Use A Garmin Sync Cable To Charge

Why?

Why do you see the need for a data blocker while charging?

Use A Garmin Sync Cable To Charge

Some Garmin sync cables put the GPS in the sync mode and cannot be used to run the GPS from it.

To avoid Juice Jacking

Has anybody here tried one of these, yet, with their Garmin data cable?

Yes. Have occasionally used one (PortaPow Data Blocker+Smart Charge) with a Garmin Nuvi 2598 to charge the battery. Normally use the PortaPow Data Blocker+Smart Charge adapters while traveling on planes with USB power ports to charge my mobile devices. No issues.

To avoid "juice jacking" when using a USB cable to charge from a public USB port charging stations/ports. (ETA: Or like the previous poster indicated, to charge and use the Garmin Nuvi without it going into "sync" mode when plugged into a PC or similar device.)

Such adapters are just another travel tool to have on hand in addition to carrying power packs while traveling with multiple mobile devices.

Are there any real

Are there any real statistics on Juice Jacking? Because I don't see anything to warrant this as a big security issue. It seems like it's mainly being used to make you think you need to buy something to make sure the sky is not falling......

"... Since then, Apple, Google and other mobile device makers have changed the way their hardware and software works so that their devices no longer automatically sync data when one plugs them into a computer with a USB charging cable. Instead, users are presented with a prompt asking if they wish to trust a connected computer before any data transfer can take place. ..."

So no.. not needed... use

So no.. not needed... use common sense...
But spend the money if it makes you feel safer.

Juice jack

Haven't seen any statistics but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen somewhere on the planet. I've had the data block adapter for many years. From before the mobile device OS updates changed the way it deals with USB connections. There have been recent government warnings about Juice Jacking:
https://www.fcc.gov/juice-jacking-dangers-public-usb-chargin...

For the purposes of Garmin devices (at least the various models I have), automatically go into sync mode with no user intervention when connected to a PC using the supplied Garmin USB cable. For those who charge their Garmin by USB cable that could present a potential, even if remote, security issue. Possible solutions is not to use a data USB cable but instead use a USB charge only cable, or by a data blocker adapter, if one is going to charge their Garmin device by USB port. Shrugs.
