Trip planner and speed alerts

We just took an 800 mile trip (400 each way). I did a trip planner before we left and put it in my Nuvi 2450.

It went in great and all was just fine.

But, something that was never there before happened. At almost every stop light and stop sign and if the road ended at a cross road there was a speed alert alarm. At .3 miles two dings and at .2 miles one ding. I didn't mind this and it did warn me to slow down when there was a light or stop sign to stop at.

I did not do the firmware update before we left but I do have the latest maps. Has anyone else had this happen?

No one

If no one had this speed alert for stop signs and red lights then did I do something when planning my trip in Mapsource?

Speed alerts

The usual cause for unwanted speed alerts happens when using POI Loader to load custom POIs. If one of the POI files has a number in the filename, every POI in the file will have a speed alert based on that number. A speed alert is simply a proximity alert that happens when the speed is exceeded. If you load motel8.csv, there will be an 8 mph speed alert when every Motel 8 is approached. Perhaps there are POIs at those locations at intersections?

Check the filenames of all your POI files for numbers. Is so, rename the files by removing the numbers. Run POI Loader to remove all custom POIs. With up-to-date versions of POI loader, there is the possibility of having multiple .gpi files in the nuvi with different names. Run POI Loader again to load all your custom POIs with the new filenames.

In other threads, posters have said that MapSource does not work reliably with the latest map updates. MapSource is no longer supported by Garmin. BaseCamp is now recommended. Perhaps MapSource caused the speed alerts?

Thanks for the information

".3 mi speed alert ahead" is what the message gives.

The message only alerts at stop signs, cross streets that end, and red lights. Not at left or right turns. There are no pois at the positions and they alert at any speed I am driving.

Look at the 2450 manual

I am not familiar with the nuvi 2450 but in the manual on page 27, "Viewing the Map While Navigating," it says, "Changing the Speed Limit," by touching the speed limit icon and using the up and down arrows.

Perhaps you are driving faster than the nuvi's speed limit is set for. This only happens while navigating.

GPS simulator

mgarledge, can you reproduce these alerts in the GPS simulator?

Normally, Garmin does not have any speed alerts at stop signs or red lights, at least none that I am aware of. Certain Garmin models do have audible speed alerts but they are only in certain locales other than the US.

Yes

I did the simulator and the trips and they were there. It is just like when we go through a school zone. I used trip planner in November and this did not happen.

I will do another small trip and see if it alerts at the end of my road. Will let you know.

Did another one

I had the gps go just down two roads and it still alerts at the end of my road. I am going to delete all the pois and favorites and see what it does.

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

Alerting on Home

The unit was alerting on home. Home did not have any numbers in it. I deleted all my favorites and all my pois and the speed alert was not there for any stop signs or red lights. Some of the red lights and stop signs were at turns...

I used poi loader to load all my pois. But I used MapSource send to device to do the trip planner. It looks like when I did this some how I made alerts for places I didn't even have pois.

Not sure what happened but if I find out I will post it here.

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

Alerting again after loading POIs

Loaded the Pois again and it is alerting again. Must be something in my pois.

Alerts

Curious. Is there any certain POI that you use at these given intersections?

Other than being able to identify what POI is causing the problem up front you may have to use the process of elimination with your POIs.

I am working on it

I am doing the process of elimination. I had home in several routes and the gps renamed them home1 etc. I think this made the speed alert for the one near me.

There were several other alerts but I am deleting anything with numbers in them and so far no alerts.

The thing I can't figure out is there are several places that alerted that did not have a poi near them. Still working on it.
Thanks.

Re loaded

Just reloaded trips from Mapsource.
I have a to and from route and when Mapsource duplicated the route and inverted it it named the pois with a 1 on the end. These now give a speed alert at .3 miles before I get to them...

Guess I will have to go and rename them.

The other thing I noticed even after I deleted all pois on my gps and sd card, went in and deleted some of them on my computer then reloaded the pois with poi loader the ones I deleted are still there as little gray spots with a pink square around them.

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

One more question

I have never used alerts for pois.

When there is a poi alert does it say speed alert or does it announce the poi?
Thanks

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

reloaded a file??

It sounds like at some point in time some of your POIs got reloaded in MapSource and it created a created a 2nd POI with a "1" attached to the POI name.

If they are downloaded files from here you can just re-download. If they are your own custom files then you will need to edit the file(s) if you don't have a backup stashed somewhere.

I hope it is just 1 file affected, good luck.

I make my poi files and keep them in a folder on my computer then download them to the gps.
I may be doing something wrong as when I transfer my routes from Mapsource to my gps (that uses trip planner) it nearly always puts a 1 after the poi name. I use the send to device option on Mapsource.

Is there another way to get the routes into the gps that were created on Mapsource?

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

.

You are confusing two different things.

Sending data from MapSource creates FAVORITES. It does not affect the Custom POIs. MapSource does not create "POIs" when it sends data to the GPS unit.

Favorites do not create alerts.

Note that it is normal behavior for the GPS unit to append the name of the Favorite with the number 1 when you send a Favorite with the same name as one that is already on the GPS unit.

Note that units that use the Trip Planner typically have problems with routes from MapSource.

As much as it is a pain, you might try BaseCamp.

