time zone update

For those interested. There is Time Zone update to version 13.0 through WebUpdater. Changes:

Changes from version 11.00 to version 13.00:
Updated timezone database.

Got it for my Oregon 440t.

If you're using the latest

If you're using the latest version of BaseCamp for the PC, its time zone map - if it has one - is outdated as well. Copy the map from the device to BaseCamp to update.

Time zones change?

I find it curious that Garmin needs to update the time zone data as often as it does. Aren't time zone boundaries relatively static? I realize that some political entities near a TZ boundary might change from one side to the other, and others may opt in or out of DST. But does this really change that frequently or is Garmin just correcting errors?

I'd sure like to know what the changes were. I wonder if the database is US/North America/global(?).

This

This update maybe for Garmin devices other than their "on the road" models. AFAIK, the time zone map for the Nuvi is provided via map updates and not through Webupdater, which I believe only provides "software" updates.

Hmm, we don't have a reply yet, but as others possibly respond to another thread, we may learn more about this map and whether it works with nuvi devices:

My 885 updated the TZ map so it may be model specific as well.

TZ map.

Webupdater offered the new TZ map update for my nuvi 755T. In the past, I have received TZ updates on the 755T both with map updates and Webupdater. Also, the timezone file on my Oregon 550 seems to be the same as the one on my nuvi.

Interesting. My nuvi 855 doesn't support automatic time zone, so the time zone map never loads with the map update or is offered via Webupdater. I would have thought that the 885 and 855 would be the same except for the bluetooth support and (now defunct) MSN traffic. Garmin must have given the 885 the additional function of automatic time zone. I have tried copying the gmaptz.img file from my 755T over to the 855, but it is not recognized by the 855 or listed as a file on the diagnostics menus.

No to 2460

You must be right. My 2460 is my only nuvi with automatic time settings so I checked but there is no update for it (beyond what may have been updated with the latest City Nav. map update over a month ago).

More on 13.00:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4747

There's no indication here as to which series or models can use the October 25, 2013 updated file. It also states that a Windows PC is required but I imagine Macs can get the update as well.

Not this far... Checked earlier... No update for my 765t on Mac via WebUpdater, Garmin Express, or MyGarmin web site...

Garmin says

In a fairly recent FAQ

Does my Garmin device automatically change time zones when I travel to a new time zone?

10/11/2013

Some Camper, nuvi, LIVE, zumo, RV, and dezl devices will automatically change the time zone as you drive. These devices will also display your ETA using the local time for the time zone your destination is in.

The models which have this feature are:

Camper 760
dezl series
LIVE 1695
LIVE 2300 series
nuvi 30 series
nuvi 40 series
nuvi 50 series
nuvi 205 series

nuvi 705 series
nuvi 1100
nuvi 1200 series
nuvi 1300 series
nuvi 1400 series
nuvi 1690
nuvi 2200 series
nuvi 2300 series
nuvi 2400 series
nuvi 2405 series
nuvi 2407 series
nuvi 2408 series
nuvi 2505 series

nuvi 3700 series
RV 760
zumo 220
zumo 350
zumo 390
zumo 600 series
zumo 605 series
In order for this feature to work properly, ensure that the Automatic time mode is enabled. Follow the steps below for your specific device:

nuvi 30, 40, 50, 205, 400, 705, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1690, LIVE 1695, 2300, and zumo 660, 665, and 220 series:

Touch the time that displays along the top of the screen on the main menu
Touch the tab below the Current Time option
Touch the box next to Automatic to place a check mark
If a check mark is already in the box, the device is already set to change time automatically
Touch OK to save the change
The device will now adjust the clock automatically.

nuvi 2200, 2300, 2400, 2405, 2407, 2408, 2505, 2507, 2508, 2707, 2708, 3400, 3500, 3507, 3508, 3700 series, zumo 350, zumo 390, Camper 760, RV 760, and the dezl series:

Touch the time that displays along the top of the screen on the main menu
Touch the box next to Automatic to place a check mark
If a check mark is already in the box, the device is already set to change time automatically
Touch the Back button
The device will now adjust the clock automatically.

nuvi 295W:

Touch Settings in the scrolling bar on the main menu
Touch System
Touch Date/Time
Touch the button below Time Zone Selection
Touch Automatic
The device will now adjust the clock automatically.

If after changing these settings the device still doesn't change time zones automatically, make sure to download the latest Time Zone map. This is available on the list of additional updates from the Garmin Express program: http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

The nuvi 200, 300, 700, 800, 805, and 5000 series and the zumo 400 and 500 series will not automatically adjust your time zone while navigating. These devices will continue to display the time in correspondence with the time zone that is selected in the time settings. To manually change the time zone for these devices, please follow the steps below:

From the Where To? View Map screen, touch Tools (wrench icon).
Touch Settings1
Touch Time2
Change the Time Zone option to the correct time zone.
Notes:

1The nuvi 300 and 600 series and the zumo 400 and 500 series do not require this step.

2The nuvi 300 and 600 series and the zumo 400 and 500 series do not have the Time menu. You would need to touch Locale and then touch the time to adjust your time settings.

My nuvi 250 was not listed here, the closest thing to it was the 200 series listed as not having the feature. But my 250 did indeed do an automatic time zone adjustment, including daylight Savings Time, on a cross country trip this year.

250 with auto time zone feature

That is interesting Frovingslosh. If I remember some of the forum discussion that went on back when the 2x5 series was announced, Garmin started putting some 2x5 components in some of the later 2x0 units they manufactured. They still branded them as 2x0 models, but they had some of the 2x5 features. Maybe your 250 is one of those later 2x0's that was made with 2x5 parts.

It is. Newer hardware. Faster. 2 gig of internal memory (most used by the map and system software. Maybe that is the same as the old one, I don't see how the old version could have survived with less, but somehow think I have more than the original 250s). But software-wise pretty much a 2x0 and not a 2x5. Not sure why newer hardware would lead to it having a software feature. I didn't get text-to-speech, visible speed limits or anything else that the 255 or other newer hardware has over the 250. But glad that I got time zones. And this was with a 4+ year old map and 4+ year old firmware. I updated my firmware since then (to support 4 gig OSM maps on the microSD card). I expect and hope that it will still support time zones properly, but have not had a chance to test that since the update.

nuvi 250 (version 2 hardware)

Again, if I remember the forum discussions from 4 or 5 years ago correctly, another thing you gained with the newer components on the late 2x0's was the ability to add multiple via points instead of just one like the original 2x0 had. You still couldn't save a multipoint route or recall it for later use (like the 7xx series), but you could enter a destination, then add multiple via's to create a "current" multi-point route.

The 2x0 and 2x5 units were some of the most reliable and trouble free automotive units Garmin has ever made.

I guess we are getting off topic from automatic time zone functionality, but it is kind of fun trying to recall some of the "hot" Garmin discussion topics from a few years ago.

Did a little probing. The changes of time zones and the observation of daylight savings time or similar may happen more often than we would like to think.
