Custom (or Premium Voices)

I never really thought about this before but stumbled across premium voices today. Some of the samples are pretty funny. Pigtones.com and other sites have these.

Has anyone installed any of these things, and if so, what was your experience? For example, I can't tell if using one of these causes you to lose the street names during navigation. It seems like it would but I can't be sure.

Are there any sources of good free ones on the net? Yes, I'm aware of the few on Garmin's site. Yes, I did a search here on the POI Factory discussion boards (and came up empty).

Thanks in advance!

Not TTS

Every one of the voices I've seen offered has not been a Text to Speech voice so I expect you will likely usually lose the ability to have street named spoken. Look around and you'll probably found a warning to this effect in the small print when offered a new voice, free or paid.

for an example

For an example of what Craig speaks of, download one of the FREE voices Garmin offers such as Dr. Nightmare. It offers a comment randomly and gives directions such as "In one quarter mile, turn right." It will not tell you to turn on Main or any other street name. Expect the same from PigTones, but reports are their quality is all over the map as far as being representative of celebrities and their volume.

I just switched back to JILL. Don't really know if it is the 3790 or the voice that may not understand commands in my 3790. I also find the 855 is far better for understanding voice commands.

Karen had a hell of a time to understand "Carlaw Ave" and came up with all sorts of other stuff. Maybe the spoken voice has no relation to listening for voice commands?

I LIKE JILL'S VOICE.

No only does Karen have a nice voice, but I can understand her better than any other voice.

My brain sometimes does not pick up certain syllables, especially at the beginning of the sentence. But with Karen, I get everything!

Text to Speech

Thanks for the info. I can imagine there would be some challenges with a text to speech converter and custom voices.

BTW, I've found it humorous with my Garmin where the built in voice will occasionally pronounce the same street name two different ways during the same trip.

Pig tones..

A Co-worker sent me a gift cert. for Pig Tones (the full lot of them it seems)

Do I like them? Not really. As everyone says, they do not talk street names.

Also they are NOT the real voices but not so good fake. Some do not even work on the Garmin. Some of them need to replace the American voice to use. Others you can copy to the Device directly.

some of the voices crashed my unit in the middle of talking and rebooted itself while driving.

Again.. I would stay with the Garmin voices and stay away for the 3rd party ones (unless you made it yourself)

Just my input about those Voices...

Thanks for saying that. I've also heard this now and then and it irks me that I can not figure out how Garmin's voice engines can have this happen.

An example: In driving a route to a subdivision called Kachina Village, my nuvis tell me to exit the Interstate at "CATCH in ah" Boulevard, but when I reach the stop sign at the end of the exit ramp, I'm told to turn right onto "kah CHEE nah" Boulevard. I also find that Jill correctly pronounces "left" in the middle of a sentence, but when saying it at the end of a sentence, like in "Arriving at Home, on left," the pronounced word left is unintelligible. (One would think that words like "left" should be quite clear in a GPS voice...)
