale for 1/2 price through July 13th

I purchased the app for $0.99 and the complete NA lifetime map download that includes Canada and Mexico for $9.99 for a total cost of $10.98.

I got everything I wanted including photo real junction view and panorama terrain view that both were no cost options with the map download option.

It works very fast and smooth on my Samsung Note 8.0 and in fact the search functions for POI, addresses, etc. are way quicker than my Garmin 3790LMT. The only thing I found missing at this point is the ability to add custom POI's. They did an upgrade today to fix the contacts problem and Garmin monitors the Google Play Viago page for user problems and suggestions.

After using it for a few days I find it far better than the other map apps I have been using including Google Maps, MapQuest NavFree and MapFactor. The ability to have the entire map area and POI's available without a WiFi connection is a major upgrade from most of the others.

The map download, traffic live and the app are on sale for 1/2 price through July 13th.

This answer from Garmin was posted in another thread by member charlesd45 who had contacted Garmin about a couple of things including maps:

"This is the answer I received from Garmin on installing custom pois and map updates.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Adding customer POIs are currently not a Garmin supported feature.

All mapping comes with lifetime updates, including the streaming mapping. We are releasing at least one update per year, if not the 4 yearly updates available to our PND devices.

Glad to know about the Lifetime maps.

Just wondering out loud. The Lifetime maps are mostly locked to the phone. People do change phone nowadays more frequently than dedicated GPS units.

That is true, the maps are locked to the phone or tablet

Pillowcase wrote:

That is true, the maps are locked to the phone or tablet the same as they are on a Garmin GPS. The good thing is that they are pretty inexpensive to add to another device later on. I paid less than 10 bucks now on special but the full price at 20 bucks is still reasonable.

I have to say that so far I have been very impressed with the app and the screen is very clear, detailed and easy to see. What surprised me instead of just taking me to the location in front of the shopping area it actually guided me on the interior service drives and through the parking lot to the entrance to the store.

This is a link to a screen grab of the route through the parking lot to the store:

This is better in a parking lot than my Nuvi 2450.

So NOW I am reading what my unit says about my Maps to Go.
It helps if you read smile

"Your app will also always be up-to-date with Maps to Go and its regular map updates, as well as giving you more useful additional functions to choose from."

Does look like Lifetime Maps. Also, I wonder what the "useful additional functions to choose from" is??

Garmin víago is compatible with Garmin HUD

I didn't mention this earlier but the new app is compatible with Garmin HUD. I have a HUD in my Vette that displays the factory Nav info on the windshield and it is very handy when in severe freeway traffic like you find in LA or Phoenix to have the nav info displayed in the windshield.

Quote from their blog:

"Garmin víago is compatible with Garmin HUD, an innovative new way of viewing navigation information in the car. HUD projects crisp and bright directions onto a transparent film on the windshield or an attached reflector lens. By providing comprehensive road guidance at a glance and right within the driver’s line of sight, HUD can help increase safety and reduce driver distraction. Garmin also offers a variety of mounts to safely secure the smartphone in the car while navigating."

Has anyone got multiple

Has anyone got multiple Android devices and uses the same gmail/google account? I have this and my paid apps appear on both my phone and tablet on a single purchase. Sometimes I have the phone with me, but on longer trips I am taking the tablet more frequently and using it for my GPS.

Just wondering it the APP follows the Android standards of one purchase per account required versus multiple purchases on the same account.

Anyone?

Update -- I see some are saying the map is locked to the device, which sucks and will keep me from purchasing for each member of the family. All of us use a min of two Android devices and being limited to locking is not anything I am interested in. Yes locked to an account, one use at a time, but one device and gone? Nope...PASS

Great News

I have Garmin Viago with Maps to Go and Sound & Buildings purchased and installed on my Nexus 7.
I also have a smartphone. I though it was worth the $.99 to see if I have to buy it again for my phone.

I went to Play.google as always and it said Installed and said it was comparable with all my devices.

