Nuvi 50LM Issues

Well I used the GPS for an out-of-town trip for the first time this past week.... arrgghhh
The unit was updated (firmware & maps) after being unpacked.

Before making a decision on it's fate, I thought maybe the POI collective would have suggestions.

The most common problem was it giving voice directions too late, i.e. telling us to turn after we passed the street. This happened 75% of the time.
The screen information was "OK", but it didn't seem usable on city surface streets. Two streets, 200 feet apart and it didn't distinguish between them, showing and telling us to turn on the wrong street.
I changed the resolution, drove slow etc. After awhile, I would automatically pass a street until I saw a street sign and then go back.
At one point, I knew where I was going, but followed it's directions. The unit took us a half mile past the house.
On several occasions, it had the POI on the wrong side of a divided street. Not fun in Orlando, in heavy traffic around International Drive. smile

I'm hoping I have something set-up wrong, I'm expecting too much or this is a bad unit, and my experience is NOT indicative of the 50LM.

Thanks,

Map Info

Can you go to your Map Info page and tell us what maps are listed and which maps are checked?

I'm not sure how to access this on a nuvi 50, but for older models, you'd tap Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo.

On the

On the newer models, it's probably Tools - Settings - MyMaps.

Also, if the firmware/software updates were done, I would also suggest a hard reset of the Nuvi. Many of the problems encountered on your 50 sound like things that a reset can clear.

More Info.

A friend from work called me asking how it went with the 50LM.
His folks borrowed his brother's Nuvi (he believes it's an older unit, 655 maybe), they were also in Central Florida last week.
They were having the problems I mentioned.

I asked him to get the various version numbers for comparison.
I'll let you know.

Mine 50LM #'s
Basemap NR 5.01

SW
GPS 3.40
Test 2.40
Kybd 2.30
Audio 2,0 Michelle

Thanks

Your first post suggested that maybe the nuvi wasn't able to create routes to go to any specific locations and that's why I asked about maps since it sounded like you may only be seeing your nuvi's Basemap.

Your reply above makes this more likely. You say you see BaseMap but there's no indication that you have City Navigator North America NT (or any smaller subset of City Nav.) on the device. The nuvi would have come with City Navigator and you say you did a map update to a newer version of it (the current version is 2013.10) so it may be that your City Navigator or a later update is corrupt or misnamed.

Have you done anything unusual during or since your map update? Did the map update go OK and did you select certain regions to install? Did you install the map to the nuvi or to a SD card? Have you possibly deleted or renamed any nuvi files when it was connected to a computer?

But first off, try t92's suggestion and do a hard reset of the nuvi and see if things change for you.

On my '40, it is System -> Map -> Info

I have that problem before and my problem was data corrupted but

after I did the map update again and everything was fine. I didn't have that model but you might try to do the map update again. My 2 cents.

City Navigator??

I looked all through the unit, I did not find City Nav anywhere, the unit is currently reinstalling "Lower 49 States" 2013.10.

I looked thru the User's Manual pdf, (even searched it) and didn't see anything about City Nav.
Where is it supposed to be?

I did do a back-up prior to the updates, if it comes down to that.
FYI, I am new to this so I have no idea if City Nav was ever there to begin with.

TIA

Lower 49 States 2013.10 is the portion of City Navigator North America NT that's now being installed to your nuvi. The fact that you didn't report Lower 49 States 2013.10 but only Basemap NR 5.01 at first suggests that dtran1's comment may be correct. Once you've finished reinstalling the Lower 49 states, check and see if it appears now on you list of maps available (and that it's checked) and then see if the nuvi now works as it should. Good luck.

This is the way my NUVI40 works.

FYI

I decided to look around at Garmin "BaseCamp" this evening. It showed the Nuvi, and "All Data" and "Memory Card" sub folders. Under the memory card was something I didn't pay much attention to GPMAMM or something similar to that.
I got a banner that there were "Updates are available".
I did the updates and the last folder is now "City Navigator North America".

I'll be back in Florida in 6 weeks so, we'll try it again.

What a Difference...

I put the 50LM on the motorcycle are headed-out 1st thing this morning (into out-of-town areas I am NOT familiar with), it worked great. I went into Ohio Amish country where things slow down and you have to avoid horse gifts and sit in slow traffic often.

I made unanticipated turns and it "recalculated" fine.
I installed Samantha and the street names were announced.
One thing I noticed was it seems to do a much better job of estimating arrival time and adjusting it as necessary.

And thanks to all for the help and advice.

YAY

Isn't it a great feeling when you finally get everything to work and can tour?

lol @ "everything working".
My career is, being a troubleshooter, called in to resolve technical problems when all else fails.
There was indeed something special about the way the unit functioned during the impromptu and seat-of the-pants trip yesterday. While I didn't exactly trust it right away, by the end of the 300 mile trip, I found myself just following it's directions.
Near the end, I was in an area I was familiar with and knew of a great short-cut, when the Nuvi gave me directions using the short-cut, I was satisfied.
