Just use an 8gig card, It will work fine.

Thanks a lot for your help

Just use an 8gig card, It will work fine for those 2 maps. A 16gig will also work for sure.

16GB is the largest MicroSD

16GB is the largest MicroSD Garmin supports. A 4GB should be more than adequate for one map while an 8GB should be good for two or three maps.

what else is on that SD?
I have a 1490 and 2014.10 loaded just fine after I removed OLD maps.
I think that update is pushing 2GB maybe a little over so another map breaks the bank.

What Else is on the SD

Well, I know you asked the OP, but North America takes 1.9GB. Europe takes 2.9GB. The usable storage space internally is roughly 1.76GB, meaning neither map can fit in its entirety on the internal memory. The OP is likely using MapInstall to manually transfer the maps to the MicroSD rather than having the North America map split between internal and external memory. Under those circumstances, an 8GB is the smallest card he can use. If he attempts to use the 4GB he should be able to get both to fit if he allows North America to be split and doesn't install the JCV files.

The large JCV file for North America is likely why he doesn't have room even with a 4GB card. An 8GB or 16GB will be far better in that instance, not to mention easier to find.

What else is on the card?

Someone help me out with actual numbers. I have 765T that has about 4 G available. I have the US and Canada 2014.1 maps.

This takes
gmapprom.img = 1,736,896KB
GMAP3D.IMG = 187,452KBG
gmapbmap.img = 50,550KB
(so that is 1,7974MB for the maps, plus
D1279180A.JCV = 769,467KB

out of a total 3,367,543 kb on my unit

I have a 4G SD card but there is nothing on it.

I think the 1490 has an internal memory of 2G - and if so, how were the Europe maps loaded to start with.

Nothing wrong with getting an 8Gig card but what is really the minimum card the OP could use.

SD card

From Garmin FAQ

What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?

As long as the automotive device has the latest version of software, the device can use the following maximum card size from the table below. Please use the WebUpdater program at the following link to download the latest device software version: http://www.garmin.com/webupdater

Unit Series Maximum Size of SD Card
nuvi series 8GB1
LIVE series 8GB1
zumo 400 & 500 series 4GB
zumo 220, 350, 600, & 605 series 8GB1
dezl series 8GB1
StreetPilot c500 series 4GB
StreetPilot c300 series2 2GB
StreetPilot i-Series2 2GB
StreetPilot 7200 / 7500 2GB
GVN 52 and 53 8GB1
KNA-G510 8GB1

Depending on the model of the device, it may use either a full size SD card or a microSD card, please refer to its documentation for more information. When using a card with a larger capacity and when the files on the card are large in number and/or size, the device's ability to draw mapping may be slowed.

For OEM dealer devices, please refer to the series above that fits the device.

1Using an SD card size larger than 8GB is not supported for these devices. However, using one will not harm the device but it may or may not work. Also, Garmin supports all speed ratings (including unmarked cards).

2StreetPilot c300 and i-Series units do not currently support the SDHC (High Capacity) cards. All other devices will support SDHC (High Capacity) cards and will support up to class 10 cards.

@jgermann: The only way he

@jgermann: The only way he can fit the US and Europe into less than 6GB of space is by not installing the JCV files. This is because the JCV files take up 1.3GB of memory, assuming they are the full-screen versions with all available junctions in the file.

To recap, based upon my installation (in KB)...

CNNANT 2014.10 - 1,958,688 (excludes French Guiana)
CNNANT 2014.10 Full JCV - 769,467
CNEUNT 2013.41 - 2,971,968
CNEUNT 2013.41 Full JCV - 655,413

Total - 6,355,536 or 6.3GB

The available space on internal and storage card combined is 5.6GB (1.8GB internal space plus 3.8GB space on the MicroSD) which leaves a 700MB shortfall. Therefore, an 8GB card is the smallest he could use if he wanted the full JCV files and both maps. This also assumes he wants to have some space for POI files, a car or two, and possibly a second voice.

@strephon

Thanks for the info. Based on what you present 2 gig on the unit with a 4 gig card would not be enough.

I am still confused as to how he had Europe on the unit to start with. How has the Europe maps grown since the unit was purchases, I wonder.

Best guess is that he only

Best guess is that he only had a region of Europe installed, e.g. Western Europe, and not the whole thing.

No Europe

As I read the OP, there's no indication to me that City Nav Europe has ever been installed to the 1490, although an installation is desired.

I'm still not clear as to why a 1490 with a 4GB card was unable to install all of 2014.10's North America. Maybe it was another Garmin Express glitch that could be resolved with the use of GarminMapUpdater instead.
