Old map deletion

First, backup your entire nuvi and SD card to a computer before tinkering with their internal files.

An aside: read the initial section I italicized, then the last italicized section. I will disagree that your use of GE has been with no problems given that the 2460 should have received the full North America update without having to resort to Mapsource.

Now, to get rid of those cursed islands and whatever other areas were Mapsourced-in.

You say that you used Mapsource to install Hawaii, etc. to a micro SD card. Is this correct? Is the old Hawaii,etc. the only thing on the SD card? If so, remove the SD card with the nuvi off, then reboot and they should be gone. If the old Hawaii, etc. map file is on the SD card and there are other files are on the SD card that you want to keep, then look on the SD card for the map file, probably called gmapsupp.img. Then follow my instructions below regarding gmapsupp.img.

What follows is how to find and remove a Mapsource-added map if instead of going to the SD card, it was installed to the nuvi itself.

Hook your nuvi to your computer and look for files ending in .img in the .System folder and the Map folder. Do not touch the gmapprom.img, gmapbmap.img, or gmaptz.img files. What you're probably looking for is a gmapsupp.img file, possibly with a file date corresponding to the date you adding Hawaii with Mapsource. If you have other .img files, let us know.

The safest way to test removing the 2013.20 Hawaii, etc. is to rename the gmapsupp.img to gmapsupp.img.disabled. Then safely disconnect the nuvi from the computer, fire up the nuvi and see if the 2013.20 Hawaii is gone. If so, and to gain some extra room, you could go back and either move the disabled file to your computer or simply delete it.

PS--to gain extra storage on your 2460, you could go ahead and remove unneeded voice and other files that are in languages you don't speak and never plan to learn.

The "old" map stuff was on the microSD card. I removed the card, turned on the GPS checked the map version and only the most current showed (no more cursed islands, etc) and did a few "where to" addresses from Hawaii as well as other places in the western USA and the unit found and mapped them out just fine. (Most likely when given a choice due to lack of space I installed as much of the east coast the unit would allow then the rest via mapsource).

The files on the card were mostly dated from 8-xx-2012. There were a couple from that ended in 'update' from 5-31-2014, but nothing with the file ending in the three don't touch files you list above. Without the microSD card it found the places I asked it to look for so I'm guessing whatever the newer files were weren't needed. Don't punish me too severely but I just got rid of whatever was on that card and reinserted it.

This unit is the one my wife uses so I'm not sure why it needed to revert to the sd card a few years ago, nor do I understand why all of a sudden it stopped needing the sd card. I do know when it first told me there wasn't enough room I deleted most of the extra vehicles and all languages we didn't need to try and free up space, but it wasn't enough.

Sitting here at my desk and searching for places all seems fine now, the routes compared to my computer mapping program look correct. The real test will be getting out on the road and allowing it to run but for now I seem to have corrected the problem.

ETA: I'm not really sure when I started to use GE but I don't recall any problems, at least none of the horror stories I've read here. I used to go to "My Garmin" and update via the Garmin website interface.

Out of curiosity did you ever compare how much memory is avialable on your wifes 2460 compared to your own?

I just find it strange with 8gb memory on the 2460 it should never have to add a map to an SD card on an update unless something went wrong and the older map was not removed.

You may also want to check your System\ASR folder and make sure that you ONLY have the the two voice command files are present for 2015.10. These files are updated with every map and can take up substantial space if the older ones are not removed on the update.
For the 2015.10 map on the 2460, check to see if these two files are present and have the date stamp when you updated to 2015.10.

If ther are any other .SRX or ASR files in that folder they belong to a different map version, you can backup and then delete those.

In the fuure, you can easily see how many .img files are on your Nuvi or SD card by using the search feature in Windows Explorer (if using Windows).

I like that idea. If there's a significant unexplained difference in free memory, it'd be worth searching for the cause which could easily be a single (or a few) large file(s) that should not be present.

I haven't heard of this issue with the 24xx series, but it definitely has occurred during past updates on the nuvi 3597 where a large unneeded 600+ MB file was left behind after a map update for some folks. And, as we found in this case, supplemental maps added through Mapsource are left behind even after newer map updates make them unneeded.

