Slight problem since last map update

I updated my 3790 a while back to the newest Garmin map and it worked fine all the way home from Mexico. But I always set up a route. The GPS zoomed in on the roads and highways I was on just fine.

Now that I am home and in my own town almost never have the need to set up a route where ever I travel it looks like I am at about 5 miles altitude.

What settings am I missing? I have never had this before.
On a route or not the map was always zoomed in. This is somewhat annoying.

Thanks for any help.

Muchas gracias, thank you, thank you

I believe that is the answer to my problem. I have not taken the GPS for a ride, but just unchecking the DEM box seemed to do it.

It is strange since in the past I had always chosen the 3D view over route up or north up.

No good

Took the car and GPS out for a run and there is/was no change. Still looks like I am hovering in outer space.

What happens when you zoom in?

Use two fingers and zoom in, it should remember the new zoom level after doing that. Works with my 3790 and never had it change except when it zooms in during a route turn and then goes back to the previous zoom level.

I have the latest map in my 3790 and have not experienced any problems.

Check your map view...sounds like it has been reset (somehow) to 3D mode? It's unclear (at least to me) what exactly you are describing. confused

On the 37xx series: Tools/Settings/Navigation/Automobile/Map View

If it's currently set to "3-D", this is likely what you are seeing. Setting it to "Track Up" or "North Up" will restore the 2-D mode. "Track Up" will rotate the map as you drive, "North Up" will keep the map aligned to the north and your vehicle/arrow pointer will rotate instead.

EDIT: You mentioned "hovering in outer space"...can you see the entire Earth (or a very large area of it) in the map view? If so, you need to zoom in like "rjrsw" mentions above.

I'll try this

Use two fingers and zoom in.

Never ever had to do that, but will give that a try tomorrow.

No I do not see the whole earth but comparing it with MapSource it would seem as if I am 5 or so miles above the map whereas before it was more like 200 feet or so.
I could barely see 4-5 streets ahead of me.

Same Stuff

Your reports are very similar to the complaints I had/have with the way the 2597 I bought behaves with regard to zoom.

In 3D or North up, there is no zoom at all with no active route. If you manually zoom it out, it will not re-zoom if you slow down and speed back up.

In active routing, zoom only occurs in 3D. In North Up, you have to manually zoom it out, and will remember as long as the route is active and the unit not turned off.

In 3D with an active route, if you leave the map screen to the menu page, zoom will stop and not work again until the unit has been reset. (Hold power off for 10-30 seconds.)

Garmin says this is normal and is incredulous when I told them how my 2555 and 760 worked.

learns from you

As it happens I press on-screen zoom buttons rather the pretending I have an Apple touch screen, but I find that it generally gets a good idea of what I like pretty quickly--just getting off kilter when I drive an unfamiliar place and use zoom to different than usual.

Just try setting the zoom where you want it a few times and look to see whether the automatic behavior does not become much more "as you like it".

Stiil have to go out today.

All the suggestions will be tried, but that still does not explain why ONLY since the last map update to 2014.4 this is happening.

I have had the 3790 for 3 or so years now.

Follow up to my problem

As many have, I updated to 2015.1 and I can report that the zoomed out condition has disappeared now.
When I start driving it is still zoomed way out but after driving for about 500 feet or so it zoomes back in the way it used to.

Must have had something to do with the 2014.4 map.
