SD vs Internal file

When I downloaded the latest map update I was told the map was too large for my internal memory. Rather than use an SD card, I chose to download the smaller file.
Does anyone know what I may be missing? Am I missing important pieces of the database, or just some geographical areas I may never visit?
thanks

The coverage area is reduced. Mexico and Canada are the first to go if you have them. Otherwise it reduces states furthest from your primary location set by the time zone in your unit.

Yes, your nuvi 265WT with lifetime maps is qualified to receive all of North America but with only 2GB of internal storage, you most likely lost Canada and Alaska or something like that. And given that home is Calgary, that might just happen to be a problem--maybe, though, for Canadians, you received Alaska and Canada but lost Florida. Oh wait, is Florida Canada's southermost province--or is it Arizona?
I suggest getting a nice little 4 or 8GB SD card and re-installing the new map. To reinstall, have your nuvi connected to the computer, then log into myGarmin, tab over to myMaps, and you should have the option to redownload and reinstall the current map.

Do maps loaded to a SD card run slower, is the difference noticeable?
Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...
you won't notice a difference
Do maps loaded to a SD card run slower, is the difference noticeable?
The maps will take longer to load and change, but the difference is the amount of time it takes the electrons to travel those extra fractions of a meter in the circuitry. Considering we are talking about speeds of 300,000 km per second, your brain would never register the difference.

SD or Internal
When I went to d/l the latest maps on my 885, the Garmin system informed me my unit could not accept the entire maps internally and gave me the option to d/l to an SD card OR d/l a smaller portion of the maps.
I would have d/l the smaller portion (lower 48) but the web site also informed me that if I did that, my GPS would not be able to use voice command !
WHAT !?
Anyway... I went ahead and d/l to an SD card. But I have been having more freezes than usual. I especially have problem when the unit switches from Day mode to Night mode at sunset/suunrise.

Have you deleted all unneeded voices, etc. from your 885? After removing all voice, text and help files except the English language ones, I was able to install all of North America internally to my 855 and I still have a whopping 670 MB of free space! I'm not sure of the difference between the 855 and 885 for file sizes and free space, but I expect they're fairly similar since I think the only addition in the 885 over the 855 is Bluetooth. If you want to reinstall the map internally, my suggestion to you is to backup your 885, then delete all the unneeded files from it, and finally redownload and install the map to your 885, now being given all of North America and keeping voice commands, etc. (To redownload, have your 885 connected to your computer, log into myGarmin, tab to myMaps, the select the install again option.)
On a different note, freezeups after a map or firmware update are often cured by doing a hard reset. Have you tried that?
I agree with your surprise and I'm equally surprised that a map update option would remove voice commands.
Your results are very odd and interesting. According to the Garmin faq, the nuvi 8x5 series is not supposed to be offered the automatic map-on-SD option yet you say you were given that option:
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...
Finally, if you haven't done so, you really should consider replacing the default jcv file with the large one--and this will need to be installed on a SD card.
Good luck and please report back.
Still had Canada

I still had Canada without the SD card, but maybe I lost Florida. I didn't take the chance and have now reinstalled the entire map file on an SD card.

As the internal memory gets
As the internal memory gets full, does it automatically switch to the SD card? My device is a nuvi 1350.
Thanks

No.
Using the SD card is not automatic. It is an option you select.

But Will You Need It
I see a lot of anguish here in the forums over not being able to install the entire North American map. I'm sure some folks travel around the country enough to need it, but many don't. I fit in the latter category. Rather than fooling around with an SD card, I simply downloaded the portion of the map I need. If by chance I am headed to Canada one day, I'll deal with it then.
SD
On my 1490T the internal memory is 2gb so I only load the "Lower 48" on each map update. I use a 8gb for the large JCV file and Custom POI files.

Space
I have a Nuvi 1690. When I first got it, I deleted all files that I didn't need. I was able to use all the space for maps and POI's internally until the last map update. When Garmin said I didn't have enough space, I deleted all my POI's, put on the larger map internally and then put all my POI's on my card. Worked great.

I always download PO'sI, including RLC's
to SD card since they are updated regularly. Why keep overwriting files on your garmin every week?
I usually put the maps on the unit since this is 4 times a year.
POIs and memory
I've yet to run up against an internal memory issue, but hear more and more people complain about it - which makes me think my time's coming. I also remove files I don't need from my internal memory and don't have a lot of POIs loaded, red light and speed cameras and triple D - that's it - and those files are very small - even smaller after removing Canadian provinces. What's the best way to handle map updates to minimize what's on the Garmin internal memory?

If you're asking about your nuvi 2595LMT, it has 8GB or more of internal storage:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375
and therefore should have no problem for ages--probably for the effective lifetime of the device--receiving the full North America map update with no need for you do delete anything.
Also, your 25x5 series nuvi is among the models that will be offered a map update to an SD card if the update process determines that your device will receive less than complete map update coverage:
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...
and a 4 or 8 GB SD card is so inexpensive. But I still believe that this issue won't arise for you unless you possibly plan to install and update City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe or some other such process uncommon to most folks.

external card
Does it matter what speed is the external card? Is class 4 enough? or better to go with class 6 or even class 10?
Does anyone have experience with this?
class 4 are really cheep an if it would be enough ...
thx

Class
Class shouldn't make much, if any difference. As I understand it a class 10 card offers faster 'write' speed than a class 6 card but since you will only be 'reading' from the card the class doesn't matter.

My understanding is the class rating shows how fast data can be written to the card, not how fast data can be retrieved. You write map data once (a quarter) but read it every time you use the unit. So being able to transfer data to the card quickly as you would need to do for something like a camera isn't that important. IMHO a Class 4 is plenty sufficient.
