855 interesting item

I typically download my weekly tracks to MapQuest on Sunday evening. When I did so this evening, is showed no tracks, routes, waypoints or maps. Checked the drive and GPX folder was empty. WTH?

Unplugged and plugged in again and Presto, everything was there.

Go figure!

the 800 series

The 800 series was Garmin's experiment with both the Linux operating system and sleep mode. Just as when you load POI to the unit you need to do a hard or cold boot to transfer them from user accessible memory to the system's internal memory, you may also need a hard boot to transfer internal memory to user memory. I have an 885 and love the unit. The Bluetooth is not good at all, but then that's a pretty common failing with these units. The margin on building them and marketing them is so slim from Garmin's standpoint the cost of top grade components wouldn't justify an increase in end-user price.

As Box Car mentioned, the unit will only reload/refresh data on a power-cycle which is accomplished by:

a. Sliding *and holding* the power switch to the ON position for (if I recall correctly) 30 seconds.

-or-

b. Removing the battery from the device for ~10 seconds.

These two ways are the only way to power-cycle the unit. It is otherwise, always in a power-saving "sleep" mode. The only time it truly powers off is when the battery is removed. This is/was a source for many "issues" where the user would find the unit dead after only a week (or so) of non-use while in sleep mode. Yes, the unit does "sleep" but it's "sleep" state used a lot of battery power, thus causing the battery to die much sooner than other units.

It's not very clear to me what you did exactly but if you cleared the issue with the power-cycle, then this would naturally be the thing to do if you ever encounter the issue in the future.
