Garmin 2797 LMT

If this has been covered forgive me & point me there. I ordered the big 7 inch garmin 2797 LMT saturday at Best Buy , should be in wednesday. Anybody else using this nuvi...any issues? ..thanks Stan393

Very few comments, but

2797

Overall I really like this new model, as an upgrade from my 1490t. Especially like: powered mount, sleep mode/instant on, traffic alerts, large screen, 'up ahead'. Not happy with blue tooth: low volume, poor quality sound, connectivity problems,so if BT is important to you be sure to test it immediately with your cell phone. See my lengthy review I put on Amazon;just query nuvi 2797 and look for customer reviews wven though I didn't buy it from them. Also posted review on GPS City, who I did buy from.

Did load POI factory's red light camera 'app' and it works fine; JM's tech support/general advise very useful.

Hey Stan,
I too am a new user. Actually so far, I've spent 3 different days and multiple attempts with Garmin support to down load my free maps, etc. and now just trying to get the unit to stay on!!! My only success so far has been with the very pleasant and professional support folks at Garmin. In fact, they are replacing my new unit with another for another try.
I know Garmin has a strong reputation but the best tech info offered was that:
* we've never seen anything like this before......
* we think it's not the garmin but with your
equipment _ standard support response!!!!!!!

Welcome

Welcome to The Factory, mjs.

Garmin can be particulary helpful at times--and not so much at others. With time, you'll realize when Garmin is the place to go for help vs. asking for advice or searching the forums and faqs here. Given what you've described, I wonder if you computer may be going to sleep or your Garmin USB cable is defective and preventing a full continous connection between the computer and nuvi. On the other hand, the tips below may get you updated with the current nuvi and let you avoid needing a replacement from Garmin.

Regarding the map update (to the current 2014.10 map), I don't know where you stand with it and what you've tried so far, so these tips may or may not be of use to you:

-make sure your nuvi is fully charged and your computer is set NOT to go to sleep after a certain period of inactivity.

-I assume you have a good broadband internet connection.

-I expect you've tried using Garmin Express as the software that's being used for a map update. Many here, including me, suggest using GarminMapUpdater instead:

Click the link for the appropriate operating system to download.

Garmin Map Updater PC:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

Garmin Map Updater Mac:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

If you do decide to use Garmin MapUpdater rather than Garmin Express in the future, note that you also should install and use WebUpdater for device updates other than maps:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

I think your nuvi may have a major firmware update available:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40352

And please check the "Learn" and "faq" tabs here at The Factory for important info like setting your computer's folder options, changing from MTP to Mass Storage, backing up all files on your nuvi now rather than waiting for a crash and then wishing you had a backup, etc.

There's lots of useful stuff here and helpful folks that will get you using Custom POIs, etc.

Also @ mjs4417

Also make sure that the USB cable you are using is plugged in to a main USB port and not a hub.

Does anyone know..?

This is question about GPS routing, If you have two nuvi GPS, one is recent and the other one is 7 years old. Both GPS are updated with the latest maps, my question is, if you plan a trip, would the established route be identical, providing that all settings and route preferences are same on both..?

Thanx BiLL Solomon

Both units have a routing engine coded into their software. The route selection would be identical except where there were differences in the routing algorithms that would pick one possible road over another.

My units always give me vastly different routes to St. Louis. And my way is better than both.

back again and still trying to get my 2797 started!!!

Stan, et.al. ,
Well, Garmin sent me a "new?" 2797 and I've tried both your suggestions and Garmin suggestions and still don't think I'm set up!! But, how would I know anyway???
I've used 3 different "in good working condition" laptops all of which via either hard wire dsl connections or wireless connections and still I meet up with brick walls and dead ends. Never have I approached a place that yet says "successfully completed!!
I'd like to use this expensive toy someday but a simple paper map is really looking good lately.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

must read

send to gps from google maps is not working as of 10/11/13..I found the way you can send locations from mobile google maps to garmin thru smartphone link. lately mobile google maps has been sending wrong locations to garmins thru smartphone link like 1000's miles away since garmin doesn't take addresses just cordinates. First find the location in mobile google maps them try to zoom in the location you want to send it garmin. Then press and hold on the very next to location red icon for one or two second and you will get new red icon very next to your location on google maps. Then same as usual just tap on the new red icon then you will get few options and tap on share and choose smartphone link.

Once you get ready to download the cameras from Poi Factory. If you decide you want voice alerts see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 . The 2797 needs wav and sox.exe to work. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois . Enjoy your new GPS.
