Hints & Tips Garmin Nuvi 3597

Hello to all the people that have the new Garmin Nuvi 3597. Have you all learned anything new about this device that isn't in the manual.
- Is there a way to change the font size on the unit. A font size of 8 or less would be nice. This way I would be able to see whole name of the POI.
- How do I use my 8gb Micro SD card I have installed? Are my custom POI files automatically saved to it. What else can I put on this card and how?
- Which voice do you prefer that supports speaking street names & turn by turn directions? Are there any celebrity voices that you like that supports speaking of street names and turn by turn.
- What features do you use and how do you have your unit set up? (Driving Map View Track up, North Up or 3D)
- Will the Traffic option work automatically in cities & states that support it? If there is an accident or long wait times will the unit recommend another route or do you need to live in a state or city that this supports.
- How do I change my Dashboards?
- Is there away to change the location of my app icons? I tried to hold the button down to move them but it doesn't work.
Thanks for all your help!
MODERATOR NOTE:
Here's what to do if POI Loader doesn't find your 3597
- on the GPS main menu screen, touch volume
- on the volume screen, touch and hold the upper right corner
- touch "MTP settings"
- touch "mass storage single session"
Here goes
1. Like all other Nuvi's that I've used, there is no way to change font size.
2. No POIs will not automatically be placed on the SD card although, like all other Nuvi's, you can direct them there using POIloader. Creating a MAP folder on the card will allow you to place additional maps there which the Nuvi can use (topo maps, OpenStreetmaps, etc.)
3. Currently there is no choice of voices that speak street names, at least on US models. Samantha is the only available voice.
4. 3D, Most detail, all Map Tools selected, all Map Layers except Trip Log selected.
5. Yes, traffic will work automatically if your in an area covered by Navteq traffic.
6. Dashboards, like those found in other Nuvi's are not currently available on the 3597.
7. The Apps icon on the Main Menu screen can not be moved. The icons displayed when you press the Apps icon can not be moved.
The one feature on the 3597 that I like is the ability to customize the Where To Search screen. When I press Where To my Search screen displays Go Home icon, Address icon, Custom POI icon, Rest Areas icon, Cities icon, and 3 individual restaurant icons. Changing, deleting and moving any of these items around the search screen is simple by using the Add Shortcut icon.

Hello t923347 thank you for
Hello t923347 thank you for your fast detailed response. I am going on a trip after I get off work tomorrow so I will see how this unit works. I put a bunch of the POI's that I am interested in on this unit. I do like how portable this unit is compared to my Garmin Streetpilot 2720.
Hopefully they will add some of the features like the fonts and other things I mentioned. Knowing Garmin that is probably a dream. Thanks again.

Intersting, please confirm are you saying there is only 1 choice (Samantha) for TTS voices on American models?
Are there NO male counterparts, or choice of British or Australian English that are TTS voices?
If that is the case that sucks in my opinion.
Seems like Garmin keeps removing favorable options when replaced with newer units.

Samantha is the only voice
Samantha is the only voice that speaks real directions on the 3597. Sucks that Karen is not available on the 3597.
Oh My !!!!!

Thanks for the info, go figure, Garmin adds unnecessary crap at the expense of losing useful features.

Yes,
Yes, I confirm that there is only one TTS voice available on the 3597. That being said, please remember that the voice(s) on the 3597 are completely different voice files than what are available on other Nuvi's and I fully expect that different voices will become available over time. Personally I miss Jack but on the other hand I've had Nuvi's long enough to remember the days when he wasn't around eiher.
I did do a reset on the 3597 and set it up with a Locale of Australia in order to see, if like other late model Nuvi's, different options would be available. There was an Australian voice available (Michelle possibly) but I don't think it was noted as being able to read street names (TTS) but I can't confirm that now as once I selected American Keyboard and Language as my defaults only Samantha was listed as a TTS voice.

TTS Voices
I too was disappointed with only one TTS English voice on my Nuvi 50LM. But as you may discover, when I updated something else on my Nuvi I was offered several other voices to add and 3 or 4 of them were TTS English including my favorite Karen from "down under".

Not
Not the case with the 3597. Again, the voice files are different from those on the 50 and other Nuvi models.

