Nuvi 2797 Help

I have a new NUVI 2797. It seems like a real nice piece of hardware and has a very nice large 7" display. Sound quality is excellent.

After receiving it, I loaded up my special POI's using POI Loader with no problems except my TourGuide files. I have been loading TourGuide files in my other Garmins without any problem and they work just as advertised. I usually just put them in as a CSV file along with the icon and sound files also using POI Loader. With this new unit, the device takes to data with no errors and displays the various TourGuide POI's on the map correctly but it will not announce any of them when you get within the distance set when you manually load them thru POI Loader.... not a peep or visual alert of any kind. I have even tried converting the CSV file to GPX and load it but I get exactly the same results.

I talked to a Garmin Tech and he said that TourGuide was an old feature and he indicated that is not being tested on the newer devices and they couldn't say if it would work or not.

Anybody got any ideas that might allow the TourGuide feature to work????

Did you forget to install

Did you forget to install the wav and sox.exe ? http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .It does not play mp3 like the 765 you have listed.

Yes

Yes, I bet charlesd45 has nailed it.

What troubles me is the statement by the Garmin Customer Service tech. If the statement is true, it's terrible news for us. But if as I expect the answer is false, it yet again shows the lack of knowledge of the techs and their winging it by creating totally untrue statements to get customers off the phone. I don't know which is worse.

Nuvi 2797 help

Yes, I did add SOX in the POI Loader directory... it made no difference. I loaded files from PhantomAlert and the unit speaks all of their warnings perfectly fine but all of their points are right on the routes, which is why I always like using TourGuide.

Did you include a wav file

Did you include a wav file for the TourGuide files? Did you download the sox.exe from here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 ?
The biggest problems with the alerts not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click OK. See https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

yep

yep... I put valid WAV files in the folder and the files are all named correctly... they are the same ones that work on my other Garmins.

Long shot

@london, this is a long shot but you have been around long enough and have several Garmins, so I have to take a long shot.

Check the version of sox.exe in your C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader\ folder.

To do so, create a bat file in that same directory with these two lines.

Quote:

sox --version
pause

Once you create and save the bat file (I called mine "sox-ver.bat"), double click it and you should get

Quote:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader>sox --version sox: SoX v14.0.1

c:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

If you have the correct sox.exe from the link I listed and it is in the correct location. Plus all the files are name the same except for the extensions. It should work. Example
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.csv
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.bmp
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.wav

You have taken care of seeing the double extensions per the link I listed right ? Per your earlier post you use the manual mode for poiloader and set a distance for the alert. Have you tried to set a larger distance to increase the radius alert? It should be noted not sure which one but recent updates relocated the location of the poiloader folder for the sox.exe file to go in. What Windows version are you using?

more

I'll check the version as soon as I get a chance. I'm at work and it is at home and I have an appointment this evening and may not get to it tonight.

I have tried making the alert distance larger and still it doesn't work.... no visual or audio alerts, yet the icons are right there in the proper location.

I made sure that I put the sox file in the POI Loader directory ... I'll check to make sure there isn't a duplicate someplace.

And as I said before, these are the exact same files that work properly on my Nuvi 855 and 2460.. the difference is that they play MP3 files.

I got a second response from Garmin that says only Nuvi's that play MP3 can support TourGuide.

it may be an issue with this model

If the files work in your 2460 it says to me you have the correct version of SOX and WAV files. Also, the 2460 does not play MP3 files as that feature was discontinued in all the 4 digit models and is not in the 2 digit models either. Only some of the 3 digit models had MP3 and they were the "premier" models of each series.

The 855 does play mp3 but not the 2460. Did you use use new wav files are did you convert mp3's?

I think Box Car may have hit on the problem

What I would try is a file with just a single location along with a wav file. Run those through POI Loader and then test to see if you get the alert played. If the unit doesn't play the alert, it tells me there may be a problem with the internal OS for the system. Also, check to see you have alerts activated for custom POI. It's a separate entry under settings on my 885. It may be on yours as well.

Garmin may not test custom POI with alerts and, as officially they don't support SOX, it may signal a shift in their view of how customers use their units.

On other test you can try is to copy the GPI file from your 855 and see if it works. If it does, then I would run POI Loader so it writes the file to the computer and then copy it to the target unit.

Could not find copy of your manual but did find one for another one of the newer models.Check the settings out for any problems or some helpful information.

For Proximity Alerts Settings.Select settings proximity alerts.
Audio-set the style of alert that plays when you approach proximity points.
Alerts-Sets the type of proximity points for which alerts are played.May be able to get some guidance here on what the problem may be.

It is my understanding you do get voice alerts for other files. The problem is with only the TourGuide files. For TourGuide to work it requires a mp3 or wav file. Depending on what model you have.

You could remove the TourGuide from the files and set alert distance using poiloader in manual mode. Then see if these files now give you a voice alert with the wav files or the default bong.

The problem with just

The problem with just entering them as regular POIs is that many of them are not right along the road and the unit will only alert when it is right along the navigation path. That's what I liked about TourGuide.. it would alert you as long as the POI was within the radial distance from you ... it didn't have to be right along the navigation path.

I might try pulling the GPI file from the other unit and see what happens. Thanks

Tour Guide POI is working fine on my 2797LMT

poi-factory.com's Rest Areas Combined (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6643) uses Tour Guide, and it is working fine on my 2797LMT.

On my 2797 screen I see my Rest Area icon, and 3 miles before I get to the rest area, I get an audible alert. In POI Loader, I set an alert for 3 miles ahead.

I am using...
o Windows 7 32-bit
o Garmin POI Loader ver 2.7.2
o 3rd-Party POI Extra_POI_Editor ver 5.32
o 3rd-Party helper for POI Loader - SOX ver 14.0.1

file structure of my data for POI Loader
..\POI_Loader_Data (folder)
Rest Areas (3mi alert) - (sub folder)
Rest Areas USA.bmp
Rest Areas USA.csv
Rest Areas USA.wav

Not to quibble but what you show is the structure for an "along the route" alert. In order for this to be a TourGuide alert you will need to have the keyword TourGuide in all three file names.

..\POI_Loader_Data (folder)
Rest Areas (3mi alert) - (sub folder)
TourGuide Rest Areas USA.bmp
TourGuide Rest Areas USA.csv
TourGuide Rest Areas USA.wav

The exact position of TourGuide isn't important, but it has to be the same in all the files.

Lilla

The difference between the two is the proverbial round hole and the square peg. Tour guide alerts draw a circle around the point with a radius of the alert distance. Along the route alerts are the square peg - if you are pointed at it it alerts whenever you are within the distance (length) of the box (peg).
