SET LOCATION button sometimes missing

I just got a 2797 and set another city as a location using the SET LOCATION button but now I can't seem to set a different location.

If I go into simulation mode and tap a spot on the map the blue circle appears and the name of the spot is on a bar down below. If I press that bar I get the page I usually get but no "Set Location" button. It's as if I have to somehow delete the current location from memory and get back home?

I have two screenshots showing identical screens; one with and one without the SET LOCATION but I am not sure how to upload them if indeed that is possible.

I am able to get the button back sometimes by deleting my HOME address but then if I enter a new SET LOCATION I am again unable to set a new location - most of the time deleting and redoing HOME works but not always...then suddenly later the button is available???

Turn off?

Just interested.

If you turn the device OFF (vs. "sleep") and back on, can you then set a new location?

Tried that many times and

Tried that many times and it's a no The only solution I've found is deleting MY HOME. very strange - it's as if the location set is precluding the addition of any more set locations.

Testing some more - it doesn't always happen - sometimes I can set 5 locations in a row with no problem so I'm not sure what triggers it.

Set Location

If your 2797 works like my 3597 in simulation mode, once you get the blue circle with the flag, there should be a box at the bottom of the screen showing the address (next to the Go Button). Press the address box and you get the information screen containing the "Set Location" button.

That's just it - sometimes

That's just it - sometimes there is a SET LOCATION button and other times there is not. When there is not I have only gotten it back by deleting MY HOME and (sometimes) restarting. Wish I could show you the 2 images - one with the button and the other without.

SET LOC

I've tried your method with my nuvi 3597 hoping to have the same procedure as your 2797.

As you state, in simulator mode, you can do a Whereto, select a city, then tap the map and set the location. Having done this, I then backed out, selected a different city, tapped the map, then tried to set the location to this new spot.

I found that there's a slight difference between my 3597 being in landscape mode vs. portrait mode.

In landscape mode, the Set Location appears in a large grey box on the left of the display--and can be tapped and set.

In portrait mode, after Whereto-ing a 2nd city and tapping the map, there is no visible Set Location button to tap. That's because the display can not display everything at the same time. I did see a Down Arrow, and upon tapping it, the Set Location button appears for me.

So if your 2797 works like my 3597 and if you're using it in portrait mode, either tap the down arrow--or rotate your nuvi 90 degrees to put it in landscape mode to see the button.

I'm making a lot of assumptions and would like to hear if this suggestion works for you.

If the Down Arrow brings up your Set Location button, it won't be the first time that overlooking an Up or Down Button resulted in a missing button on a nuvi... mrgreen

The 2797 has no portrait

The 2797 has no portrait mode as it is so large I guess. Before I got this model I tested a 2597 and had the same issue but never worked out my solution (except by deleting user data) as I knew I was going to exchange for this model.

Thanks for the idea though.

Set Location

It only works in simulation mode. In simulation mode, you should see "GPS is Off" in the top bar when you press the "View map" button. Note that if you put the nuvi in simulation mode, then turn it off and back on, it will no longer be in simulation mode ... you have to go to settings and turn simulation mode back on.

If that isn't what you are seeing, then I am not sure what is going on. Seems to work consistantly on my 3597

Yes, I am aware of all that.

Yes, I am aware of all that. I've been refining the problem - if I set a location and then press GO I am then unable to add another. It seems sometimes that the simulation goes on even though I've said NO and that seems to affect it. I am seeing that if I turn GPS simulator off and go to a map and then turn it on again and go to a map, it triggers something and the button is again visible.

I have to press the STOP X to make this happen - so it appears that even if I'm not hearing the voice, the simulation is somehow still turned on?

I know, it sounds garbled but I'm trying to be clear (!)

Simulation mode

Not sure if I am following you, but if you have pressed "Go" in simulation mode, you have an active route and would not be able to use Set Location again unless you stop navigation (press X to stop the active route). In simulation mode, you can't set multiple locations. The Set Location is used to simulate your "current position". You can change your current location to another place, but you can't set multiples.

I had just discovered this

I had just discovered this but it seems strange that this would go on even when completely turning Garmin off and then on again?

I had just written you a step by step that showed this - I had not realized that the X was for stop navigation - I'll keep playing and see if it happens again and if the X cures all. I can't believe how many hours I've spent on this.

Thank you so much for all your help - this has mystified me for 3 days.

Current Location.

The reason you cant Set Location when a route is active (in simulation mode) is that your current position is locked to the moving vehicle. When you stop the navigation, your current position will be wherever the vehicle was when the navigation simulation stopped. But it will no longer be locked, so you would be able to now set a new current location as long as you are still in simulation mode.

This behavior isn't unique to the 2xx7/3xx7 nuvis. My old 755T and 855 work the same way in simulation mode.

Edit: Just as an aside, it sure would be nice if this forum software supported imbedded images. I suspect we would have more easily been able to help you figure this out if we could have seen your screen shots. One thing you can do in this regard is post to something like PhotoBucket, then post the URL's to the images.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. Next time I will try that. I've been reading this forum for 3 days (since I joined)and it has been very helpful and interesting.

Current Location

I've had an occasional glitch using the feature on my 3490.

The way it works with the 2597

I find that on occasion when the set location is not available, there are arrows on the left side of the screen. Touch the down arrow and the set location option will appear.