I own a Nuvi 765T. I just recently bought a Nuvi 2595LMT for my daughter. I noticed that it had only one TTS voice (Jill) out of a total of 13 possible voices. I assume that later updates will add more choices, but I wondered if I could get a new voice into the 2595 myself.
I started by looking at the [nuvi]\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml
file in the 2595. This is the file that Garmin uses to control how units work. What I found in the 2595 .xml file was that there were lots of "voice" files listed. However, when I looked into the [nuvi 2595]\Voice, I found only the 13 voices mentioned above.
It looked like there was hope. So I decided to compare the .xml files in the 765T and the 2595.
What I found can be summarized by the following:

Using the "size" as a comparison method of the 765 and the 2595, I determined that 6 of the 13 files were the same as the corresponding voices in my 765 (which has a total of over 60 .vpm voices).
Since the 2595 .xml file had elements for perhaps 80 possible voices, I determined that the possible - as opposed to the actual voices (.vpm files) - were distinguished by having "0" as the number in the "Major" and "Minor" elements (see Jack in the 2595 above)
DO NOT TRY WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ UNLESS YOU DO A COMPLETE BACKUP OF YOUR UNIT.
So, I copied the "Jack" .vpm file from the 765 \Garmin\Voice folder to the \Voice folder in the 2595.
Then I edited the 2595 .xml file (using Notepad++) to replace the "0" in "Jack's" Major element with a "1" and the "0" in the "Minor" element with "80". I saved that file.
After safely disconnecting and firing up the 2595, I went to Settings > [down arrow] > Language & keyboard > Voice Language and - lo and behold - "American English-Jack" was available. I selected it and put the unit into Simulation Mode and did a Where To? to my daughter's house. Answering yes to "Do you want to simulate driving ..." set "Jack" giving the turns.

Good job, Jgermann...
Leave it to Garmin to artificially "cripple" one of their newer units to use only a fraction of available voices. They're getting really good at disabling and dumping features that loyal users are used to. When "upgrading" to a new Garmin, I always feel like I'll be losing *something* in the process...and sadly, Garmin has never let me down in this respect.

Yes...like the security PSWRD. My new 2595 asks for a double tap with a lock symbol, which in reality is a nusiance. What's in Garmin's mindset these days after dropping the secure password feature and yet we have this fake lock thing?

Good detective work jgermann.
I have to point out that it's my understanding that the 3597 using a different voice file/voice engine than previous Nuvi's so your fix may not be applicable to this device. Personally I'll leave it up to some other brave soul to see if your fix works on the 3597 but to help out, this is what is showing in the GarminDevice.xml file for the 3597's only available TTS voice:

@jgermann,
Good work with your experiment.
Garmin does use different compression engines on different Nuvis. What I have discovered is the higher end units using Jack & Jill have far larger VPN files, usually between 13 to 17 MB for their English speaking voices.
Since both the 2595 and the 3597 are high end units, I find it unacceptable to limit the voices on these units. I also see the 3597 is using the small files (larger compression Samantha) on the 3597.
It looks to me like they're saving on memory space using the smaller files.
Last year my friend who owns a 265W liked my Jill voice over Samantha that was on his 265W. I copied the Jill.vpn from my 2460 to his voice folder. It didn't work and then I saw his Samantha voice was less than 3 MB (I believe). That told me he had a different compression engine.
From your description in modifying the GarminDevice.xml file, I now realize without the modification the Nuvi still would not add any new voices added to the Voice folder. It relies on the XML file to know what's available.
Even if I had modified the GarminDevice.XML file to show Jill available on his 265W it would never have worked due to the different compression engine.
I suppose a good rule of thumb would be file size, those units with larger VPN files will accept the English VPN group files.
Both my 2460 and my 660 using the larger files show these English TTS voices.

I suspect the "Real Directions" feature of the 3597 requires additional verbiage that would explain the larger file size. Have you ever tried to run Turboccc's TTS Voice Editor against the 3597's Samantha VPM file? I would not be surprised if it fails to work.

Wow that's huge, it's no wonder they only offer one TTS voice on the 3597. I learn something new every day. I certainly would have thought the Samantha voice would be universal in size at about 3mb.
I also highly doubt TTS Voice Editor would work.
With Turboccc's new job, it's unlikely he will be updating the program to accomodate newer units.

I owned a 3597 for over a month then returned it cause for me it was NOT worth the money.
To answer you traffic question: The traffic option works while driving through any city that has a HD signal. When driving in a city that has HD traffic you will get a mini screen on the right of your main screen describing the distance to the traffic and how long the delay would be. I found the traffic to be totally unreliable cause sometimes it states traffic and there was not traffic. Sometimes it didn't show traffic and I was sitting in traffic.
I wouldn't rely on this traffic service because it doesn't receive a signal in all parts of a large metropolitan area plus the accuracy is shady at best.

