How do I update a POI file I've previously downloaded to my GPS?

A few years ago, I downloaded the Red Light Camera POI file on my Garmin.

If I download the most current Red Light Camera POI file will it override the original file and just add the new info?

Or should I delete the old POI file on my Garmin and start fresh?

Thanks!
Cheryl

Sorry if this question has already been answered. I did a search and didn't seem to find an answer on here.

Yes

Yes, installing the new file using Garmin's POIloader software will overwrite the old file and replace it with the new one.

You can also delete the old file by deleting the the .gpi file in the POI folder on the Nuvi.

Start fresh

There is good reason for starting fresh. You have been a member for a long time and have probably used several versions of POI Loader as they are updated. POI Loader takes your POI files and creates a .gpi file in the nuvi.

Older or newer versions of POI Loader name the .gpi files differently by default. You could have an older (not up-to-date) RLC file in one .gpi file and a newer RLC file in another .gpi file and both are loaded into the nuvi.

There are two ways to remedy this. The simplest is to run POI Loader only "to delete all custom POIs" by choosing that radio button on the first (or one of the first) screens POI Loader displays.

Like t923347 says, the other way is to connect the nuvi to the PC and delete the .gpi files to accomplish the same result. Back up the nuvi first since it is possible to brick it by making a mistake.

Then run POI Loader a second time to load your custom POIs. Only one up-to-date .gpi file will be loaded.

No need to run POILoader twice

You don't necessarily have to run POILoader twice. When you run the loader, if it finds an older version of your files you're given an opportunity to delete it then load the new file all in one step.

POI Loader

I always tell it to remove the old files first, and then load the new ones.

So I run it twice.

No real reason other than I like to make sure and have a clean system when I load the new POI files. The Garmin doesn't care, but I feel better doing it that way. lol
