It's the 2GB limit that I'm concerned about.

Page 3 anyone?

I think I may be giving up on Mexico this time with my 660. I doubt I'll ever travel there anyways.

Whenever it comes, we all

Whenever it comes, we all know Garmin will have screwed it up in one way or another.

Garmin's have a good interface and lousy maps. I laugh every time I head to Fargo ND and try and use the Garmin to get to the Costco store. A dead end road a few miles past the store is the start according to Garmin...lol

Google

Google shows the store in the middle of a field with nothing else around. Not even Cosco.

JanJ I have a nuvi 660,

JanJ

I have a nuvi 660, and I've been using an 8GB SD card for at least 2 years, with no limitations. The 660 will definitely read a card bigger then 2GB. I know Garmin says they will only read up to a 4GB card, but they actually will read up to an 8GB card. Make sure you have all the firmware updates installed and you should be good to go. An 8GB card is over kill but it was cheap enough so that's why I decided to give it a try. It works.

take care

I'm hoping this time around they recognize that Hawaii and Alaska have become states!

Not Yet

I just checked. Like I thought is was time...maybe next week?

Hi JanJ
I have 660 as well. Out lived the internal storage along time ago. I bought an 8gb Sd card, put it into your PC, format to fat 32 and followed the direction posted below to install directly to the card. Works great, and takes about 20 minutes to download to the SD card and ready to go. No more two hour installs like the old way. You can now delete the old map off from the Garmin. Use Garmin Express to do the install to the SD card. I didn't come up with this idea, the credit goes to Alandb

1) Format the SD card FAT32.
2) Create folder \Garmin on the card.
3) Copy file garmindevice.xml from your nuvi into the \Garmin folder of the SD.
4) Disconnect your nuvi and put the SD card in your computer's card reader. Log into my.garmin.com. The SD card will be recognized as your nuvi
5) Proceed with the map update using Garmin Express as normal. When it is finished, you will have the 3 map files in the \Garmin folder of the SD card. They will be named gmapprom.img, gmapprom.unl and gmapprom.gma.
6) Rename the map files to gmapsupp.img, gmapsupp.unl and gmapsupp.gma.
7) Insert the SD card in your nuvi and boot. You should now be running with the new maps on the SD card. Look at Map Info to make sure the correct maps are enabled.

raven 1948, I believe I had answered that on Page 2 of this thread.
Your above procedure is correct and has worked for you up until now, but it’s highly probable it won’t work for the 2014.40 update if installing the FULL North America Map. Sine 2014.30 was 1.97 MB in size, the 2014.40 will most likely exceed the 2GB limit map size the 660 will recognize. As alanb stated, “So if you want the full NA, you may need to install a reduced region, then use MapInstall to install the remainder as a supplemental map file.”

This 2 GB limit also applies to anyone owning the following models:
nuvi 300 Series
nuvi 600 Series
nuvi 5000
StreetPilot c500 Series

Who cares?

With the amount of road work in my area, I do not see any update in a few years anyway.

In my opinion, the quarterly updates have very little value.

I wonder how much each map update cost Garmin. In other words, if Garmin changed to only 1, 2 or 3 updates each year - how much money would they save? The reason I ask the question (which I really do not expect anyone here to be able to answer) is - in my opinion, the quarterly updates have very little value.

Nuvi 660

Hi muell9k,

So you're saying this would be a firmware limitation of the 660 to read a map larger then 2GB.
OK, I get what your saying. Thanks for clarifying that for me. I really don't have a need for all of North America, the lower 48 will do for me.

Thanks, Raven

JanJ, if you are still using the cloning method with Garmin MapUpdater, it is identified in step 8 of the procedure:

Quote:

8. GarminMapUpdater should recognize your configured SD card in the card reader as your Garmin device. Proceed with the map update as normal. When you get to the screen with the “Install Options” button in the lower left corner, press that and select your desired option for map region. Also select either “Install to device only” or “Install to device and computer” as desired.

The Costco store in Fort Worth has no street in back. It's because they have such a large parking lot... The front is on a service road and if I route to go in the back it shows no road... Glad I know a road is there...

Size

I will be quite curious to see how large this update is. I have been on an SD card the last three updates and have plenty of space. I still find it amusing that only a few years ago, a map update was around 800MB for just the map itself.

Screw Up

Has anyone ever thought of the reason that Garmin is releasing maps 4 times a year? My conclusion is to fix the many years that have piled up with mistakes and they need us to help fix their problems in a timely manner before the whole company implodes. Slick in making us think that they are doing this for us and not for them. Think about it, a road is put in place by mistake (like we have not all seen it) and if it takes a year to fix it, then it's probably forgotten. At least this way, they get fresh ideas on which roads needs fixing every 4 months. Makes sense to me. What about you?

I'm confused

I'm seeing a lot of comments in this thread blaming Garmin for map errors. Garmin really doesn't have anything to do with map data, its supplier Navteq (now HERE Maps) does.

Money!

My thought is money. They are charging large portions of the population for updates. Many people now have lifetime maps, but buying an update for an old model is a waste.

I think you and jonwrong need to take off your tinfoil beanies. First, Garmin isn't going to implode. Second, they get the map data from Navteq/Here. Third, while it may feel like it at times, we are not Garmin's beta testers regarding the map. Finally, all current units I believe include map updates so there is no need to purchase a map update unless owning an old device that did not include one.

See the link

for the file size of the map and junction view files. It certainly is an increase.

That's the size of the download

including the juntion view, speech recognition, and other auxiliary files. The actual map file (gmapprom.img) is about 2.1 GB.

Good Question

uber360 wrote:

Thanks!

I would like to know also.

JCV

As with earlier versions, I got the full JCV file with my 755T (over 796 MB), but my 855 got a puny 24 MB file even though I used the cloning method with a SD card that had plenty of room for the full file. So as before, I copied the large JCV from my 755 to the 855 and everything works fine.

So, those of us with 8x5 and 14xx nuvis will need to get the large JCV file separately.

Alan,

thanks. I did the download last night and have just a very small JCV file now. I followed a link to the large JCV file but the link was dead. Has the large JCV file not been released yet?