Can someone with a 3597 check for new voices? From:

I see that Garmin may now have four English language TTS3 voices for you:
Serena, 1.30, 6/10/13
Samantha, 1.20, 5/30/13
Daniel, 1.30 6/10/13
Jack, 1.30, 6/12/13
Also, can someone confirm if the new TTS3 voices are only for the 3597 or if more of the nuvi xxx7 devices use them? Thanks.
There
There are now 7 TTS3 english voices available for the 3597.
The default and the only one that ships with the US 3597, is Samantha. There is also now:
Australian English - Lee and Karen
British English - Daniel and Serena
Indian English - Sangeeta
American English - Jack
All of these are available through your myGarmin.com account under myDashboard - Updates - Voices.

I recall when I got my first
I recall when I got my first C340, I read somewhere that the American jack voice was supposed to make the nav function a bit better. So I had used him on all my successor units until the 2797 which only offered samantha with the real directions. I was afraid that voice would not be as clear as jack, but so far she works fine for me.

There are now 7 TTS3 english voices available for the 3597.
The default and the only one that ships with the US 3597, is Samantha. There is also now:
Australian English - Lee and Karen
British English - Daniel and Serena
Indian English - Sangeeta
American English - Jack
All of these are available through your myGarmin.com account under myDashboard - Updates - Voices.
So British English Emily has been replaced with Serena.
Indian English Sangeeta?
Now what genius at Garmin came out with that one.
Are all these voices comparable in size with the huge Samantha voice?

American English Jack is over 25000KB in size. I have not installed any of the other TTS3 voices.
Since there are probably millions of people in India and Pakistan that speak English, why wouldn't Garmin have a voice specific to them.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Although Jack is substantially smaller than Samantha, it's still large for one voice file.
Since Britain ruled India until 1947 I would think one of the Brirish English voices would be understood. I wasn't aware that Pakastani's spoke Indian English.

Enter Sangeeta in Google and you'll find references to her being an actor with both Pakistan and India references. Anyhow I think English is pretty much English no matter what country it's being spoken in.

Anyone having this issue with this model? Each time I connect my unit to my laptop, it goes into usb mode and after a few seconds, it loads the maps, I then have to disconnect the unit and then it connects as it should the first time around.

Actually
I've never turned on the voice. I wouldn't know one from the other. I liked the tool to edit words I did try that and it was hilarous.

Was the Nuvi already on when this occurred. If yes, keep the Nuvi off and just plug in into the laptop. It should power on automatically and go into PC mode.

Have you tried clearing your Trip Log to see if that helps. Instructions are on page 6 of the owners manual.