Both units were nearly full, less than a GB left. Windows 7 lists the size as 7.31GB

Both had a lot of "asr" & "srx" files from 2010, 2011, & 2012.

I deleted all but the two you listed. Got rid of other languages as well. I've gotten the free space down to 2.67GB on mine and 2.64GB on hers. I have a few more vehicle icons.

Sorry, no I haven't. If I want a route I use my Microsoft Streets and Trips and print a few maps as a back up. I'm fairly good on routes and once I've "seen" it a time or two I pretty much get where I'm going.

I drive a truck(s) for a living, I'd been using maps a long time before GPS's so my sense of direction is pretty good. When I drove a trash truck I had to figure the best way through an area so as to not cross the same piece of road more than I needed to, a GPS doesn't give a big enough detailed "picture" of the area for me.

One thing I do like on my 2460 is the trip log line it paints. I can use that see get a look around and see if I've made the correct choice.

You don't want to delete them ... most of tham anyway. The ASR folder contains the voice recognition files. If you have languages other than the ones you need, you can delete the files relating to those unused languages. The SID folder contains information for traffic trends, search and other features.

The Sqlite folder contains data bases for traffic trends, mytrends, ecoroute, etc. The Extdata folder contains chipset fixes, special fonts, etc. You may not need everything in these last two folders, but you don't gain much by deleting, so leave them alone.

If you do decide to experiment by deleting any of these files, make sure you have a good backup. But my advice is to leave them.