I clicked install and it opened my smartphone link and I said install and it installed the Garmin Viago to my smart phone as all the apps I buy have done.

There was no extra cost to put it on my second unit.
They are both registered with Google to me.

So I opened Garmin Viago on my smartphone and went to Downloads and there was everything that I paid for.

I am in the process of downloading the Maps to go now. No extra charge.

Very good news...

POIs on Garmin Viago

I will work on it more tomorrow but...
I hooked my Nexus 7 up to my computer, opened POI Loader. It recognized my Nexus 7 as Internal storage and I loaded my POIs.
Can see some of them on my map as blue dots and when I select them they are my food places, I have food selected to show in the menu, as I put FW and Port A in front of my food places to know what town they are in.

Will work on it more tomorrow to see just what I did to get them in.
I have tried a lot and am not sure just what worked.
They do NOT show up in any of my menus on the Viago. I am thinking if I name them the same as the menu maybe they will show there.
Will follow up when I know more.

Maybe someone else can try POI Loader

Mobile Alert Live - Report and receive alerts for speed cameras. Requires Maps to Go and not permitted or available in all countries.
Safety Kit - Receive school zone warnings, speed warnings, alternate route suggestions and active land guidance. Requires Maps to Go.
Sound and Buildings - Spoken street names (text to speech) and 3D buildings views while you are navigating.
Garmin Real Directions - Receive naturally spoken directions like "turn left after the bridge." Requires Maps to Go and only available for Europe, North America, and Australia.
Panorama 3D View - View 3D landscapes like mountains and valleys. Requires Maps to Go and WiFi connection suggested while downloading.
Urban Guidance - Available for iOS only. Integrate public transportation like bus, train, or ferry into pedestrian navigation. Receive step by step instructions for using public transit. Information and availability can be found at: http://static.garmincdn.com/shared/emea/custom/viago/UrbanGu...

Found out a couple of new features in Viago today

Found out a couple of new features that I was not aware of today.

First I can change the vehicle that is displayed and the ones that have the transparent backgrounds in them are transparent and work the same as on my 3790LMT.

Second that when navigating today I found that when my note 8 tablet is in portrait mode the Junction view displays as a full screen photo real JCV but when in landscape orientation I get the split screen with the map on the left and the photo real junction view on the right the same as my 3790LMT. grin

--
Garmin Drive Smart 55 - Samsung Note 10 Smartphone with Google Maps & HERE Apps

Good news.

The split screen JV is good news. In my initial test of Viago last weekend, I used portrait mode and was disappointed with the full screen view. Landscape mode is not very convenient for the Note 8 with my car dashboard layout, but I will do some experimenting to see if there is a way of mounting it that will work.

I actually find that the app works great and is very fast at rerouting and searching for destinations with no Wi-Fi connection needed.

A couple of features that would be nice to add like custom POI capability and the ability to change vehicles in a menu would be nice additions. Those items would be nice if they add them but by no means are a deal breaker.

I'm very glad that I grabbed the app and the lifetime maps while they were on special for 1/2 price and so far the app works better than any other navigation app that I have tried prior to Viago.

I'm very glad that I grabbed the app and the lifetime maps while they were on special for 1/2 price...

I am quite happy with Viago.

Found a couple of undocumented niceties:

1. It has active lane guidance, same as Nuvi 3597. I found it quite useful. You do not need to have the junction-views to have the active lane guidance.

2. You can enter the address in a single line with local search. This is similar to what you can do in the 2012 and newer models such as 2595, 3597 and in Google search. I found this more convenient than having to enter street #, street, city, etc in separate line with the regular address search.

In an previous post, I indicated that the Traffic Live is quite accurate. You do need to have data plan and be receiving cell signal for it to work. I found it uses very small amount of data, probably <~MB for a one-hour drive that I tested. Don't hold me to the exact amount though.

I am not sure about the area where the traffic is available either. Tested only in the SF Bay area.

me too happy with Viago
