Garmin NUVI 25x5LMT Traffic Issues-Does Your Traffic Icon Always Stay Green?

I started a previous thread because I thought I may have a Traffic coverage issue specific to Toronto.

I have just received a NUVI 2555LMT and I had no past experience with using traffic and how the 2555 is supposed to operate until a recent trip to Toronto, which should have coverage.

My Icon remains Green whether I'm in areas where I should get coverage and also in areas where I should not.

I also get the following message if I touch the Traffic Icon: "The traffic receiver is not receiving a traffic signal. The traffic signal may be weak, or traffic data may not be available for your location."

Since my initial posting, I received a reply from williston:
“The icon used to change from green when traffic signal was good to gray when it's lost or out of date. -Now-, it stays green no matter what is going on with the signal. As soon as you plug it in and the application comes up you get a green icon. If you touch the traffic icon you'll see it giving the "searching signal" message and no bars. I know this is the case because in the past, when I went to Maine out in the boonies where there was no signal the icon would turn gray indicating no data. It's green all the time now and will actually -stay- green for a little while even after unplugging the receiver from the Nuvi.”

I would appreciate any feedback from other NUVI 25x5 and 24x5 users that might have a similar experience. We have a better chance of action from Garmin if we can back it up from experience.

Cross Street vs. Current Street

They also fussed with the street indicator at the top of the screen when not navigating during (I believe)the last firmware update. When the unit (2595)was new it indicated what cross street you were approaching. At some point not too long ago, I noticed that it switched to the street you were currently on. Personally I preferred this, although I can understand why some folks like the upcoming street indication. Well... My Nuvi is now back to reporting the upcoming street after the last FW update.

Why they keep messing with things like this is beyond me.

Speaking of things they messed with:

They also changed the "Speed Limit" icon: it's bigger now. (and it only says "Limit": they dropped the "Speed"
WOO-HOO! rolleyes

To be fair though, the "exit view" graphics keep getting better and better. They were improved after the last FW update, and this time they are even clearer with a better fount for the lettering. They just seem much more sharp and the sign and lettering looks bigger on the screen.

Agree 100%. I've said this many times in the past so I'll just continue to be redundant and say it again...Garmin seems to have a feature "dart board" that's used to decide if/if not a feature will make it to the new GPS unit lineup. There's never seemingly any rhyme nor reason as to what they'll decide to use/not use. With every single GPS unit I've purchased in the nuvi line, I have always lost a feature...upgrading to a new GPS will always result in losing something you use or are used to. Along the same line, we've also regained the lost feature(s) only to lose something else in the process.

Here's a brief list of things that were offered by some units and some that keep yo-yo-ing back and forth from model to model. Some are also added/removed with firmware "updates". All of these can likely be easily configured via firmware to be user-selectable. Instead, they are forced one way or another according to the Garmin DartBoard.

1. Keypress/touchscreen "beep" sound

2. "Battery has been fully charged" indication screen (what the heck?! Why on earth can we not see this? Every battery operated device I own can easily show this and it's even available under the nuvi's hidden diagnostics menu. Why not show it? SMH...)

3. "Bong" sound preceding the next spoken instruction.

4. Top green status bar operation when NOT navigating a route (displays the street you are on or next upcoming cross street name).

5. Decreasing mileage to your next turn in the route on the route info page (on the nuvi 3490 (at least), they sit fixed at the full distance between turns, never decreasing as you approach the next turn in the list).

6. Ability to enable/disable Auto-zoom (this is 100% locale specific, changing your locale can enable/disable this feature).

7. Traffic icon operation.

8. The display of your Favorite's names on the GPS's moving map screen.

There are likely more but that's all I can recall at the moment.

YES! Thanks for bringing this up! The euro set-ups have this as well as a few others that aren't available if we select "U.S." during the initial set-up. Another feature that comes to mind is being able to manually select the traffic provider, more color choices for the map and I'm sure a few more. Makes absolutely no sense. (To me anyway!) razz

And while I'm on a roll...(uh-oh) rolleyes , what's up with the pathetic included icons for spots added to your address book? My 255 has a few dozen very nice icon's to choose from to add to your addresses: school's that look like schools, college icon, Doctor, and on and on. The 2595 has about 10 (?) generic looking icons that no one even knows what they mean. Later, when they pop up on the map, you can't tell if it's Grandma's house, the local power/sewer plant, or the State Prison/Insane Asylum!

Cartoon speech bubble icons. They are four times larger than they should be and block much more of the map than they should be. So much for reducing the "screen clutter" that Garmin claims that users are always complaining about...instead, just block the screen with a giant speech bubble icon with no real identifying qualities...brilliant! rolleyes

The trouble is that we are "old folks" that aren't looking for the latest and greatest flash in the pan. We are like the proverbial pachyderm that can remember when features were present and then taken away only to be reintroduced as the "next big thing." While I love my 885 I'm seriously considering replacing it with one of the newest only for a larger (5 inch) screen and better JCV file. I've had it since early 2009, the delays in pulling up the full junction view and lack of processing power to handle my alert files and directions is cumbersome.

I have to say you are probably correct here and I'll probably trade up eventually to get the bigger/higher res screen. It's a tough pill to swallow when they take away good features for "new and improved".

And HEY! Who are you calling "old folks"??!! I'm younger than the guy pictured in my posts! (Not by much) wink