Diag folder - used by Garmin, it stores debug infos
ExtData folder - ExtData folder – stores 006-D0952-01.bin, 006-D0952-02.bin, 006-D0952-03.bin, 006-D0952-04.bin, 006-D0952-05.bin, 006-D0952-06.bin, 006-D0952-07.bin, 006-D0952-08.bin files which contains special font for not alphabet languages likes Herbew, Thai, Arabic.
ExtData folder – also stores for some device with MTK chipset files ARC.BIN, BEE.BIN, 006-D1221-00.bin. 006-D1221-00.bin – GPS Chipset Type M HotFix Data software which updates by webupdater and ARC.BIN & BEE.BIN are files what stores current info for GPS software metioned above. GPX folder - stores your trip log.
Current.gpx = file created each time you connect your Nuvi to USB. Stores all current loaded routes and waypoints in the Nuvi.
Temp.gpx = stores all routes and waypoints :created for connecton from Mapsource to Nuvi
You can open the GPX files within this folder with Mapsource ( see post n 5 for more infos)
BTM folder - stores infos about your phonebook and a .wav file your unit run when a call is coming in your phone.
EULA folder - stores infos about licences (traffic,Navteq,nuRoute)
Help folder - stores help files in different languages.
Keyboards folder - contains Keyboard languages files ( .kbd files).
Reports folder - contains the mileage.csv , a file that will give you a summary of all of your trips, cost, etc. as part of the ecoRoute feature: it contains the following fields, Date (MM-DD-YYYY),Start Time,Origin Longitude,Origin Latitude,Destination Longitude,Destination Latitude,Origin,Destination,Distance (km), Time (min), Fuel Economy (l/100km), Fuel Cost (EUR), Carbon Footprint (kg).
Scores.bin is related to Overall : a combination of the speed acceleration and braking score and to Speed : gain points for driving at your vehicle's optimal speed for conserving fuel.
RoadSideAssist folder - stores infos about RoadSideAssist services (AA) and images for 'Where Am I' function.
JCV folder - stores Junction View files on models which support such a feature.
ASR folder - "SRX+ASR"/Voice recognition files (Automatic Speech Recognition).
G2S folder - G2S&.db :NüRoute technology&trafficTrends.
SID folder - Files are stored in 34xx and newer .System/ SID and are traffic trends ,instaSearch , instaAdresses and POIs and FastRouting related.
JPEG folder - stores Nuvi's default pictures and splash screens. You can add more jpg files into this folder.
POI folder - stores custom POI and travel guide files.Preloaded Cyclops.gpi = trial version of Garmin's speedcams subscription. All these files have .GPI extensions. It is ok to delete these files if you are sure you don't want them.
RemoteSW folder - Files stored in RemoteSW folder are the microcodes for appropriate chipset installed in your nuvi. Firmware upgrade checks at start if the version is to flash < version on disk – then upgrade it. It is an upgradeable code. (GCD, BIN & SUM) The first.GCD is the original firmware. The other file is the new firmware that the unit has installed- It contains also Touch Panel Software(006B121100.GCD: This file is for Touch Panel Software in 37xx series). Firmware for GTM receiver is in RemoteSW too. Nuvi creates an info entry about it in file GarminGarminDevice.xml.
Scrn folder - stores your screen capture images. The files are in bitmap (BMP) format and could be opened with Windows Paint application. Filenames: 2343.bpm (example. The numbering seems to be random)
Text folder - stores default and custom messages and keyboard layouts. These are text files with .GTT extensions: additional language versions text files. You can edit them with a text editor.If American English is selected, no other translation file is necessary since this language is embedded in the unit firmware.
Dashboards folder -stores new DASHBOARDS designs introduced in 34xx models.
Vehicle folder - stores Garmin vehicle icons. Files are with .SRF extension. You can add and delete these files.You can download them at
userdata - technical archive, dont delete.
Voice folder - stores Garmin voice guidance files. Files are with .VPM extension. You can delete unused voice files, but do it with care.
Filenames like:Afrikaans_.vmp are normal voices that do not speak streetnames
Filenames like:Nederlands_Claire.vmp are TTS (text-to-speach) voices that do speak streetnames
Birdseye folder - stores Garmin maps made by using BirdsEye Satellite Imagery in .jnx format.
Themes folder - stores .kmtf extension files. They are just text files, so you can create your own:you could change the color of lakes, parks, shopping centers and other polygon areas.
SQLite folder - It stores .db files : Traffic trends, ecoRoute,myTrends and some user's strings. To read these files you can use a SQLite client .
SQL folder - it contains SQL/DB-file "Trail Database" for outdoor devices activities.
It displays special routes or information depending on the activity chosen by the user, differentiating between pedestrian activity cycling activity, hiking etc : Active Routing feature in new Garmin Topo maps PRO.
Logs folder - stores files concerning track logging feature.
Demo folder - can store demo.gir file .It contains some images for the demo sequence.
GPS folder - stores ARC.BIN , BEE.BIN etc files used by webupdater.It contains also rxn folder.Inside eph,poly and seed folders, probably Ephemeris prediction related.

GarminDevice.xml - stores information about your Nuvi to facilitate transfer of data to/from your unit. It is recreated each time the device starts. The firmware never reads from it but only writes to it.
Trips- This is for trip planner files.You can back up this folder. (All files in this folder will be deleted when you do an hard reset.)
FCD- FCD (Floating Car Data), constantly evaluates information about the traffic situation and sends a control center, data are automatically analyzed and sent to TMC-compatible devices.
gmapbmap.img - Garmin base map (worldwide map) cannot deselect it.
gmapbmap.sum -check-sum file, mapupdate related, can be deleted.
gmapoem.img -Additional map for specific branded units such as Honda and BMW,it doesn't show up in the map inventory, cannot deselect it.
gmapprom.img - Garmin detailed map (preloaded). Back up this file before deleting or overwriting it.

So help me out here. Am I to understand that when I go to update my Garmin with the newest Map that the old original one will still be there, taking up memory? I just got my Garmin this year and still learning about it. I've not updated anything as yet.

If the map update was successful, the old map and dependant other files will be replaced with new ones.

Sometimes things go wrong (especially with Garmin Express) and debris is left.

Beside the map.img files the SID file is the only large file (1.05 GB) in my unit and I see it includes traffic trends and other insta search functions.
I do not use traffic trend and my trend. No check marks for these features, under Settings.

You should not have to worry about touching the .system files AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A BACKUP. So, if you do not have a current backup, please take the time to make one today.

