Another POI loader problem (sox / error Unable to convert...)

In my C:\Garmin folder I have sox.zip and the latest POILoaderforWinddows_261.exe

When I load my custom pois, I get this error message.
..Unable to convert c:\documents and Settings\compaq_administrator\desktop\GPSstuff/aaMcDonaldsTourGuide.wav to the proper format, therefore this audio file was not transferred.

Before I downloaded the new POI Loader, all my audio and proximity files worked OK
Can someone help?

The new 2.61 moved poiloader

The new 2.61 moved poiloader to program files you have to relocate the sox.exe.In my case for Windows XP.Click My Computer,Local Disk C,program files, click the poiloader folder and put the sox.exe in the folder.

and ...

if you really do have sox.zip, you will need to extract the files when you move it to Program Files.

Also make sure that it is

Also make sure that it is sox 14.0.1 and no other sox file. There was intensive testing here this week by our great members and it was determined that 14.0.1 is the only one that works reliably.

How can I tell the version I have?

sox version

Hey Flaco,

My v14.0.1 file size is (1,712,128 bytes).

- or -

If your using Win 7 click the START bar and then RUN.

In the run box enter "cmd".
In the DOS window
-type "cd C:\program files (x86)\garmin"
-type "sox"
you'll have to scroll back to the line following the command line where you typed sox and it will list its version.

This is the only place I saw it so far.

On My Windows 7 machine, the cd command needed is:

cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

in case the one without POI Loader doesn't work for you.

On the other hand, if sox is downloaded from POI Factory:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

it'll be version 14.0.1 for sure thanks to charlesd45.

use command sox --version

That is where it is on my Windows 7 computer also.

When you get to POI Loader you could issue the command:
sox --version
Note: Do not leave a space between the double dash and version.

That way you get the version number right away without scrolling up.

Maybe just look at your File Manager

My file manager line for the sox.exe that I use ( v 14.0.1) looks like this.

Does your sox.exe carry the 2008 date?

I'm totally lost at this point

I went to Charlies page

Quote:

How do I get voice alerts using wav files for units without mp3 capability?

Before I did anything, I deleted every poiloader and sox file on my XP machine.
Then I downloaded the poiloader & sox. I extracted the sox zip. Then I ran the poiloader. It keeps installing the program. I know that is not right but I can't remember how I did it before.
I still get the errors for the audio files.

POILoader?

If you're saying that POILoader is being installed all the time, it means you're re-running the downloaded file

POILoaderforWindows_2.61.exe

over and over again which you don't want to do.

You just need to run that file once--you can even delete the file after running it once (and probably should to avoid rerunning it in the future). After installing POILoader, what you want to do is go to your computer's Start/Garmin(folder)/POILoader (or maybe it'll just be Start/POILoader) and click the POILoader. This will run (not re-install) POILoader and assuming you have sox in the same directory as POILoader and have another directory with your csv/gpx/bmp/wav files, running POILoader will install the POIs, etc. to your USBed nuvi after once telling POILoader where to look for the POI files on your computer. (You can simplify ther startup by creating a POILoader icon on your desktop to click--just don't click an icon for POILoaderforWindows_2.61.)

I can't remember who it was--maybe even you--who reinstalled POILoader each time it needed to be run, and eventually it failed to work so you really don't want to reinstall too often--maybe due to registry or temp-files issues.

Note: sox.exe needs to be in the directory with POILoader.exe, not the directory containing the POILoaderforWindows_2.61.exe file. On a Windows 7 machine, POILoader.exe will likely reside in the

c:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POILoader

directory--it should be something like this on your XP machine. You may have sox.exe in the installer directory instead of the program directory and this will fail to install audio alerts to the GPS.

Good luck.

PS--when you say you've deleted every poiloader file on your XP machine, I hope you mean you went to Control Panel/AddAndRemovePrograms and uninstalled Garmin POILoader. Simply deleting the files won't remove the POILoader entries in the Windows registry that also need to be taken care of.

PPS--why are my messages always 3x longer than everyone elses?

Just a side note on file location

I wonder why POILoader, MapInstall and MapSource installed themselves in -

C:\program files (x86)\garmin

- folder when I used all of the default settings during the installs. Everyone else seems to of ended up with an additional sub-folder -

C:\program files (x86)\garmin\poiloader.

My BaseCamp, WEbUpdater and LifeTime Updater did creater sub-folders under "C:\program files (x86)\garmin" during their installs.

Oh well, not a big deal, just another hmmm!

It looks like poi loader has its own folder and sox has its own folder. If you open the poi loader folder you will most likely find all the files associated with that program.

If you open the sox folder I suspect you will find the sox.exe

The sox.exe needs to be copied to the poi loader folder.

Of your five folders

Of your five folders, look inside the first (sox-14-0-1) and copy the sox.exe file.

Now go inside the 2nd folder (POI Loader) and paste the sox.exe there. If successful, you can even go back and delete the 1st folder

Leave the 3rd folder (USB_Drivers) as it is.

The 4th and 5th folders contain your downloads and can be deleted since you've already installed both items since they exist as Folder 1 and 2 of your picture.

Three more questions:

When you run POILoader from the Windows Start menu, does POILoader run? (I.e., does a small window open and start with "Welcome to POI Loader." And when you click Next, does a window opens with "Please select where you...") If for some reason you can't run POILoader from the Windows Start menu, go into your 2nd folder and double-click the PoiLoader.exe to start running the program.

Tell us what the error message says and when does the error occur in this process?

Are no POI loaded to the GPS or are some or all loaded but without audio, or ...?

I think that's it!

It worked

Seems like everyone was right. I just couldn't grasp what needed to happen. All is well now.
Thanks a lot.
With my older poi loader, the start icon was in a folder where I keep all my GPS folders. Now I find it in the start menu.
