Saved Favorites Won't Show After Update

Well this is a first for me. I updated my 3490 to firmware v.8.10 and the maps to 2014.30 via Garmin Express (first time using it). I backed up all my favorites prior to updating via Basecamp. I wanted to cleanout some old ones so I erased all of them from the unit and went to restore them after the update from Basecamp. When I click "internal storage", I see the waypoints from the unit in Basecamp but when I run the Nuvi by itself and click Where To - Saved, it says No data available. First time I experienced this.

Any ideas?

.

Rename the backup to temp.gpx, and slide it back in.

Reboot. Voila.

I did a Clear All User Data and that worked but had to reset everthing. As for renaming the backup, which file specifically? The files made in Basecamp?

I did an export: 12_15_2013 8_37_32 PM.gpx
and
I did a backup: BaseCamp 2013-12-15.Backup
and
I did an export of internal storage: Internal Storage.gpx

Not sure which one you mean.

Also, in the past when I hit Saved favorites, I just saw the favorites. Now they are all under the date and time stamped folder:

12_15_2013 8_37_32 PM

I miss the Mapsource days!

I agree

I still use it to create any routes or favorites, and then have to switch over to BaseCamp to load them. Sure wish they would've updated Mapsource to work with the newer units.

Juggernaut?

When you get a chance, can you please verify which file to rename? I backed up three different things so I'm not sure which one to rename and put back into the GPX folder.

Thanks.

The file current.gpx contains the favorites.

Map source works for the newer units if you put them into mass storage mode. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416

Love that old Mapsource still

Well said. That old geezer still has some good life left. I used it still all the time.

The file current.gpx contains the favorites.

I went back and checked an old backup I made and current.gpx had a size of 1K and temp.gpx had a size of 51K. As for renaming the backed up files to temp.gpx, should it be the one with the time and date stamp?

Restoring Favorites.

Let's recall that - on your device - current.gpx is an "output" only file. Every time the device is turned on, it writes a new current.gpx file.

What it writes to current.gpx will be all of the Favorites/Saved Places that were in effect when the unit was last turned off PLUS all entries in .gpx files the device finds anywhere on the unit WHOSE FILETIME IS GREATER THAN THE FILETIME OF THE PREVIOUS "current.gpx".

To restore Favorites/Saved Places, you can copy an old current.gpx to your unit (recommended into the GPX folder) and rename it to whatever name you want (Garmin recommends temp.gpx).

Note that you can build "favorites/saved places" offline in a .gpx file (maybe you will call the file "More Places I Like.gpx) and copy them to the unit and they will be merged with the existing Favorites/Saved Places the next the device boots up.

Your two gpx files are out of sync

Your two gpx files are out of sync. My guess is that the temp.gpx contains your favorites, being 51K in size.

An easy way to check is to open the gpx files with an xml editor and check/edit the contents. I use the free MicroSoft xml notepad:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7973

Once verified and modified the gpx file to your liking, you can then follow the methods suggested to reconstruct your favorites.

In addition to temp.gpx, I also use names such as 20131219.gpx. I have a collection of them saved so I could reconstruct the favorites to a specific date or occasion if I wish. Never did find a real need for it though.

current.gpx

I believe it also contains the cookie crumb trail of where you've been. I know on mine if I go to the menu option to clear it (but not the Favorites) the current.gpx shrinks considerably in size then starts to grow again as it collects data points as I travel about. I don't fully understand shadow files, but believe that current.gpx is a copy of the unseen working file containing your Favorites and a new copy is created each time the nüvi is either powered of or on. A hard reset and possibly an update may flush the contents of the hidden file and on a reboot, current now contains nothing, reflecting the fact that the hidden file no longer holds your Favorites. The solution is to make a copy of current.gpx and name it temp.gpx. It is my understanding that if temp.gpx exists in the same folder as current.gpx, during a power on cycle, the contents of temp is copied to the hidden file. In this way, temp serves as an ever-present online backup of your Favorites from the time you manually made the copy. Temp survives a hard reset. As with any backup, it is prudent to refresh it periodically so it will include any additional Favorites that have been added since the last copy was created, and particularly before you perform any updates or decide it is time to do a hard reset. It never hurts to keep a 2nd copy of temp.gpx on your PC just in case something really goes wrong or you get a new GPS (Garmin) and want to easily copy your existing Favorites to it. My unit is a little long in the tooth, but I believe the newer models work similarly. Maybe someone else will confirm that. I know MapSource was another way to backup and restore your Favorites and I haven't explored BaseCamp to see if works the same way. An advantage to making a temp.gpx file is that if you are have to do a hard reset and your running copy of MapSource/BaseCamp isn't at hand, you won't have to wait until you get home to recover your Favorites. If my understanding of the process is incorrect, please enlighten me as I really believe this is the way it works.

waypoints, tracks and routes

Yes, the Garmin gpx files contain the favorites, tracks and routes too.

Opening the gpx files with Mapsource and you can see all of those elements listed and displayed on the map, if you also open the map where the favorites, where you have been recently, and routes that you have in the current.gpx. They are listed as Waypoints, Tracks and Routes respectively.

With an xml editor, you see them listed as wpt, trk, and rte.

I do not know about the shadow files. Somebody more knowledgeable could chime in. I can see all my favorites, recent tracks and programmed routes in current.gpx.

Older tracks do get stashed away in the gpx archives.

Timestamp is important

I just looked at my 2595. I have been fooling around with it some so it would give a good test. In the GPX folder were three files
current.gpx
Kiawah quickcare.gpx
Kiawah twentyfourhour pharmacy.gpx

The Kiawah files were there because of a vacation earlier this year. But - had sometime recently after that vacation I had cleared all the Favorites/Saved Places for some test or the other. Since the Kiawah files had timestamps earlier in time than the date of the current.gpx file, their contents WAS NOT BEING ADDED to Favorites/Saved Places upon each boot up.

I attached my nuvi to the computer and navigated to the GPX folder on the device. I then used a portable, freeware program called NewFileTime to change the timestamp of the two Kiawah files to the current time (which would be a few minutes after the timestamp of the current.gpx file in that same folder).

Safely disconnecting my nuvi, I booted it up and, lo, the entries in the Kiawah files were in the Favorites/Saved Places as they had been after I initially put them in the GPX folder before going on vacation.

You can download NewFileTime from http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=newfiletime&m=
and try a few tests yourself.

So TXRVer's suggestion that you keep a sort of backup copy of Favorites/Saved Places in the GPX folder (calling it temp.gpx) will assist you if you have a computer to which you can attach your device and do whatever it takes to make a new file with a current timestamp.

Create GPX

So what's the best method for creating the GPX file to be used as a backup? Via Basecamp or something else?

Straight Backup

EVERYONE needs to make a BACKUP of their unit. See
Backing Up Your GPS (Garmin) {G}

Once you have a backup of your unit, you also have a copy of your Favorites/Saved Places, because you have a copy of "Current.gpx". Thus, you do not need to use anything to make a .gpx file of your Favorites/Saved Places.

However, you can use Extra POI Editor (EPE) to edit those Favorites/Saved Places if you ever want to (or need to) restore them to your old unit - or to a new unit, for that matter.