We hear from far too many members who wish they had had a backup.

While I know .jcv files are not "maps", I discovered that I have two .jcv files on my 765 and I do not know why.

My speculation is that it is a result of having my maps placed on the SD card.

The last update, I was told that the map would not fit on the 765 and did I want it to go on the SD card? I let the map go to the SD card.

Just recently, I was playing around with software (which is both free and portable) called TreeSize Free (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=treesize&m=) and looked at the nuvi. I noticed that the JCV folder was larger than I expected.

Based on what t923347 has taught us, I have both the JCV file for the 2014.30 Maps and the JCV file for the 2015.10 Maps.

I swear I do not remember independently downloading the latest large file. I have downloaded previous large JCV files.

Importantly, the D3060140A.jcv file is in C:\Program Data\Garmin\Core Update Service\MAP-NA-2015-10 folder.

I was surprised to find the small JCV file was the one on my 2595 and it had a date of May 22, 2014.

Why was the large one put on the 765 and the small one put on the 2595?

Anyway, one of the morals of this story is that one can find out a lot about your devices - AND ABOUT YOUR COMPUTER - by using TreeSize free to look around. The default display is to start with the folders that takes up the most space. Whenever I do this, I almost always find that there are files that I do not need (especially since I do a fair amount of video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and often go through several iterations of AVI files before I get to the finished product).

Now, can someone explain the fact that I have a small file on one device and the large file on the other and I did not do anything with either.

If I'm missing your point, just ignore this.

To me, everything you found makes sense except for your 765's keeping of the older D3060120A.JCV file from two map updates ago. That file should have been deleted both when the 765 was updated to 2014.40 and 2015.10.

As I remember reading (I've never owned a nuvi 7x5 series so correct me if I'm wrong), the 765 does get the large JCV installed by Garmin during map updates without the need to manually download the large JCV file and replace the default tiny JCV file that comes with some of the older models like the nuvi 855. The 765 receives the full-screen 800-ish MB file.

The 2595 also receives the correct JCV file during map updates--and being a split-screen file, it is the 500-ish MB file.

So to me, without your downloading and copying the large JCV file manually to a device, the only problem is that your update process (Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater, with or without the clone method) left the large JCV file from two map updates ago rather than deleting it during either of the two most recent updates. As you guess, I tend to agree that maybe the update got confused when trying to first install a map update to the SD card rather than the internal nuvi storage.

Until someone offers the details or a link to older discussions with the answer, this is sort of what I remember:

1) All models that receive the split-screen Junction Views are given the correct JCV file during map updates. (The one "exception" to this is the small group of split-screen device owners who prefer and are willing to manually download, install and then view the large full-screen JCV file and its views.)

2) Of the older devices that show full-screen JVs, it's the nuvi 1xxx and 8x5 (maybe 8x0 as well) devices that receive the tiny JCV file from Garmin during map updates--and these are the devices that will benefit most from manually downloading/replacing the large JCV to their device.

3) Of the older devices that show full-screen JVs, it's maybe only the 7x5 series that receives that large JCV from Garmin during map updates, and therefore they do not need to manually download or use the "large" JCV file.

The first devices to get JVs were, I think, the 7x5 and 8x5 (8x0?), and (most/all?)of the 1xxx series.

Although the 765 has the same 4GB capacity of the 855, the 855 storage had to hold voice recognition files, leaving little room for a large JCV file. Therefore, the 765 gets the large JCV while the 855 gets a special tiny JCV file during map updates even though they're both 4GB devices. Many of the 1xxx devices were 2GB devices and therefore had too little space for the large JCV file as well, and therefore got the tiny one.

The 8x0 devices did not support junction view. Junction view was introduced on the 7x5 series and included with the 8x5 series. In the 1xxx series, the only models that had Junction view were the 1390 and 14xx units. The 1350 and below did not have it.

Just for completeness in this discussion, I think the Zumo 660 also has the full screen junction views. As far as I know, it still gets the large full coverage JCV file when updating maps. Maybe someone with one of these units will confirm or debunk.
