POI Location

My Garmin 1450 says I only have about 8MB of memory to use for storing my custom POIs. Does this sound right? Accordingly, I've written these POIs to a micro card, but now when I boot up the GPS it always wants to know if I want to transfer them to the main memory. OF course, I have insufficient memory, so must decline-over and over again. How can I get this GPS to realize I have no more room and to give up the repetitive questions?

not with that model

They removed that option with the beginning of the 4 digit models. Those of us with 3 digit models could answer Yes to transfer, then skip and don't ask again. That was good until we updated the file. JOOC, just how big is your POI.GPI file? 8MB is still a good amount of room.

Delete Some Files

Have you also tried to eliminate some unnecessary files to make room for the new POI's.
Two areas you should consider are voice files and vehicles which will free up space.
Regarding voice files, various models use different compression so the savings will vary.
American Jill on my 2460 is about 15MB which has low compression, I believe your 1450 voice files will be far smaller than that since it uses a higher compression engine. But still if you don't use them why keep them and utilize the space for what you do need.

thanks for the comments. My

thanks for the comments. My POI file is 13.8 MB. I did delete most of the voice files (the larger ones) as well as most all the vehicles and if I remember correctly the available memory space didn't change at all. Not sure how that is possible, but I still go looking for more stuff to zap. Anyone know how much memory this device came with?

1450

I just purchased a 1450. I backed up the unit, then deleted all vehicles, help, keyboard and voice, except keeping one of each catagory. I updated the map, then deleted the small JCV file. That left about 50mb free. Then I loaded 30.9mb of custom poi. I created a JCV folder inside a garmin folder on the SD card. Then I installed the large JCV file in that folder on the card.
I sill have 20mb free on the 1450.
That solved all of the memory problems on this unit. I have all of US and Canada for 2013.30.
It still boots up in 16 seconds without the annoying poi prompt.

The 1450 is a 2GB device:

If you have lifetime map updates (or plan to by lifetime or a one-time map update), the good news is that the updater will check your 1400 series model, tell you that you don't have enough space to update the full map internally, and offer to install the full map to a SD card. So prior to starting a map update, buy and install a 4 or 8GB SD card and you'll be good to go. With map file on the SD card, the nuvi will end up with lots of extra room for POIs, etc.:

What Craig said

My 1490 is same as 1450.
I have the 2013.30 map on the SD card on this unit. The boot-up time is 19 seconds. Occasionally it will be slow to redraw when driving in congested area with Map Detail setting at Most.

"keeping one of each

"keeping one of each category" ....what does that mean? Keeping ONE HELP? ONE KEYBOARD? Which one, or does it matter? I can't seem to find the JCV file...what is that?

I find my device has a total of 1.9 GB memory, of which I only have 7.9 MB available after deleting most all the stock files....only TWO vehicles remain. And one voice. The last voice file claimed it was 17.9 MB and after I deleted it the available memory didn't change. What's going on here?

JCV

The jcv file is your Junction View file which I think for the 1450 will be around 40-50 MB. It should be in the jcv folder, possibly in the /garmin/jcv folder with the current map. Can you tell us which version of City Navigator NA NT you currently are using?

If you can't find it, it may be in a hidden system folder, and for Windows users, you need to set your computer's Folder Options to show hidden files, show system files and show extension for known file types. I'm not sure if he 1450 has a .system folder and if the jcv file is there, but if you don't see a jcv file or folder, it may be hidden. Spokey should be able to let us know for sure where the default installation places the jcv file on your nuvi.

Look for the reply from Seapup or the first post by plunder in:

The 1450 has a .system folder and the jcv file will be in the /.system/jcv folder.

WTF??????

This is getting ridiculous. I deleted all the garmin files on my device, then began to re-install each file, one at a time. Now it won't even let me put all the original files back on the device, saying I'm out of space....down to 1.1 MB available with ZERO POI's installed and no text or keyboard files will go back on the device. Seems like I'm chasing a moving target!

Mac user?

Macs don't really delete files until you empty the trash.

1450

stabman, A user on another forum posted this article for deleting unnecessary files for the 1490T but it applies to the 1450 too. I deleted all unnecessary files on my 1490T and with the 2013.30 map and the custom POI files on my SD card I have about 100mb free space on the internal memory.

Your profile shows a Nuvi 1410 but you say you have a 1450. Not sure, but there may be a small decrease in size of memory between the two. Neither will have the 2GB as listed, but less.

If using Windows Explorer, you can check the memory size of the unit by opening Windows Explorer, right click on the Nuvi drive, then select properties. Here you will see your Nuvi's memory size and memory used with memory remaining.

Did you follow CraigW's instructions (4 posts up) by revealing hidden files?

I think by doing this you will get a better picture of what is loaded on the device. You may even have more than 1 JCV file that will eat up a lot of space.

As mentioned earlier, Mac users need to empty trash to really delete files. I don't know about this since I'm a Windows person but if you're using a Mac, you need to heed this.

For Windows PCs, to see the majority of space utilized by the newer nuvis, like the 1450, which have a .system folder (which holds the immense gmapprom.img and the Dxxxxxxx.JCV files), you must first do this with your PC:

Click Start/ControlPanel/FolderOptions/View, then look down the list and make as many of these three changes as are needed so that you meet these requirements:

1) Check "Show hidden files, folders and drives"

2) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

and most important, for nuvi folks looking for files,
3)Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"

Please also tell us, slabman, which City Navigator NA NT map you currently have on your 1450. This will be important if we need to check files sizes, suggest adding the larger jcv file, etc.

You guys are great! Thanks

You guys are great! Thanks so much. My problem was I DID NOT EMPTY THE TRASH!!!! That would explain why the available space kept shrinking as I deleted more stuff. So now I've loaded a large POI file into the Garmin, ditched the micro drive and still have some 400 MB available....WHOOO HOO!

Btw....Do I need all those "text" files after all?

Now I gotta tell you, while this made my day, you guys have taken away my Xmas present to myself....a 3590LMT which I was headed out to buy today. Now I probably can't justify it....just maybe....?

Once again....THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP, GUYS. I really appreciate it!!!!!!!

Glad to hear you are square

and thanks for reporting on your success