Alternately, you might try saving the Route as a GPX file and copying that GPX file directly to the GPX folder on the GPS unit and then seeing if you can import it on the unit. Note that not all units can do this.

Duplicate POIs

Mapsource just sends a GPX file with routes or POIs to load as Favorites. The next time the GPS is booted it reads them in automatically. I believe it is the GPS that adds the 1 to the POI names when it loads the POIs because it already sees the POI names loaded in its memory.

Try deleting any unnecessary POIs and routes from the GPS. Then connect the GPS to your PC and check the GPX folder on the GPS and the SD card for any GPX files. If there are any copy them to your PC for safe keeping before deleting them from your GPS.

Open Mapsource and transfer all POIs and routes from the GPS to your PC, make your new route using the loaded POIs and adding any new ones necessary for your route. save the route and send just the route back.

I have had duplicate POIs with a 1 added show up before but I don't remember any of them ever causing an alert.

I don't have any model close to the 2450 so I don't know if there are any settings that would allow alerts on Favorites but I have never read about any here.

When using Mapsource

When using MapSource I always save in GPX. I never save in the other options. I make folders on my computer and save all my POI files from Mapsource in these folders.
When I want my POI files to go to my Nuvi I use the POI Loader.
I create my routes on Mapsource and then use Mapsource "send to device" to send my routes to my trip planner. I check waypoints and routes when I sent this to my Nuvi. This creates the Favorites and the routes. If you don't check waypoints when sending your routes the trip planner doesn't work correctly. If you sent the waypoints along with the routes to the Nuvi that uses the tripplanner it works great. I have found that I need to make sure I do not have the same favorite in my unit before I send them or it will put a 1 after the favorite with the same name.

See my post above as to how I get my routes in my unit. It works great that way.
I have had dup. POIs before and one will have a 1 after it and also have never had the problem with alerts.

Everything I do as to my POIs and Routes I use Mapsource and not the unit. Everything is always saved to my computer before I put it in my unit. I have gone back to look at most of my POI and Route files on Mapsouce. I did find that I had the same file in favorites and in my POI files. I am in the process of making sure I only have one POI of each place and no favorite of it. Will see if I have any alerts when I am finished. The poi that was at my first stop sign at the end of my street I have deleted and there is no longer any alert at the stop sign. The POI did not have a number in it and I don't know why it alerted on it.

Hope to find out more as I work with it.
Thanks again for all your help.

Thank you Mgarledge

You explained it very well. I plan trips with Mapsource the way that you do. I had never made the mistake of duplicate favorites though.
..Adding to your post, when I transfer the routes to my 1490, I do not actually import the routes into the memory.
I have just the favorites, like you mention, then I GOTO> each favorite in turn. I find that gives me flexibility when I choose to deviate from the plan. And I deviate many times. This method may not work as well with other models with trip planner.

That sounds like a good idea. The Favorites would be all you need.
This last trip we took a new way to the coast going the back roads to miss I-35 so the route worked better for me, but now that we know what towns we need to go through we could use the favorites and deviate if we wanted.
Thanks for the idea.

Still have speed alerts

Just used my Nuvi 2450. I am still getting speed alerts on poi's. The poi she alerted on was E-Z Mail
no numbers in it. Could it be the - ?

It starts 0.3 miles and a little white note comes up with a ding and says "Speed Alert in .3 mi."

Not sure what is causing this...

is there a chance you wanted a distance alert for this POI and mistakenly added an entry in the speed? The other possibility is the file itself has a structure error. Is it a CSV or GPX?

This is a GPX file. I went to Google map and found the place and did a send to device. I then at one point put all my favorites in mapsource and added the ones I wanted to keep to my POI files and then resent them to my Nuvi by way of POI loader.
Just a regular send, I don't ask for speed or distance, just did what the default is set for.
Thanks for your help.

Nr. in Folders

Yes

vestenfjell wrote:

Just sent two files to Box Car. He is going to look at them. One of the folders is named favorites 12-2012

I thought just the POI can't have numbers. This a sub folder name.

I had other poi's do speed alerts that were in other subfloders this past December. Not sure what is going on.

Folders and sub folders name

Folders and sub folders name with numbers act just like numbers in filename.

Un-known alert

The best way to find if one of your files has a alert in it. Run Poiloader in manual mode and slowly go through each file hitting next to go to next file. You will easily spot any file that has a alert set for it. It will show a proximity alert for it. From that information you can make the needed changes. As stated folders with numbers will cause alerts.

Y'all are correct

Box Car just checked my file and he said all is ok with it.
He said the post that said a number in the folder name must be it.

I will change the folder name and see if that fixes it.

Also I will do the Poiloader in manual mode (hope it is easy to find how to do that) and see how all my files are.

Thanks y'all for all the help. Y'all are such great poi-factory people.....smile

When you get to Browse on

When you get to Browse on Poiloader and select the folder location for My poi’s . Looking below on same screen you will see selection for either express or manual mode.

YEA...

Changing the name of the folder that had numbers in it worked.
I did a sim. of the area where the alert was and it gave me a speed alert.
I changed the name of the sub folder and reloaded with poiloader and did a sim. of the same area and NO speed alert.

Thanks everyone,
