getting directions

Lately my Nuvi 765t is taking forever to access the route. It gets to 99% and just stays there. Sometimes, it gets to 100% and then starts recalculating and again getting hung up at 995. Sometimes, I get to my destination before it gets the directions. Has anyone else had this problem. If so, what did you do to correct it. Thanks.

Two things to try

First, clear your trip log and see if that fixes things.

If the above doesn't help, try a hard reset of your 765T.

Report back to us...

thanks

I will let you know.

hard reset

the hard reset worked and I am now getting directions. However, I backed up the GPX file and then transferred it back to my Nuvi but none of my favorites were there. I don't understand what I did wrong.

rename?

Did you remember to rename current.gpx to something else (like temp.gpx) before you copied it back to the nuvi?

One More Step

Also, once you rename your backed up current.gpx file to temp.gpx, copy it to the Garmin\GPX folder and reboot. Check and make sure everyting is now present in your favorites.

Once confirmed, connect the Nuvi back to the PC and delete the temp.gpx file from the Nuvi.
If you DON'T, you will never be able to delete any of the added favorites since they will reappear after each boot and become part of the current.gpx file.

The current.gpx file re-creates itself on each boot and adds whatever .gpx files are in the folder. So if you leave the file there it will always add it again.

Only .gpx files newer than current.gpx

Current.gpx is the output of the favorites/saved places that existed when the unit was last turned off, plus the contents of any .gpx file whose file date/time is newer than the date/time of the previously written current.gpx file.

Thus temp.gpx type files can be left on the device without impact.

I don't agree. If your attempting, for example, to delete all Favorites from your Nuvi and do that using the Select All - Delete function on the GPS, leaving the temp.gpx file in the GPX folder will result in the data stored in that file being written to the new current.gpx file the next time the device is booted up. You will then have a Nuvi full of the Favorites you were trying to delete.

he's correct

Temp.GPX will be added because there is no existing Current.GPX. Temp and other files are ignored only if there is no existing Current and the date/time stamp would be older than the existing Current.GPX

rename file

.

I didn't rename it. I will do that now and try again. thanks.

I Tried It

I must admit I was in agreement with t923347 in believing if leaving a temp.gpx file in the GPX folder it would always add it to the current.gpx.
I always made a habit of deleting the temp.gpx once the locations were added, how wrong I was.

My test was done with the current.gpx file that I saved when the unit was new, dated 11/20/11, it only contained the three Garmin locations.
Once rebooted it added the 3 locations and appeared in the favorites. I then deleted the 3 and rebooted with the temp file still in the GPX folder. After the reboot it did NOT add them again.
So indeed the time stamp of the current.gpx does come into play when adding new GPX files.

Thank you jgermann and Box Car for educating me.

successful backup

Thanks. It worked. While I was transferring and deleting files. I noticed that the GPX file added an new folder called Archive. It has a folder in it named 1gpx and is dated 9/2/13. Is this something I need? Can I delete this?

This is a trip log

Periodically, my nuvis will write out one of these files. By using Notepad++ with the plugin XML Tools > Pretty Print (XML only - with line breaks), I can see that the file is composed of a number of "trkpt" entries such as

Quote:

<trk>
<name>ACTIVE LOG: 10 JUN 2013 20:14</name>
<trkseg>
<trkpt lat="32.632283" lon="-80.149307">
<ele>12.63</ele>
<time>2013-06-10T21:45:23Z</time>
</trkpt>
...

It appears, by looking at backups, that these files are written when the trip log reaches a size of about 1,000KB.

These can be safely deleted. For my 765, I would go to Tools > My Data > [down arrow] > Clear Trip Log. I will get the question "Do you want to clear trip log?" to which I answer "yes". If there are archives, I will get the additional question "Do you want to clear archived trip log files?" to which I answered "yes".

You could also delete these archive files when the device is connected to your computer - JUST FOLLOWING THE BACKUP OF THE ENTIRE UNIT.

Do you need them? Probably not. Some people might use them to set up a route for friends following, say, a particularly scenic day trip that they wanted to share with others.

try sitting still

This sounds as though in the case of interest you have told it to calculate directions as you travel. Sometimes that can cause extra trouble. Just as an experiment, could you try one of the cases that has caused trouble, but just sitting still in a place with decent satellite view?

Separately, on my 3790LMT, once in a while it fails to indicate that is has started calculating after I hit the Go button on a navigation request. Turning the unit off, then on, and making the request again seems to be a way out, usually.

Thank you

My Nuvii is at almost at capacity so anything that I don't need that I can delete is great.

I am going to try it. Thanks.

SD soon

If you're not already there, soon the largest future map update that your 765T is entitled to receive will not fit in the nuvi's storage and you will be auto-offered a "map update to SD" option:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

Once your map migrates to the SD card, your nuvi's internal storage will have oodles of room. And if the next map update still has sufficient space for an internal map update, you could force the SD option by loading some jpg or mp3 files to the nuvi to fill it up pre-map-update.

?

Craig,
my 765T is up-to-date and I have 513MB of free space. Think I have many updates in store before I run out of room.

what an education

I have learned so much from this posting. I really appreciate all of your help.
