Running out of room on 2797

I just noticed that I've used up 72% of storage space on my 2797, what can I delete to get more room?

Freeing up more space for maps

Never fear

First, it's not as bad as it seems. The 2797 is an 8GB device so you have 1.96GB of free space. That's a lot of space given the small increase in map update file sizes 4x per year. Your device may eventually die or be replaced with something newer well before running out of internal storage.

But there are ways to make more room. First, start with a complete backup of your entire nuvi (using MS mode, not MTP). Then look to the voice files and keep those that are languages you speak. There's probably no need for you to have Tagalog or Mandarin, etc. You'll get the biggest bang for your buck with voice deleation but there's much more than can be removed.

[Later] Darn it, jgermann--I looked all over for a faq and missed it.

Will these steps

Will these steps work on the Nuvi 2459?

Since I maintain the Index, I usually have it open in a browser window.

INDEX TO FAQs and Reference Pages

I just go to the Index and do a CNTL-F and search for keywords.

Thank you

2797

Also make sure you don't have more than one map installed...like 2014.4 and 2015.1...just before updating i backup everything on my 2797 then remove the big map file from the device before getting the new update

Voice files

There are dozens of them. I backed 'em up and then deleted them from the nuvi. I have had no problems at all since the deletion.

2598 memory

We added a 32GB micro memory card (Costco $22) to our 2598. What will used this memory and does the memory card help prevent running out of memory?

a whole lot of

Adding a 32GB card to any Nuvi in the present iterations guarantees you have a whole lot of empty space. The 2598 doesn't need an external memory card (as of yet) as there is plenty of capacity for maps and updates as well as POI. There is a FAQ (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375) that covers the amount of memory found in units. Your unit comes with 8GB and when you clear off the unused and unneeded voice and text files you should have around 2GB of storage available with the latest map update.

Having the card doesn't hurt anything, it's just overkill at this time.

Having it in 32 GB size is even more overkill according to

Garmin's stated maximum size for nuvis

Garmin wrote:

Using an SD card size larger than 8GB is not supported for these devices. However, using one will not harm the device but it may or may not work. Also, Garmin supports all speed ratings (including unmarked cards).

BarryHomer did not state what speed class it is but according to the speed rating statement - it would seem that getting really fast cards would be even more overkill
