You cannot edit the built in POIs. That is one of the reasons we build our own custom pois. New built in pois come with new maps when they are released. Currently we are on v8. The next version should be out shortly, but it will cost about $75 to update. Map data is provided by Navteq. If you find an error, contact them.

That file is not the built in POI database.

The poi.gpi file is the file that contains the Custom POIs that are loaded. The built in POIs are part of the map information.

As mkhan stated, you can't edit the built in POIs. You also can't edit the poi.gpi file. You can, however, load new Custom POIs that will overwrite and create a new poi.gpi file. You can see what Custom POIs are loaded by looking under Where to? > My Locations > Custom POIs on your GPSr.

any thoughts on when the new

any thoughts on when the new maps will be out?

.

I keep hearing that they will be released Aug 1, which means that the public will be able to get them Sept 1.

You can go to Garmin's website and use the MapViewer to preview the map data for most mapping products.

Did I interpret this

Did I interpret this correctly?

I have noticed things like a Circuit City moved down the street and a Long John Silvers has closed. These will be updated come Aug/Sept but I'm going to have to pay $75 for the update?

Yes, but it also includes all street changes that have taken place since the last map update. Not necessarily that the circuit City that moved will definitely show up on the new maps, sometimes it takes several years, depending upon when Navteq is notified. Navteq is the developer of the maps. You should report any discrepancies to Navteq http://tinyurl.com/y8go3w
Depending upon where you live and the number of streets that have changed recently, you might want to update the maps only once every 2 or three years.

The current version of City Navigator North America is v. Check the Map info on your unit.

Current map version is v 8. I would suspect that you have the current version as I do not believe the c550 was available before version 8.

I can't answer about the Nuvi, but on my c530, I select Tools (the wrench), then select Maps. At the bottomof the Maps screen is a button called Map Info. This is where the map version is located.

.

Look on page 44 of the owner's manual.

Select "Settings", "Map", "Map Info".

This will show the maps that are loaded.

interesting

I've reported several errors to NavTeq. After several months they are still listed as Open.

On a recent request I decided to use the Cartography > Error Report Form on the Garmin web site. Well, from the response I got, it seems that Garmin reviews the form then forwards to Navteq. They also suggested I report the error to Navteq.

The following is some of that email response:

"...When Garmin publishes a product, it uses the latest detail available from vendors at the time it starts putting the product together. We don't digitize the detail, though...any imperfections or omissions in the source detail get included in the final product, along with the positives.

Our primary road detail vendor for North American roads and streets is NavTeq (the points of interest are primarily from Dun & Bradstreet licensed by NavTeq).{Edit; listening to the radio interview, this was a question - where the factory poi's come from}

It is a running database that is kept, and not every piece of data will be the same "age" from it. In most large metro areas of North America, the NavTeq detail is premium and is usually quite good (though about any map of this kind of scale will have some errors). NavTeq drives those roads and field verifies them. NavTeq is commonly regarded as making the best routable North American detail in the business, which is why we use them.

In "other" areas outside these driven metropolitan areas, the detail from NavTeq is usually good, but it is not always quite as good. You may find that roads are more likely to be missing or are slightly off from their true position. You may also find that addresses are not available or the address ranges may be on the opposite side of the street from what they truly are. These roads have not been field verified by NavTeq but have been put together in other ways. But overall the quality of these areas is pretty comparable to the data
from other vendors in this market...overall being the key word. NavTeq is the premium data vendor in this business by most regard.

Please keep in mind that in high growth areas, updates for new subdivisions and new construction may take time. We purchase one update a year from Navteq and if the timing isn't right, the changes may not be in their database yet when they send us our update. I know it can be frustrating but Garmin and our data vendors do everything possible to put out the most accurate, up to date maps possible. In addition to submitting the errors to us you may also want to consider contacting NavTeq directly by filling out their map feedback form..."
