so?
What's the problem? GPX files usually contain more information and with Bluetooth the stores abe dialed through the GPS. Oh, POI Loader handles GPX files as easily as CSV.

CSV preferred
I for one like CSV files better.

GPX

I usually load the GPX version when I have a choice. It contains more information

Saying you have a preference for .csv files seems to imply that you take some action with them once you download them. As mentioned above, POI Loader takes either .csv or .gpx.
It seems unlikely that the size of the files would make a difference because, on the device, the size difference is negligible.
What is it that you do with them?
I agree
epe to convert it
I convert with EPE and then it's easy to modify to my liking with Notepad and Microsoft Works spreadsheet !

Just interested

something similar, I take the Garmin CSV break it out to individual fields and convert it back to a GPX file, and a TomTom ov2 file

What modifications do you make?
first of all I sort the file by longitude (low to high) to more easily find a location
Then I change column 3 to just have the name of the "location" ie: CrackerBarrel
In column 4 (in most POI files) I delete zip code, tel # and other info I don't use - easier for me to read at a glance !
Just my personal choices all the way around !
When I had my first GPS it had very limited memory so I learned to reduce significantly the file sizes so I could have more POI files !
I just kept doing it by reducing the info I realyy didn't use - more work for me , Yep but I'm retired !
I can also use POI Verifier II on my files ! Old Dogs - old tricks

Modifications using CSV
I split up Walmart & Sams into separate files...
..My Jill says Mcdonalds Play Place Milan EYE EL. I like to delete the Play Place and change IL to Illinois.
No compelling reason, just personal preference. I don't update those files each time.

Like a lot of the power users here I modify all the files I download. Most of mine are converting CSV files to GPX but then I also modify some of the GPX files to delete what I consider useless information.
I really appreciate Mahoney's files as the layout very rarely changes so the conversion is rather quick and relatively painless. Some of the other GPX files I use aren't as easy as the maintainer keeps playing with the file layout. You never know if the same data is going to be in the same field from one version to the next.

CSV files are far
CSV files are far smaller.... I need to keep files as small as possible.
A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!
where?
CSV files are far smaller.... I need to keep files as small as possible.
Do you mean on the unit?
smaller source doesn't matter
Don't confuse smaller source files before loading onto the GPS with how much space the POIs take up on the GPS receiver. I have not seen any good data that supports that a CSV takes less space on the GPS receiver than a GPX with similar information.
Here you go

Good data:
Latest Walmart gpi
CSV = 832 kb
GPX = 1,057 kb
1490LMT 1450LMT 295w
Probably due to...
the fact the the GPX file has more data in it in more areas. The .csv converted file has only the description/comment field filled with all the other information. The .gpx converted file probably has that same field with the addition of phone number, street, zip, state, etc.
Striving to make the NYC Metro area project the best.
Same info
Each location contains all of the same info, it displays it differently on the GPS screen.
Plus GPX works with a bluetooth device and TourGuide file.

What I was trying to get across...
Even though the source files have the same exact data stored within, the POI Loader program probably sets aside more fields in the compiled .gpi version for .gpx source files (for all the additional fields). Even though these fields are empty, the space is still set aside, hence the size increase.

no, it's not the same

The information may be the same, but the added functionality in the GPX will account for its slightly larger size. The GPX file displays the street address in the search screen as well as enabling the bluetooth function. Those will result in a larger file.
