WAV files not loading

When I try to download a WAV files to my Garmin using POI Loader I get an error message stating "Unable to convert speed camera WAV to the proper format, therefore audio file was not transfered. I am using a Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT. What could be the problem? Does anybody have a solution to this problem?

Tell us about your wav

You say the speed camera wav file gives an error. Does that mean you have other wav files and they do load properly or does it mean your one and only wav file, the speed camera one, doesn't load? Your answer will help us decide if the issue is a single wav file or if the issue occurs for all wav files.

Assuming you have the proper version of sox.exe loaded in the folder containing POI Loader.exe and that your computer doesn't have double extensions, tell us about your wav files. Do they follow the requirements from our faq:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

specifically,

=== MAKING YOUR OWN WAV FILES ===

You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say. There are several voices to pick from.

=== CONVERTING MP3 TO WAV (with an online tool) ===

This web site can convert between MP3 and WAV formats:
http://media.io/
Their default WAV file settings work for Garmin.

=== CONVERTING MP3 TO WAV (on your computer) ===

When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono.
For those who want to convert their favorite MP3’s to wav files, download a audio editing program. Many available by Google search. I listed two:

GoldWave
http://downloads.phpnuke.org/en/download-item-view-x-b-b-a-m...

Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

=== USING GOLDWAVE ===

Using GoldWave for my instructions and Windows XP.

A. Open up GoldWave.
B. Select file then open.
C. Go to the correct folder on the computer with the mp3 and select it.
D. Select file then save as.
1) For the name put in the same as your custom poi file name.
2) Save as type, select Wave(.wav) from the pull down window.
3) Under attributes select, PCM signed 16 bit, mono.

WAV Files

I put the wav files in the same folder that I put my POI downloads which is the POI dowload folder file. Since I haver several WAV file for different poi's should they be individually placed in this same folder or should I have a general folder for all the differant WAV sounds? or does it matter.

You can do as many do here and use folders to help sort your POI files. Personally, I keep things simple--and my suggestion to you right now is keep things simple until they start working before you start tinkering.

For me, I have a single folder I call POI and in it, I place my several csv and gpx POI files, my associated bmp icons, and my audio wav files.

Don't give up--we will get this working for you and rest assured, you're not the first to have this problem. All we ask it that when you succeed, you let us know and tell us what the issue was that was creating a problem for you.

You do have sox.exe (version 14.0.1) and you have it in the folder containing your POI Loader.exe file, not your POI data folder--is this correct?

Download vs load

For future reference, we speak of "downloading" files (.csv, .gpx, .wav. .bmp) to our computers and then "loading" them to our GPS units using POI Loader.

POI Loader will CREATE a .gpi file using sets of .csv/.wav/.bmp or .gpx/.wav/.bmp files stored on our computers. (Note: older unit could use .mp3 files instead of .wav files, but your 760 needs .wav)

I think you know that you must have a specific version of sox.exe (14.0.1) in the folder which contains the Garmin POI Loader. This will be either "[hard drive]:\Program Files\Garmin\POI Loader\\POI Loader.exe" or "[hard drive]:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader\POI Loader.exe" depending on your version of Windows (assuming you are on a PC versus a Mac).

I am assuming that you have a .wav file named "speed camera.wav" (because that is how you listed it) that you got from somewhere but bear in mind that the .csv file you would download from here is named "Speed-Cameras.csv" and there is a .mp3 file named "Speed-Cameras_0.mp3". Assuming that you did download these files and then converted the .mp3 file to a .wav file - then we need to know what the EXACT names of your .csv and .wav files are. In any event they must be the same except for the three character extensions .csv and .wav.

If you indeed have a .wav file called "speed cameras.wav" and downloaded the "Speed-Cameras.csv" file from here, then change the name of the .wav file to "Speed-Cameras.wav" (notice the "-" rather than a blank between the two words and the fact that "Cameras" is plural rather than singular) and try again.

If my assumptions about the spelling of your file are incorrect, tell us the EXACT spelling of your files.

Good Luck

The OP has had success with an older mp3-compatible nuvi using mp3 files, so the issue may well be a missing or misplaced sox.exe or a newer doesn't-play-well-with-POILoader version of sox.exe. We do need confirmation of what sox is being used and where it is, assuming it's running on a Windows PC.

GoldWave

In reference to the quote from the FAQ above, please note that the official GoldWave download page is:

http://www.goldwave.com/release.php

phpnuke.org is not an official GoldWave distributor and is still offering a rather old version of the product.

(I have been a GoldWave user and booster for several years now.)

Good to know

Could you relay this info to charlesd45, the maintainer of the faq with the phpnuke reference? Thanks.

Just did! smile

I will take care of it.

I will take care of it. Shouldn't this discussion still be on http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39078

Wav files not loading

Are you on Windows and if so what version.
I have Windows 8 and the same problem. If I go to the Garmin File on my C drive and run the compatibility test it picks Windows XP and when I run it the wav files download with no problem. Every time I tried to run POI Loader from the Desktop it would not run the wav files. I still don't understand why but since it works run from the POI Loader being run from the Garmin File - I okay with that.

sox downloading

If you downloaded and unzipped sox.exe from the faq here at The Factory, you have the correct 14.0.1. See Step B:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

If you found sox.exe on the web other than here at The Factory, then unless you carefully looked for, found and downloaded 14.0.1, you may well have a newer sox.exe that won't work with POI Loader. There is a newer version 14.1.0 which may fool you into thinking it's the correct 14.0.1 but it isn't.
