Replace Memory & System Files

I have read posts referring to "memory" being replaced. My question comes about from a recent post 'back from the dead" where a user made comment "try to replace the memory."

Are users talking about the SD card that some units have or are they talking about the main memory that by default stores maps, POIs, system files, etc? If talking about the main memory, then if you are running out of room, why not increase the memory card with a larger one?

I did try a few searches here and on the web with no ref to these questions.

TIA

SD Card

Yes, when they are talking about updating memory, the mean updating the SD card/chip to a faster, higher capacity version. Check with Garmin or your manufacturer before you do to make sure the SD card you want to buy will work properly with your model. Also check the threads here on POI Factory as many user have been able to upgrade to SD cards that the manufacturer has not yet listed as compatible.

Fixed internal memory

The amount of memory that each unit came with is fixed. You can see the range of internal memory at
Garmin Internal Memory {G}
and help with getting more memory for maps at
Freeing up more space for maps {G}

When the maps grow to a certain size, users had to add "external" memory in the form of SD cards. Early device SD slots were full SD but most now are micro size.
see What is the largest SD (Secure Digital) card that my nuvi can accept?

SD Card

I understand the use of the micro SD card in the "optional" sense with an SD card slot. The post I referred to gave me the impression he was talking about the onboard memory. I am guessing wink that I was incorrect. wink

I currently use the SanDisk 8gb Class 4 in both my units, but right now only to store my backups.

@dferron

I understood that you knew that the internal memory of our units is fixed.

I expanded on the subject for the benefit of those who may not have thought about it.

Fixed memory

"Fixed" memory in the Nuvi probably refers to memory permanently attached to the Mainboard in the unit.

Unlike a computer or laptop, this memory is most likely permanently attached to the board using surface mount technology that would be extremely difficult for the average person to replace.

Replacing the unit would probably be a more cost effective solution. However, I am not certain since I have not disassembled my Nuvi. Just a WAG.

I did not see your posting. By the look at the time it looks like we got caught in a time oops! My comment was to DiQuest.

Please forgive if I have offended anyone.
