Can't Install American Jill - Nuvi 50LM

When I try to run the program, the COM/USB portion tells me it can't find the device. I've tried Auto-Detect, the com ports, changed baud rate etc.

I can "see" the GPS from the PC no problem.

What am I missing?

TIA,

dk

What program are you referring to?

To update your nuvi, including voice updates, we suggest you use WebUpdater:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Note that the myDashboard portion of myGarmin will also do updates:

https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm

In either case, have your nuvi connected to your computer via a USB cable. Don't go through a USB hub but rather plug the cable directly into a computer USB port, and if given the option of front vs. back USB computer ports, choose a back one.

Once connected, start WebUpdater and you'll be given the option to update firmware on your nuvi, then other updates including voices.

It appears that you're using some other program. I'd like to know what you're using out of my own curiosity, but the solution for updating a nuvi 50LM is to use WebUpdater.

Wow, it's been years since I've seen COM ports and baud rates mentioned. You're not possibly using an ancient computer without USB ports and therefore trying to use some COM/USB converter cable and driver, are you? If so, please provide a link to what you're using.

Run what program?

CraigW is right. What program are you running? Also please provide more details about the computer's operating system that you are using.

Since I"m still here

I'll answer this now and try your suggestions after breakfast.

I was surprised to see the "COM Port & Baud Rate" as well.
This is a Dell 9100 Dimension, not the newest or greatest, but it works for checking emails, and quick web stuff, downloading etc.

I just assumed the program was meant to be available to older PC's.
I tried both the front and back USB ports, no hubs involved.

I have 4 PC's, if all else fails I'll try a different one.

Thanks

What program?

We're still confused when you mention running "the program."

One more question for you or other nuvi 50 folks: Does the nuvi 50 come out-of-the-box with Jill? Or does the 50 use Samantha? I'm pretty sure that it's still true that nuvis have one of two voice engines and the lower end voice engine can use Samantha while the higher end models can use Jill.

If a nuvi has the low end voice engine, Jill can not be installed or used.

Jill Not Available on 50LM

@05Glide: you mentioned installing the Samantha voice on your 50LM in a previous post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36846

Units that have the Samantha voice cannot use the Jill voice. Jill requires different speech hardware.

I highly doubt you can install American Jill since it uses a completely different voice compression on the Nuvi 50. American Jill is about 15.5 MB and I believe Samanth is less than 3MB. I once tried putting Jill on a friends 265W and it wouldn't work.

When you use Webupdater it will show you all the voices that are compatible with your Nuvi 50, Jill will not be one of them.

The Program

American Jill is available as an exe, meaning an installer program. He downloaded it from Garmin's page here.

Ah, thank you.

It's interesting that Garmin doesn't include a list of compatible GPS models or some other warning on the page.

Never knew an .exe voice file existed

Amazing, Garmin provides a link for a file that's 4 1/2 years old, yet you can't download a firmware from the previous version. That Jill link is for Ver 1.90, it's now at 3.0 after numerous updates.

Even if 05 Glide were able to install the Jill TTS voice it would only take up 13.56MB of space and it wouldn't work.

Bingo

Thanks for answering the question. I assumed that was how everyone got Jill.

Edit: LOL that doesn't sound right, but IMO too funny to change.

Bring back Jill!

This is crazy. I really don't like Samantha's accent, but she seems to be the only choice for American English street names. I'd be happy to pay a fee to get Jill back.

Some thoughts

Hmm, the humorous answer is to sell the nuvi 50 and buy a nuvi model that uses Jill and consider the purchase price "your fee." wink I think the nuvi 30/40/50 were part of last year's "Essential" series and you needed to go to one of the two higher series to get Jill.

Here are two thoughts that may make this a reasonable option:

1) If you really have a nuvi 50 as opposed to a 50LM, you don't have lifetime maps. Selling your 50 and buying a nuvi with Jill that offers lifetime maps may not be that much more expensive adding lifetime maps to your 50 assuming that you plan a map update at some date in the future.

2) The nuvi 50 was sold in two submodels: one with only the Lower 48 State and the other with the USA and Canada. If you have the Lower 48 version, even buying lifetime maps now for it would still not give you Canada, Alaska or Hawaii. If you have the Lower 48 version and ever think of a trip to Canada/AK, your 50 won't be of any use north of the southern US/Canada border which again offers a reason to sell the 50 and buy another nuvi model. Just make sure the new model offers Jill. It sounds like you had a nuvi before you bought your 50 and the old one had Jill. You could go back to using it. (Another weak attempt at humor on my part. Sorry.) Does the 50 have any other English language "Speaks Street Names" offerings like British or Australian English? That would be another option.

Should you decide to get rid of your 50, be sure to unregister it so the buyer can register it with Garmin under their name.

By the way, welcome to The Factory. (Now I'm serious and not being humorous.) You may want to have your user name something other than an email address to avoid future spam. If you want to switch, you'll need to use the contact form found here:

to get your user name changed.
