new & interesting places for your GPS

Nuvi 50LM Question

I got a good price on a new in the box 50LM.
I've had very basic GPS before, but I'm a newbie to it's functions compared to the 2 previous units.

The only POI's I have uploaded were golf courses and Harley Davidson dealers.
Today the unit sounded and a "camera" banner came up on the screen about 200 ft before this area's well known red light/speed camera.
While I was thrilled (I was only going 25) I have no idea how that happened.
Any info. will be appreciated.

Regards,

The downloadable Owners Manual, page 24 (and 20) might offer some help:

Of course, another answer might be that you've installed The Factory's speed and redlight POI files wink

http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/us/red-light-cameras

These are free once you have your Windmill or you can pay to get them ahead of time.

Welcome to The Factory and your first post!

Cyclops Safety Cameras

I believe all the new units come with a trial subscription of Garmin Cyclops safety cameras, that is why you got the banner notification. This trial version is good for 30 days and cannot be updated with buying a subscription. However, the version that is on your computer will remain unless you delete the files.

The Cyclops safety cameras DO NOT allow you to add your own audio alerts, with POI Factory Redlight & Speed Cameras you are able to accomplish this.

Anybody can download a free trial to Garmins Safety Cameras, here is a link for US/Canada.
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=69781&pvID=70472

I haven't bothered to download since I prefer the POI Factory files.

If you download the factory files I suggest you delete the Cyclops files since there will be duplicates and receive duplicate notifications of an upcoming Redlight\Speed camera.

Not sure of the exact file names to delete for Cyclops cameras, but I believe they will contain wording of "Cyclops Trial, with a .gpi extension.

Cyclops sample file

USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi

It will be in the Garmin GPX folder. Be sure to make a backup copy of it. Mine disappeared after awhile.

Thanks for the refresher course from another thread and providing the proper name. I'm losing more brain cells every day.

BACKUP

@05Glide - Welcome to the site

We all strongly suggest that you make a backup of your entire nuvi. Doing so may save you from grief in the future.

If you do not know how to do this, please look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

Follow Up

Just to experiment I downloaded and installed the free 30 day Cyclops file.
It created 3 files
safety_camera_us_canada.gma (Garmin Map Activation)
safety_camera_us_canada.gpi (POI File)
safety_camera_us_canada.unl (Unlock File)

It placed the three files in the POI folder NOT the GPX folder. Perhaps with new units the files are placed in the GPX folder and the free download puts them in the POI folder.

Actually I can put a POI file in any folder on my 2460LMT and the Nuvi will recognize it, the same holds true for an SD card.

I find the Cyclops file far inferior to the POI Factory's POI. The Cyclops camera file does not appear in the Extra's folder so you can't see where any nearby cameras are located as you can with our POI Factory files. I've deleted the 3 files, don't even care to back them up, I'll stick with the POI Factory files.

New NUVI40

I just got my NUVI40 this past Christmas. The sample file was placed into the GPX folder along with the current.gpi file. Custom POI's loaded with POILoader are put into the POI folder.

I figure his NUVI50 would do the same.

Welcome to the group. You will never want to leave. I don't even bother with Garmin any more, except to run WebUpdater and get free stuff from the Garage. There is a better place for other vehicles. GO here: http://www.vehiclesforgarminnuvi.com/

As for voices, most of us like Karen. Jack is a close second. I don't think you get Jill.

Garmin "Offer"

I've been thru that intersection several times since getting the 50LM, last night was the 1st time it sounded...

NOW this morning, after the GPS booted-up, I got a message to the effect of Garmin offering safety camera info, d/l'ing from their website, so I assume you are correct.

And to the other comment about "never leaving". I've been lurking here since October, 2011 when I first got a 1445T, that didn't work out as I hoped and when the 50LM was offered, I took it. So I'll be around.

Thanks Everyone

Great GPS

I also have a 50LM and I think its a great GPS for the price. It does everything that I want it to do. And thanks to this site the Red Light file is great.

Back-Ups

"Strongly"? Ha-ha, well I backed it up before I even started poking around or loaded the POI's.

One time I rooted a smartphone, I backed it up and thought I "saved" the files on the C: drive, then they weren't there Uh-Oh
I got lucky, they were on the desktop.

I do thank you though.

Just curious...

muell9k, I'm just wondering specifically what do you prefer about POI Factory's camera files to the Garmin Cyclops? I've used an older (probably 2-3 years ago) version of the POI red light file on my nuvi 250 and noticed a couple issues that don't seem to occur with Cyclops:
1) For intersections where street A has cameras and street B doesn't, I would get warnings travelling on Street B
2) For intersections where street A has a camera for westbound traffic but not eastbound, I would get a warning if I were going east.
3) For a freeway offramp where the freeway continues on an overpass over the intersection with the cameras, I would get warnings when I was on the freeway.

I'm wondering if these would be issues with the GPS device itself? Or with the POI file?