My favorite is the English British voice with real directions
Hi Everyone,
I have the Nuvi 3597 and it took many hours of looking for a decent voice because I did not like the TTS voice with real directions called Samantha and already was installed so I found out that I needed to download the Garmin web updater.
With my hope high I loaded it on my Mac and looked to for a British voice. I updated my unit and found out the hard way it did not have TTS nor real directions.
I phoned Garmin tech support and they told me to install the Garmin Express and I finally got me UK voice with real directions!
After running the Garmin Express, I clicked on the Device icon then on the Advanced menu button. After that I was able to install all the voices and TTS files I wanted.
I hope this helps take away hours of wasted time for others who also wanted an alternative to Samantha.
As I posted
As I posted here a few months back the TTS voices for the 3597 are different voices than those that work with older Nuvi's. These new voices are TTS3 and there are currently 7 English language voices for this new format.
For anyone that doesn't want to use Garmin Express, with it's many problems, the TTS3 voices are available through your myGarmin.com account under myDashboard - Updates - Voices.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.
Creating a custom dashboard for your 3597
6. Dashboards, like those found in other Nuvi's are not currently available on the 3597.
In the second post in this thread I answered the OP's questions as I understood things at the time. One of his questions was:
- How do I change my Dashboards?
and I responded with the answer in the above quote.
I have since learned that you can in fact easily create a custom dashboard for the 3597 to include things like Time to Destination, Direction of Travel, Distance to Via Point, etc., much the same as you could with the Map Data Layout - More Data option in other Nuvi's that allowed you to display this type of information on the Map Screen.
Do if you want to use a customized dashboard here is how to establish one:
1. First you'll need to insure that you have the Trip Data feature activated on your 3597. To do this go to Settings - Map & Vehicle - Map Tools and tap the Trip Data item to place a check mark in it. Then tap Save and return to the main menu screen.
Note - you can tap any or all of the Map Tools items so that they can all be used from the 3597's map screen if required.
2. From the main menu screen tap View Map.
3. On the Map screen, tap the 3 bar icon in the lower right corner and then tap the Trip Data icon in the screen that will pop up on the map screen.
4. By default, with no destination inputted, the Nuvi will display the default information of:
- Trip A (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Trip B (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Elevation
Note - this is similar to the information available on the "speedo" screen you see if you press the Speed readout on the map screen.
5. To customize these 3 fields just tap on any one of them. Doing this will open the Customize Trip Data screen. Scroll through the list and tap on any one the available items (green plus sign) to replace the currently displayed item with the one you have selected.
When your done making the changes to all the fields you want to alter, return to the map screen and your fully customized "dashboard" has been created.
Now to create a custom dashboard that will be used when you have a destination entered on your Nuvi.
1. Enter a destination using the Where To screen and let the Nuvi calculate the route.
2. On the map screen, tap the 3 bar icon in the lower right corner and then tap the Trip Data icon in the screen that will pop up on the map screen. This is only required if the Trip Data fields are not already being displayed on the map screen.
3. Again, by default the Trip Data displayed will be:
- Trip A (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Trip B (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Elevation
4. To customize these 3 fields just tap on any one of them. Doing this will open the Customize Trip Data screen. Scroll through the list and tap on any one the available items (green plus sign) to replace the currently displayed item with the one you have selected.
The available display data for a "destination entered" dashboard include the following items:
Arrive in
Destination Distance
Time to Turn
Distance to Turn
Max Speed
Moving Average
Overall Average
Stopped
Moving Time
Total Time
Elevation
Current Time
Time to Via Point
Via Point Distance
Along with the 3 default items, so a fair bit of customization can be obtained.
When you done making the changes to all the fields you want to alter, return to the map screen and your fully customized "destination entered dashboard" has been created.
For one more piece of customization you can make, tap the icon to the left of the 3 bar icon on the map screen. Depending on whether you have a destination entered or not, you'll get a list of items that can be displayed in this field, in place of what's there now. Tap the one you want to replace what's there.
Hopefully this information will allow you to customize your 3597 so that it displays the information you saw with the More Data options on your older Nuvi that had this feature.
Note - these same procedures may also be applicible to other 2013 model Nuvi's like the 2797 for example, but have not been tested on any unit other than the 3597.
Also Note - to clear the custom dashboard from the map screen just tap the X in the top left corner of the dashboard display. To return it to the screen, tap the 3bar icon and select Trip Data.

How to connect to Mapsource
I was hoping to find some info on how to connect the newer Nuvis like the 3597 to Mapsource? I am surprised there is no instructions on how to do so in this thread.

I am on the road right now sending from a tablet. Look in the faqs, tutorials or forums for a discussion of switching your nuvi from MTP mode to MS mode and once switched, Mapsource should see the nuvi.
What's the difference
What's the difference between the 3590 and the 3597?

Voices and Not in your Head
There are many other Voices that speak street Names.
I myself Like the Australian LEE voice there is also British Serena, and Daniel, and 2 Americans Jack and Samantha.
You can also Buy for $10.00 Homer Simpson with turn by turn from Garmin....
You can get more custom cars also from here http://www.vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com/
Use the custom cars at your own risk, every once in a while they can cause issues like make the nuvi reboot I have all custom cars If I feel like being in a Camaro I put one on the screen, BMW M3 No problem.

Speaks street names VS. turn-by-turn directions

Just to be clear for others, especially the new Garmin device owners, all voices give directions but only some speak street names. The cutesy add-on voices do not speak street names. From Garmin:
Voices are for entertainment purposes only and do not provide text-to-speech navigation.
The nuvi 3597 offers these English language voices that speak street names:
Serena, Samantha, Daniel, Jack, Lee, Karen, and Sangeeta
Other free English languages offered to the nuvi 3597 includes these non-street naming voices:
American Michelle, Australian Matilda, British James, and British Kate.
The premium and free voices offered by Garmin:
http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/voices/
all do not speak street names. Similarly, other companies offer voices compatible with Garmin devices but none speak street names.
Keep in mind that the US nuvi devices fall into three categories regarding internal voice software and each nuvi can only use the voices compatible with their device's voice engine:
